You could tell that the Season 21 premiere of The Voice was going to show you a good time from the start, when returning coaches Blake Shelton, John Legend and Kelly Clarkson teamed up with first-timer Ariana Grande to turn “Hold On, I’m Coming” and “Respect” into the most rollicking mashup of songs since Olivia Newton-John and The Tubes went “Dancin’” in Xanadu. From there, we were treated to some by and large extremely good Blind Auditions and discovered not only what kind of panelist the new kid on the block would be (technical, technical, technical) but also what her...

Simply Red is the wild card on this year’s Obama summer playlist. You expect the former president’s curated playlists to be loaded with impeccably hip picks, from all over the worlds of pop, soul, jazz, rock & roll, and his 2021 Summer Playlist is no exception. He’s got vintage classics like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, he’s got cool kids like Jazmine Sullivan and Migos and Wye Oak. Prestige grooves, all the way. But then right there near the top, sticking out like a sore thumb, exactly one...

Sex Education is back exploring the many dalliances of Moordale High, including Otis’ own. Unfortunately for ‘shippers out there, we may be quite a ways from actualizing “Maevis,” so let’s lean into the will-they-won’t-they trope, if we must, and kick off Season 2 with a proper recap.
We could start praising the killer rendition of Divinyls’ “I Touch Myself” that leads the episode or dive into Otis’s newfound, uhh, hobby, but I guess we’d wind up in the same place either way. Our young protagonist is getting a lot of hands-on experience, which should assist his chosen...

10. Waterworld
Directed by: Kevin Reynolds
It could be the flop of all flops. At the time, “Waterworld” was the most expensive film ever made. Starring Kevin Costner, “Waterworld” is a science-fiction/fantasy film taking place roughly 500 years after the polar ice caps melted in the beginning of the 21st century, effectively covering the entire world with water. Dirt has become a commodity and an unknown traveler named “the Mariner” (Costner) is trying to find anywhere to trade his stash. The catch: he’s a mutant, with gills, allowing him to breathe underwater. He is joined by a woman named Helen (Jeannie Tripplehorn) and child named Enola (Tina Majorino) with an elaborate map tattooed on her back. They sail the world and encounter various groups of survivors. They are pursued by a group of evil forces, led by an eye-patched man called “the Deacon” (Dennis Hopper). The special effects are actually pretty impressive,...

A couple days ago someone said something to me like, "Nobody makes music videos anymore," after I told them David Fincher directed Jermaine Stewart's "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off" among many others. I corrected them saying not only are music videos still being made directors such as David Lynch and Paul Thomas Anderson are directing them -- as well as Fincher who did Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie". I mention this because directly below are the music videos for Nine Inch Nails' "Came Back Haunted" directed by Lynch and Fiona Apple's "Hot Knife" directed by Anderson. Give 'em a watch and see what you think.

As far as I can remember, So You Think You Can Dance is the only reality competition series with an audition-thru-finals format where every episode is equally compelling. I can't say that about American Idol and its unbearable auditions or The Voice and its paltry battle rounds. The talent on display in Sytycd is so beautiful, primed, and undeniable that even the relatively nutty auditions come off wonderfully. And did I mention the thorough, fabulous critiques from the judges' panel? What about the ineffable charms of host Cat Deeley? And my favorite: the genius of the voting format. It's not a total populist freakshow like Idol -- America sends three contestants into a sudden death round and the judges decide who within that trio must go home. It's all so correct. So fun and energized and professional.
And with that, we dive right into last night's premiere, which featured a typical melange of kooky talents,...

The filmed works of David Fincher aren't limited to the cinema. In fact, Fincher has made more music videos and commercials than he has movies and today I've decided to highlight a selection of Fincher's music videos from those that will have you nodding your head saying, "Yup, that looks like something Fincher would have directed," and others that will have you saying, "What? Really? The guy that made Zodiac, Seven and Fight Club made that?" I did my best to find a few quotes for some of the videos, a few facts on others and I can also suggest you look for the likes of Djimon Hounsou in Madonna's "Express Yourself" and Paula Abdul's "Straight Up", Christopher Walken in Madonna's "Bad Girl" and you can also find supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford in the video for George Michael's "Freedom!

The nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards were announced this morning, and I did something I rarely do: Watch the E! Channel. In between promos for awful reality shows, The Kids Are All Right became the torch bearer for gay visibility at this year's awards. Let's take a closer look at this year's noms!
Best Picture:
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The Kids Are All Right
The King's Speech
127 Hours
The Social Network
Toy Story 3
True Grit
Winter's Bone
First thoughts - A few weeks ago, The Social Network seemed like a lock for the win, but The King's Speech has the momentum now. The dark horse is probably Black Swan. As for The Kids Are All Right? Not a chance..
Best Director:
Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
David O. Russell, The Fighter
Tom Hooper, The King's Speech
David Fincher, The Social Network
Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, True Grit
First thoughts - Finally,...

“We have been slacking a little bit this year, so I do apologize on behalf of all of us here at Psych. But they are coming,” Dulé Hill says, when asked what ’80s songs we can expect performed in Psych-Outs this season. So far, they’ve filmed one, with upcoming guest star Curt Smith from Tears for Fears. Songs that may make the cut: “Maybe ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart.’ Maybe ‘We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off” by Jermaine Stewart. Maybe. Maybe is always the key word.” Here, Hill answers more questions from EW readers (and...
