How do Hollywood creators forge massive universes for their characters? For Ronald D. Moore, executive producer of “For All Mankind” and “Outlander,” it all began with the question: What if the Russians landed on the moon first? From this starting point, “For All Mankind” was born. Moore and his team explored their alternate timeline, weaving cultural, societal, and political shifts with historical events, crafting a rich universe for the Apple+ TV series.
Diving deeper into the intricacies of world-building for Variety’s Sony FYC Showcase, Moore was joined on the “Building a Television Universe” panel by “For All Mankind” co-showrunners and exec producers Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, as well as Maril Davis, who serves as an exec producer on both “For All Mankind” and “Outlander.” Also on the panel: “Justified: City Primeval” co-showrunners and exec producers Michael Dinner and Dave Andron, as well as Sony Pictures TV drama development exec VP Andrew Plotkin.

Exclusive: Spotting new IP whose series adaptation would produce the next big TV hit has become vital for the business as the competition for eyeballs in the expanding TV universe continues to intensify. With that in mind, Sony Pictures Television has signed a first-look deal with Matt DeVoe, co-founder and Cco of CovrPrice, a comic book collectibles platform, for him to identify new trends in IP for series development.
In scouting new IP for Spt, DeVoe will use his insight from CovrPrice, a collectibles platform that has become a key website for comic book trends and statistics.
“With Matt’s extensive knowledge and relationships in the comic book space, it made formalizing a relationship with him a no-brainer,” said Andrew Plotkin, SVP of development at Sony Pictures Television. “The constant search for great IP is never-ending and we are confident that Matt/CovrPrice will successfully bring top quality content to Sony.

If not for a Ubisoft logo revealing the game company as a producer of Werewolves Within, I would be wondering what the point of buying licensing rights was since this adaptation isn’t even set in medieval times. I’m not sure there’s more that sets it apart from other variations on Mafia (the deduction party game created in 1986 by Dimitry Davidoff before getting a fresh spin as Werewolf by Andrew Plotkin in 1997 and more recently appropriated into the online sensation Among Us) since I’ve never played the VR title, but it appears anyone could just write a murder mystery populated by over-the-top paranoids without worrying about already existing IP. I guess if you already own that IP anyway, though, why not utilize it for cross-media synergy?

With the incredible success of books being transferred into TV shows lately (Walking Dead, Game of Thrones), it's no surprise that TV studios are anxious to pick up properties to popular books to turn into series of their own. The latest acquisition is Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicles, which is hands down one of the greatest fantasy books put to paper. Come inside for all the (scant) details.
Excited doesn't begin to describe how I feel right now. The Kingkiller Chronicles (The Name of the Wind, Wise Man's Fear, with a third on the way) are among the best books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. They're written incredibly well, set in a world steeped with deep history, powerful characters, and one of the most engaging storylines out there. While they are relatively new (the first book was published in 2007), they've become almost instant classics with fans all over the world.

Exclusive: James Ellroy‘s 1990s novel L.A. Confidential was turned into an acclaimed feature starring Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger and produced by Regency. Now Ellroy and New Regency are shopping an L.A. Confidential sequel targeted for the small screen. I’ve learned that Ellroy wrote the project on spec as a TV drama series, which is being pitched to broadcast and cable networks as well as emerging distribution platforms, with multiple outlets interested. I hear the project is eyeing a straight-to-series commitment. The sequel continues the themes and stories from L.A. Confidential, a murder mystery which examined the intersection of organized crime, police corruption, celebrity and tabloid journalism in 1950s Los Angeles. The 1997 film, co-written and directed by Curtis Hanson, earned nine Oscar nominations, winning two awards, for best screenplay and best supporting actress (Basinger). The L.A. Israeli TV formats are already white-hot as source material for American series. Now Israeli books are looking to follow in their footsteps. In one of its first major moves in television since officially re-entering the space in June with the hire of Andrew Plotkin as Evp Television, New Regency Prods. has optioned the rights to awarded Israeli author Yoram Kanuik‘s novel Kesem Al Yam Kineret to develop a TV series based on it. Considered Kanuik’s most extreme work, Kesem Al Yam Kineret was published in 1994 and is described by critics as “the closest to Tarantino an Israeli creation has ever gotten.” The novel details the story of a young woman who wakes up one morning and sets out on a journey of ruthless adventure, intent upon living life according to her own terms. New Regency plans to adapt the book’s dark storytelling into a single-camera, half-hour satirical black comedy.
