First things first: it could be as long as a year before Joe Dante’s newest feature, The Hole, is released theatrically in North America. Those who are disappointed to hear this news should take solace in the following statement: it will be well worth the wait.
Produced independently by Bold Films and screened for potential distributors in Toronto and Venice (where it won the first ever prize for Best 3D film, beating out such prestigious competitors as Disney/Pixar’s Up), director Dante even expressed some apprehension about interviews and promoting the movie this early. His concern was that by the time The Hole would be finally unleashed on audiences, some might believe that the movie was old and had already been released (hope he doesn’t mind this review). However, with proper marketing, this title should prove more than successful and, like many of the director’s previous titles, »

In this 3-D thriller from the director of Gremlins and The Howling , a family moves into a new residence - where they meet, as Bennett describes herself, "the girl next door" - and discovers a sinister hole in their basement. "I think you can say this is the lost Twilight Zone episode. But they didn't do any in 3-D," laughs director Joe Dante ( Gremlins , The Howling ). He's minutes away from taking the stage of Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con where he'll show the crowd a trailer for his latest feature The Hole in 3-D. It's his first feature to hit the big screen since Looney Tunes: Back in Action . Since that 2003 release, he helmed two Masters of Horror episodes ("Homecoming" and "The Screwfly Solution") and a zombie-themed CSI:ny . The Hole stars Teri Polo, Haley Bennett, Nathan Gamble and Quinn Lord. Written by Mark L. Smith ( Vacancy ), it concerns a family that moves into a new home. There they discover a hole in the basement that feeds off of their... »

Among the 3-D films previewed in the cavernous, packed Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con this year, two elicited chills, gasps and nervous laughter from the audience on Thursday afternoon. The Hole , Joe Dante's latest picture written by Vacancy scribe Mark L. Smith, was the first genre project touted during a special 3-D presentation. And Dante stepped out, with star Haley Bennett ( The Haunting of Molly Hartley ), to show off a trailer and clip, albeit the latter was not in 3-D. The trailer showed a ton of promise, however, as Dante said, if you're going in looking for gory thrills, look elsewhere. This is a film about old school frights as the preview offered a bit of the story. Essentially, a family moves into a new town and two brothers discover, with the cute neighbor... »

While speaking on last week’s edition of Fangoria Radio, fave director Joe Dante (pictured) discussed The Hole, the 3-D feature that marks his return to big-screen fright fare after his well-received pair of Masters Of Horror episodes. “I had a great time doing Masters with Mick [Garris],” he said, “because the whole idea was, if we did them on a low budget really quickly, we could do whatever we wanted.
“After doing Looney Tunes, a big-studio movie that took a year and a half and was fairly contentious through its entire making, and then opened to a world that had given up on Bugs Bunny because the cartoons had been off television for like 2 years, I thought, ‘Maybe I should try and do something more independent,’ ” he continued, noting that on Masters, “The content was not an issue. There were no focus groups and no teenagers writing on cards; it »

One of the positives of Vacancy 2: The First Cut is that its existence suggests that the efficiently scary original, a box-office disappointment in theaters, found a wider audience on video—enough to encourage the production of this Sony Pictures direct-to-disc follow-up. Another is that as DVD sequels go, this one doesn’t shame its predecessor.
It no doubt helped that producer Hal Lieberman and scripter Mark L. Smith both returned for the second round (while foreign import Nimrod Antal was replaced by domestic indie-film stalwart Eric Bross as director). This is another in the reductive trend of prequels that attempt to explain just why their murderers do what they do, but for the first 20 minutes, Smith seems to be onto something as he traces the evolution of his villains from voyeuristic pornographers to snuff purveyors. Gordon (David Moscow, the boy who became Tom Hanks in Big, now grown up and styled—intentionally, »
