The story of Rupert Murdoch’s rise to become the world’s biggest media mogul looks set to become an Australian TV telemovie,
Screen Australia has provided funding development for the work which is being written by Bob Ellis and Stephen Ramsay.
The announcement comes days after Southern Star’s production of Howzat, the story of how Australian media mogul Kerry Packer took on the cricket establishment delivered the Nine Network with 2m+ ratings.
The series has the working title of The News of the World.
The British Sunday tabloid the telemovie is named after was closed by Murdoch last year in the wake of the phone hacking scandal.
Bob Ellis wrote the Australian journalism drama Newsfront and most recently ABC’s Infamous Victory: Ben Chifley’s Battle for Coal while Stephen Ramsey wrote and directed The Baby Boomers Picture Show and Flashbacks.

More versions of the new brand campaign for Woolworths from Droga 5 go to air tonight featuring employees and suppliers.
There are 12 different commercials, which seek to emphasise that most Woolworths fresh produce is Australian grown.
As Mumbrella reported yesterday, the campaign is the first major work since Droga5 won the Woolworths account.
The staff come after a casting call featuring 400 people which was eventually whittled down to 55 call-backs and eventually cast nine people.
Among those featuring was truckie Harold Haigh, who travelled to South Australia for the shoot, his first time on a plane despite 20 years on the road.
The production featured four crews shooting simultaneously across the country, on formats including 16mm, digital, VHS and iPhone. The entire project was overseen by Exit director Amy Gebhardt .
David Nobay, Droga5 Creative Chairman added; “A lot of people scratched their heads when they saw Droga5 and Woolworths together in the same sentence,...

Beautiful Kate is one of those rare films that offer rather controversial and taboo subject matter while at the same time, remaining tasteful and classy. An Australian production based on Newton Thornburg’s novel of the same name, Beautiful Kate is an honest portrayal of dysfunctional family life.
The film opens with Ned Kendall (Ben Mendelsohn), a man in his early 40s who is driving to see his ailing father played with much grumpiness by Bryan Brown. Along for the ride is Ned’s sexy and much younger fiancée, Toni (Maeve Dermody). They stay with Ned’s younger sister, Sally (Rachel Griffiths), at the Kendall family home located in a remote part of rural Australia. While they are there, Ben has flashbacks of when he was a teenager and the scandalous relationship he had with his twin sister, Kate, played by the lovely Sophie Lowe.

- Lots of glossy business cards will be exchanged during the 4th edition of International Financing Forum (Iff) (which takes place during Tiff). In what I imagine is like a speed dating between producers looking for coin and those looking to finance the next hot film project. There are a slew of names/projects from established filmmakers (Hany Abu-Assad, Terrence Davies and Kevin Macdonald) and some first-time directors among the 43 listed below that have caught over attention. Hany Abu-Assad is taking on what I imagine would be a controversial biopic - attaching himself to Arafat with his Paradise Now producer, Roman Paul. Paul produced Waltz with Bashir, and the upcoming (we'll be talking about this one in 2010), Womb. I'd be surprised if Tony Grisoni took a day off in the past 24 months, he has penned a truck load of projects and would embark on his feature filmmaking debut with Kingsland.
