New Delhi, March 7 (Ians) Independent musicians in India, up until the pandemic, depended heavily on word of mouth to promote their music, and live shows played a big role. However, ever since lockdown was imposed due to Covid-19, live shows dried up, pushing musicians -- especially those who werent signed up with big music labels -- to adapt, and so they did.
Plenty of indie musicians, restricted at home, started creating music within the confines of their four walls, and the result was fantastic. 2020 was probably the biggest year in terms of independent music releases.
"India's rapidly evolving music audience is now open to discovering music outside of the Bollywood landscape. We are witnessing a sea change moment for music consumption in India. We have a new mobile-first generation of smartphone users, consuming more original music than ever before," says Indian-American rapper Raja Kumari.

In October 2016, Al Jazeera did a stunning piece on the hottest new scene in Mumbai town: underground rap. It looked very closely at “Indianizing Hip-hop” specifically through the eyes of one rapper Navid Shaikh or Naezy. Only 2 years on and this same theme is now a major Bollywood film Gully Boy. Directed by Zoya Akhtar and led by Ranveer Singh, this story tells not only of Naezy’s rise to the heights of this young movement but also compatriot Divine in a musical album subtitled “Apna Time Aayega”. Its music would not be complete or correct without inputs from Divine and Naezy themselves but also from a multitude of the stars of this form with Spitfire, Rishi Rich and Dub Sharma just to name a few also getting in on the act. To round the album with the necessary non-rap songs Karsh Kale, Ankur Tewari and Jasleen Royal also make major contributions.

Compared with the hype surrounding Shahrukh Khan’s Ra.One, his second and last release for the 2011, Don 2: The Chase Continues (Don 2) makes its entry with a whisper rather than bang. While Don: The Chase Begins Again (Don 1) had immense pressure on the makers to aesthetically re-create the yesteryear favourite, the sequel has not been subject to such expectations. Don 2 is an entirely new and different concept, opening the makers to a goldmine of creative opportunities. Arguably, this applies to the music directors, Shankar-Eshaan-Loy (Sel), more so than the reminder of the film’s cast and crew.
Don 2 sees Sel reprise their role as music directors while Javed Akhtar reprises his as lyricist. No surprises there as all Excel Entertainment ventures have featured the lyrical and musical combination of Sel and Javed Akhtar exclusively since their advent in 1999. The album comprises of 11 tracks and...

Mumbai, Oct 1: Usually people enter Bollywood and then forget their original roots, but musicians Gaurav Raina and Tapan Raj of electronica band Midival Punditz are determined that their non-film projects will be their priority always.
The Delhi-based duo, who have composed the music for 'Soundtrack', earlier scored music for 'Karthik Calling Karthik' and 'Dum Maaro Dum'.
In 'Soundtrack' they have collaborated with musician and composer Karsh Kale. However, they maintained that their crossover in Bollywood doesn't mean that they have.

After a glimpse of the arresting background score from Dum Maaro Dum, Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale have teamed up as music directors for Neerav Ghosh’s Soundtrack. The film is an official remake of the cult hit It’s All Gone Pete Tong about an Ibiza DJ whose chaotic lifestyle coincides with him going deaf. The original had a rollicking soundtrack of club hits by Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode, and others. Teaming two of the most popular remix and chill out artists the expectations are bound to be huge for this album. Does it succeed expectations?

Karthik Calling Karthik
Rubik’s Cube has as many uses as it has colours. Apparently playing with it is considered therapeutic. From Tennis Elbow to Schizophrenia, it can help restore many a physical and mental anomalies. It has also made quite a few screen appearances as a puzzle that characters routinely solve to convince audience of their high intelligence levels (I remember last seeing it in ‘In Pursuit of Happiness’). In Karthik Calling Karthik, it’s been used to reflect the entropy in Farhan Akhtar’s (Karthik’s) life. Capturing it in various stages of completion throughout the film, director Vijay Lalwani uses it as a leitmotif to punctuate Karthik’s unstable character graph. It’s a good ploy, except that it also mirrors the chaos clouding the screenplay.
Karthik is meek and introverted. The guilt of having been responsible for his bully brother’s death gnaws on his psyche endlessly.
