Stars: Yumiko Hara, Eihi Shiina, Kazuki Namioka, Yûrei Yanagi | Written by Yoshihiro Nishimura, Daichi Nagisa | Directed by Yoshihiro Nishimura
For people who are used to “J-sploitation” films they will know what’s coming when I tell you that Helldriver comes from the same people who gave us Tokyo Gore Police. I’ll admit I’m a lover of Tokyo Gore Police, I love it’s all out gore, it’s attempts to shock and the fact it’s all out crazy. Helldriver is very similar in that approach, and it’s got a chick with a chainsaw sword, where can it go wrong?
The story set up for Helldriver is simple. There is the need for revenge as a daughter see’s her father killed by her evil mother and uncle, people are being turned into alien zombie type creatures by a strange ash and the government has no...

*here be spoilers.
Director: Yoshihiro Nishimura.
Writers: Yoshihiro Nishimura and Daichi Nagisa.
Cast: Yumiko Hara, Eihi Shiina and Kazuki Namioka.
Very rarely will Japanese horror cinema, if Yoshihiro Nishimura's Helldriver can be called that, be considered art. In this film's case, maybe it should be called the finest example of nihilism—mostly with zombies as its victims—while plodding through a very thin plot about a girl yearning for revenge.
Just prior to the actual story, the film has a moment where all that happens is a mysterious stranger jumping over a wall and harvesting zombie antlers for some unknown reason. After this curious montage, the actual story takes place in one extended flashback: an innocent Kika (Yumiko Hara) arrives home only to discover her maniacal mother Rikka (Eihi Shiina) and homicidal uncle turning her father's legs into ground meat. They are getting ready to cook him up. Kika tries to escape,...

Monster Brawl
Director/writer: Jesse T. Cook
Country: Canada
Running Time: 85 mins
Certificate: 18
Starring: Dave Foley, Art Hindle, Robert Maillet, Kevin Nash, Jimmy Hart, Herb Dean
The writer and director of 2008's horror flick Scarce, Jesse T. Cook, revisits the genre in his latest film Monster Brawl. “The time will come when monsters shape the futures of all” begins a suitably jocular voice-over that introduces us to the “most highly-anticipated extreme sport ever”. Making a horror enthusiast's hypothetical pub chat a reality, Cook pits some of the genre's most celebrated figures against each other in the wrestling ring.
Eight of the most powerful ghouls of all time from all four corners of the earth come together and are structured into “two conferences” with middle and heavy weight “monsters” and “creatures”, such as “Witch Bitch”. An American TV show set-up is quickly established with presenter, Buzz Chambers hosting from a secret cemetery location.

Japanese production house Sushi Typhoon returns with more blood soaked insanity in “Helldriver”, directed by “Tokyo Gore Police” and “Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl” helmer Yoshihiro Nishimura. Given Nishimura’s past works and his background as a special effects wizard, it should come as no surprise to learn that the film is a gibbering gore-fest which basically plays out like one crazed set piece and sees him constantly trying to one-up himself. The film reunites the director with striking “Tokyo Gore Police” actress Eihi Shiina (who made a lasting impression on audiences in Takashi Miike’s “Audition”), with Yumiko Hara in the lead and support from the likes of Yurei Yanagi (“Gothic & Lolita Psycho”), Kazuki Namioka (“Zebraman 2”) and Kentaro Kishi (“RoboGeisha”), plus the usual cameos from several of the Sushi Typhoon gang. The film doesn’t have a plot, so much as a setup, taking place in a Japan which...

This story updates an early post with the exclusive new UK trailer for 13 Assassins. There is no escape from the samurai mayhem...Takashi Miike has been beloved of cult audiences for years, but it looks as it he might have a bona-fide breakout international hit on his hands if this new UK trailer for 13 Assassins is anything to go by.Known for mad horror (Audition), extreme violence (Ichi the Killer), and working very quickly on the cheap, Miike seems here to have turned in a spectacular historical action epic. Still plenty of blood and killing though, and a murdered woman in the trailer's opening seconds, so par for the Miike course in some ways. brightcove.createExperiences();13 Assassins is a remake of the 1963 Eiichi Kudo film, in which the baker's dozen samurai take on a sadistic warlord against - what else? - insurmountable odds. Helldriver is the latest movie from Sushi Typhoon, the Japanese producing outfit behind Alien vs. Ninja, and Mutant Girls Squad and tells the story of:
An alien-spawned, mysterious mist blankets the northern half of Japan, transforming those who inhale it into ravenous, flesh-eating zombies hell-bent on devouring the surviving human population. Plunged into chaos, Japan is torn in two—the southern half of the country, where the populace remains untouched by the deadly gas, lives behind a heavily-fortified wall, while the northern half is a lawless, zombie-infected wasteland. Political forces are locked in a stalemate over whether the living dead should remain protected as family members or exterminated like a plague. The economy withers away, and all hope seems lost for the people and the nation of Japan.
Hope arrives in the form of Kika (Yumiko Hara), a beautiful high school girl armed with a chainsaw sword powered by an artificial heart.

Controversial Japanese director Takashi Miike is a very busy man these days.
13 Assassins
Two new projects for him this year, Zebraman 2 and something that’s already being described as “an epic samurai bloodbath” and the reason why we’re here today movie titled 13 Assassins.
When you’re that busy, then you definitely deserve to have a movie playing In Competition at the Venice Film Festival 2010.
The film is a remake of Eiichi Kudo’s 1963 black-and-white Japanese movie of the same name, and the story follows:
“Esteemed samurai Shinzaemon Shimada is secretly commissioned to terminate the evil Lord Naritsugu after his bloody rise to power. Assembling an elite group of samurai, Shinzaemon plots to ambush the Lord on his annual journey home from Edo.
The courageous samurai know it’s a suicide mission because the Lord is closely protected by a deadly entourage led by Shinzaemon’s nemesis, the ruthless Hanbei.

Sweet Samurai Jesus.
It was only yesterday that we put up five pics from the upcoming redo of 13 Assassins by Takashi Miike and like that we now know who all 13 actors will be. Led by Koji Yakusho, who most around these parts would know from Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Retribution, Cure, Pulse, Tokyo Sonata, to name a few, in the lead assassin role of Shimada Shinzaemon, the other dozen actors are Hiroki Matsukata [Izo], Yusuke Iseya [Blindness, Sukiyaki Western Django and Casshern], Takayuki Yamada [Crows Zero films and Mw], Tsuyoshi Ihara [Letter from Iwo Jima], Arata Furuta [Tokyo Zombie and Zebraman], Ikki Sawamura [Gokusen: The Movie and Steamboy], Sousuke Takaoka [Crows Zero films, Blue Spring and Battle Royale], Yuma Ishigaki [Gokusen: The Movie, Azumi 2 and Battle Royale 2], Masataka Kubota, Seiji Rokkaku [My Boss, My hero], Kazuki Namioka [Crows Zero films, L Change the World and Midnight Eagle], and Koen Kondo [Linda Linda Linda, Zebraman and Nodome Cantabile].
That is a fine mix of veteran and young talent. Filming has only just begun and is expected to go into September which means we still have a ways to go before we get to see this.
