Sylvan Esso have issued a new EP in which they perform songs from their latest record, No Rules Sandy, Live at Electric Lady, and cover a song by Low.
Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn were joined by several accomplished musicians for their Electric Lady session, including Jenn Wasner, Tj Maiani, Joe Westerlund, and Mason Stoops. What’s more, the EP features strings by the Attaca Quartet, arranged by Gabriel Kahane.
In addition to five renditions of cuts from No Rules Sandy, Live at Electric Lady features a cover of Low’s “Will the Night,” recorded as a tribute to late drummer Mimi Parker.
“Both Amelia and I are huge fans of Low and were so sad to hear about Mimi passing,” Sanborn explained in a statement. “I can still remember hearing The Curtain Hits the Cast for the first time as a teenager and being immediately struck by ‘Anon’ — they...

Death Cab for Cutie paid tribute to Mimi Parker, who died in November, with a cover of Low’s “The Plan.” The track was recorded after news of Parker’s death and was accompanied by a statement from Death Cab for Cutie, who said the song was one of their favorites.
“We were incredibly saddened by Mimi Parker’s passing this past November and we believe the best way to remember the musicians we lose is to play their songs,” wrote the band. “‘The Plan’ is presented here as a tribute to Mimi.

Low’s Mimi Parker has been celebrated and remembered through the embrace of music by fellow artists in the weeks since she died at 55 following a battle with ovarian cancer. Fans of Low are continuing to mourn Mimi Parker, who died Saturday after battling ovarian cancer. A day after her death, Robert Plant honored Parker by performing a cover of one of the duo’s songs.
“We’ve been drawn to the music of the great duo Low from Duluth, Minnesota, and sadly tonight, we know that unfortunately we’ve lost one of those two people,” Plant said during a show in Glasgow. “So we give our songs tonight to Mimi and Alan [Sparhawk].”

Mimi Parker, best known as the drummer and vocalist for the slowcore band Low, died Saturday from ovarian cancer. She was 55 and her death was confirmed on the band’s official Twitter page.
“Friends, it’s hard to put the universe into language and into a short message, but she passed away last night, surrounded by family and love, including yours,” read the post. “Keep her name close and sacred. Share this moment with someone who needs you. Love is indeed the most important thing.”
Parker and husband Alan Sparhawk formed Low in 1993, supervising a rotating cast of musicians. Their debut record “I Could Live in Hope” arrived in 1994, and the band remained indie before moving to Sub Pop in 2004.
Their last record was “Hey What” in 2021, their first as a duo.
Parker talked openly about her cancer treatments in the press. The group planned a 2023 tour, but canceled remaining...

Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker, the married couple behind Low, have canceled another slate of upcoming concerts to focus on Parker’s battle with ovarian cancer.
“We were hoping she would be healthy enough to do the UK/Europe tour we had planned in November, but it is clear that we should stay home and continue with treatment and care as she is still struggling with ovarian cancer,” Sparhawk wrote to fans Friday. “There have been difficult days but your love has sustained us and will continue to lift us through this time.

“Disappearing” is the sound of anticipating, hoping, and wanting perpetually. There is no resolution in the song, no broad smile and a hardy “That’s all folks.” It’s simply three-and-a-half minutes of throbbing, unrequited yearning, Low at their very best, and it is beautiful.
For nearly three decades, Low’s Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker, a married couple from Duluth, Minnesota, have specialized in heartrendingly austere meditations on the human condition. In Low’s world, the less said, the better, and their instincts for minimalism could make Marie Kondo...

Filmmaker Adam Barnick dropped us a line pointing us to a new music video he has just completed for the band Rivulets that without question wears its classic horror influences on its sleeve. Check it out for some spooky acoustic magic.
For more from the Rivulets, you can dig on some ear candy below the video for their track "How, Who."
About the Band
"Who? Singer-songwriter Nathan Amundson, joined by members of Low, Magnetic Fields, and Puritan. Sounds like? Dark, sparse folk music played on acoustic guitar and an assortment of other instruments (ukulele, xylophone, toy piano and more). How is it? Quietly effective and moving. The subtleties may be lost on first listen, but close examination will be rewarded handsomely." - Alternative Press, 2002

Imperfecta is available on iTunes, Amazon, or through the band’s website, and features vocals from Low’s Mimi Parker on at least one track. The Murder Of Crows will be performing songs off the Ep live via webcast Monday, Sept. 24. The show will take place at the Sacred ...

Low can’t decide whether to stay in its comfort zone or sneak out of it on C’mon. Not as stylistically risky as 2007’s Drums And Guns, C’mon goes through the paces of Low’s familiar sound on songs like “Especially Me,” which waltzes along on Mimi Parker’s characteristically anxious vocal, and “$20,” a pretty ballad that feels like a lost memory made concrete by Parker and Alan Sparhawk’s spare harmonies. Some of the more conventional, genial numbers (“Try To Sleep,” “Done,” “You See Everything”) don’t build to the climaxes of old; rather, they ...
