Exclusive: Netflix has landed the Sundance Film Festival buzz title documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story. The film premiered January 18 at The Ray Theatre.
The film focuses on the boundary-pushing couple Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus from Moscow, and a desperate climb to save their relationship. Directed by Jeff Zimbalist and co-directed by Maria Bukhonina, the film is reminiscent of pics like the Robert Zemeckis-The Walk and the Jimmy Chin/Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi-directed Free Solo, in that you can feel the dizzying heights and the risks just watching.
It took the filmmakers seven years to chronicle it all, as the climbers scaled some of the some of the world’s highest skyscrapers and sharing intimate photos with their millions of followers on social media. The couple’s relationship was in danger of a freefall when their goals began to differ, as they continued to escape law enforcement to dangle off the skyscrapers,...

We learn early in Framing John DeLorean that many films about the famed car maker have died on the vine in pre-production, yet Don Argot and Sheena Joyce try–with the help of Alec Baldwin, Morena Baccarin, Josh Charles, and make-up experts–to capture a guy that embodied the go-go 80s. The film is mildly successful at capturing the cult of personality from multiple sources including his son and daughter, his employees both in the U.S. and Ireland, TV appearances, and the surveillance video of an FBI sting that catapulted the playboy family man into infamy. The story is framed with reflective recreations with Baldwin and Baccarin playing, respectively, DeLorean and his model wife (25 years his junior) Cristina Ferrare.

Exclusive: Xyz Films has come aboard as an executive producer and co-financier with Grade 5 Films on You Don’t Nomi, the Jeffrey McHale documentary about the Showgirls movie phenomenon that will have its world premiere in the Midnight section of the Tribeca Film Festival next month. The move, which ramps up Xyz’s documentary initiative, will see the company rep global rights on the pic, one of three Xyz docs (and six films overall) in the fest’s lineup.
McHale’s pic centers on the odd arc of Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 Nc-17 look at Vegas dancers, at the time met with near-unanimous derision by critics and audiences. But the film has inspired an ever-growing fan community and debate over its quality, artistic intent and messages about sex and gender. The docu explores Showgirls‘ legacy and broader implications. Alec Baldwin, Morena Baccarin, Josh Charles star in the brand new trailer for Framing John Delorean.
It was announced earlier this week that the film would have it premiere at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival taking place April 24 – May 5. From Sundance Selects, Framing John Delorean opens in theaters and VOD June 7th.
Few left their mark on the automotive industry quite like John Z. DeLorean (1925-2005). As an engineer and executive at General Motors, beginning in the 1950s, he was at the helm of the industry’s successes of the era, including classic Pontiac and Chevrolet car models. Ascending to become the youngest division head in the Gm history, DeLorean broke away in 1973 to launch his own company. His signature stainless-steel DeLorean sports car was a notorious flop, though the model would later achieve pop culture infamy as the time-machine in Back to the Future.

The title Framing John DeLorean can be taken at least two ways – framing as in setting someone up for a fall, and framing as in putting in context. This new trailer for the film, making its world premiere at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival, illustrates how directors Don Argott & Sheena M. Joyce intend to accomplish the latter.
Combining archival footage with a more traditional biopic approach featuring Alec Baldwin sporting massive, jet-black eyebrows and a mop of gray hair, Framing John DeLorean is the first feature film about a man whose name dominated headlines in the 1980s. Here’s how Sundance Selects describes it: “For the first time, Framing John DeLorean recounts the extraordinary life and legend of the controversial automaker, tracing his meteoric rise through the ranks of General Motors, his obsessive quest to build a sports car that would conquer the world, and his shocking fall from grace on charges of cocaine trafficking.

In the new film “Framing John DeLorean,” Alec Baldwin plays the beleaguered car manufacturer who invented the “Back to the Future” car and gambled everything in pursuit of the American dream.

The former Aldamisa Entertainment executive will attend Cannes with his new colleagues at the Los Angeles-based production and sales company.
Min’s hire as head of international sales follows the recent move within Xyz Films of former director of sales Mette-Marie Katz to oversee feature and TV development, and the hiring of Tamir Ardon as director of international distribution.
Min, a Screen International Future Leader 2012, most recently served as evp, film and TV for Aldamisa Entertainment, where he worked on Chef and Machete Kills. Prior to that he was vp of international sales and distribution for Seven Arts Pictures.
Company partner Nate Bolotin will continue to oversee sales strategy and remain directly responsible for certain key territories and buyers.
“We’re thrilled to have Eric on board,” said Xyz. “In addition to being a great cultural fit at Xyz, his knowledge of the international distribution landscape will greatly contribute to our expanding sales and distribution mandate.”

The race to make a movie based on the life of John DeLorean has been a slog, not a sprint. During a span of nearly three decades, there have been books, TV movies, documentaries and a raft of failed feature projects and unproduced screenplays left by the side of the road.
Now producers Steve Lee Jones and David Permut think they have the vehicle that can reach the finish line, one fueled by a screenplay from an Emmy winner, the unearthing of 27-year-old FBI surveillance tapes, consulting agreements with DeLorean's brother Charles and his former lawyer and, perhaps most importantly, the only official involvement of his estate and its executor, DeLorean's fourth and final wife.
For years, the estate had spurned numerous overtures until Jones came calling. He was given an exclusive option in September 2009, according to attorney William Courtney, who represents the estate and executor Sally DeLorean.

The DeLorean sweepstakes just gained another entrant.
Nine/8 Entertainment, Evolution Entertainment and CAA agent-turned-producer Michael Menchel are moving forward with the development of a feature about the life of carmaker John DeLorean. Thomas Fenton, who is repped by Apa and Evolution, wrote the screenplay.
Andrew Trapani and Brian Gilbert of Nine/8 are producing along with Andrew Wilson and Stephen Gates of Evolution. Menchel will serve as an executive producer on behalf of his Relevant Entertainment shingle.
DeLorean's only daughter, Kathryn, is partnering with the producers on the film.
"Other producers have asked me to back their projects on behalf of the DeLorean estate," Kathryn DeLorean said. "We felt this was the team to tell the right story the right way. This is the definitive John DeLorean movie. We wanted to ensure my father's story was handled properly; the headlines do not begin to tell the tale."
