The Thompsons (2012) Directorial duo The Butcher Brothers (aka Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores) follow up their 2006 family themed vampire flick “The Hamiltons” with “The Thompsons”, offering up more of the same as the clan quit the Us for the English countryside after an unfortunate incident has them on the run from the police. With older brother David (Samuel Child, also in the Brothers’ “The Violent Kind”) looking after the gravely injured youngest family member Lenny (Ryan Hartwig, recently in Steven C. Miller’s awesome “The Aggression Scale”) while the twins (Mackenzie Firgens and Joseph McKellheer) lurk in Paris, it’s left to Francis (Corey Knauf) to follow up a vague lead on other vampires in a small village called Ludlow in rural England. There he meets the Stuart family, upper class vampires who initially offer their help, but quickly are revealed to have their own less than decent intentions. Coming in below the radar,...

Written and directed by Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores Aka The Butcher Brothers, The Violent Kind is a film that I have mixed feelings about.
The movie opens with three members of a Northern California biker gang, Cody (Cory Knauf), Q (Bret Roberts) and Elroy (Nick Tagas) beating the crap out of someone over a bad drug deal or something. Okay so it’s established that they are a pretty violent crew. Three are headed to an isolated mountain cabin to celebrate Cody’s mom’s birthday with the rest of the gang. The party isn’t going so well for Cody—he’s been informed that he has to take on a crap job (he was born into the gang, his dad being an original member) and then his ex-girlfriend Michelle (Tiffany Shepis) shows up with another guy.
Cody’s mood lifts a bit...

There are a lot of terrible horror movies out there. Possibly more than any other genre, horror seems to appeal to wannabe filmmakers who figure it’s easy and cheap to pull off a scary movie – and thanks to the success of many low budget horror movies, distributors seem to be putting out an awful lot of them. So I’d understand if you didn’t want to trawl through an endless sea of crap to find the few real gems amongst the cinematic slurry.
But I’m an addict, and keep coming back for more punishment. The payoff is that sometimes, very occasionally, you discover something brilliant. Here are 25 great horror movies that you probably haven’t seen, possibly haven’t even heard of (some of them don’t even...

Cody (Knauf), a second-generation member of a violent and notorious Nor-Cal biker gang, ride out with his friends to party at a cabin located deep within the redwood forest. At the end of the wild evening, things take a turn for the worse when Cody’s ex-girlfriend Michelle (Shepis) is discovered wandering aimlessly and covered in blood, screaming and convulsing as if she were possessed by something unworldly. Cody (Cory Knauf) is a second-generation member of a California biker gang. One night, he and his best friend Q (Bret Roberts) along with assorted other members of their biker fraternity head out to a remote farmhouse for a party. Most of the revellers have drifted off when it all starts to get a bit weird, then bloody. The cars won’t start, the lights are on the fritz and all of a sudden one of their number is possessed by an other-worldly entity and a 1950′s rockabilly band start dishing out some genuinely unpleasant violence on the rest of them.

The Violent Kind is the latest low budget offering from The Butcher Brothers (The Hamiltons). The story follows our likable lead character Cody (Cory Knauf) and Q (Bret Roberts) who are tough neighborhood punks who like to fight, a lot! Throw Cody’s ex-girlfriend Michelle (Tiffany Shepis) , her younger sister Megan (Christina Prousalis) and several strong supporting cast members in and we have us a weird, twisted and ultra violent party movie.
The story takes our “gang” up to the woods to a cabin to, what else? Party! It’s all good times when all of a sudden the camera shows us that there are others watching. We watch Cory deal with his ex Michelle who is at the cabin with her new bf. Cory is the cool, calm and collected one of the entire group and plays it cool. Of course, we have our hot-heads, funny guys and beautiful...

If a film like The Violent Kind can actually get distribution, any movie, no matter how bad it is can get distribution. I saw The Violent Kind at The Sundance Film Festival last year, and it was seriously the worst movie I think I've ever seen, even for a B style horror movie. I know there is an audience out there for this kind of thing, but this was just a very poorly made film, with a terrible schizophrenic story and script. I had nothing good to say about it in my review. Here's excerpt from my review:
I have nothing good at all to say about this film, it was unforgivably bad. Everything about it was top notch awfulness. The story was incoherent, you never had any idea what in the hell was going on. Nothing is ever explained! I honestly don’t think the filmmakers even knew what...

The Butcher Brothers' (Mitchell Altieri, Phil Flores) latest effort, The Violent Kind, has been acquired for Us distribution by Image Entertainment. The 2010 Sundance Film Festival selection will hit limited theaters before going to both DVD and Blu-ray. In addition, we got our hands on a new two-minute long clip that takes you inside the madness. One night at a secluded farmhouse deep in the Northern California woods, a small group of hardened young bikers and their girlfriends are tormented when one of the girls becomes savagely possessed and a gang of "Rockabillies" seemingly from the 1950's descends upon them to collect what is growing inside her. Cory Knauf, Taylor Cole, Bret Roberts, Christina Prousalis, Tiffany Shepis, and Joe Egender all star.

As we end the Summer of 2010, we leave a series of box office bombs behind us, and look forward to an incredible film festival season this fall. With such film festivals as Toronto, New York, and Venice to look forward to, this year may still be saved for the cineastes of the world. One film festival in particular that may not be on your radar, but deserves to be placed alongside those others, is Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, taking place September 23-30.
Last month they announced their first wave of films (listed below), and this morning, they’ve announced their second wave, a total of 16 more films. Directed by Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores, who refer to themselves as The Butcher Brothers, The Violent Kind is their third feature film following The Hamiltons (2006) and April Fool’s Day (2008).
The film begins with a sex scene between a man and woman which climaxes with the woman punching the man in the face. The man then walks outside and gets in a fight with someone he owes money to and assisted by his friends they beat hell out of him. The three friends are members of a Californian biker gang and sex and violence are very much part of their lives. The opening credits play against this back drop of violence and a selection of headlines about biker gang violence.
The film at this point, only around 15 minutes in, seems to shift in tone to be much more serious and dramatic than the opening. After this schlocky, ripped from...

The final Friday of Fantasia 2010 brought us one of the highlights of this year’s festival: director Christopher (Creep) Smith’s necromancer plague drama Black Death. Playing as the perfect accompaniment to Ken Russell’s The Devils, Black Death is a very subdued and naturalistic take on pestilence and witchcraft.
The film uses the backdrop of medieval superstition as a metaphor for modern-day religious propaganda and state sponsored fundamentalism. With influences as far ranging as In the Name of the Rose, Wicker Man, and Witchfinder General, it turned out to be a crowd pleasing and blessedly subtle take on an oft covered theme that stands out as one of the best of the sub-genre. Check out McCannibal’s Black Death review here.

If you were among the hundreds of people who were shut out of screenings of the film Rubber at the Fantasia film fest (or the thousands of us who didn't even make it up to Canada in the first place), then quite possibly a trip to Austin, Texas, is in your future as the flick has just shown up on the first wave of programming for the sixth edition of Fantastic Fest, happening September 23rd-30th.
Thirteen films are listed in the first press release for the Fest, and we're including them all here, even if a few aren't strictly horror, just to give you an idea of how truly diverse Fantastic Fest is:

Filmmaking pair Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores, known as The Butcher Brothers, share some insight on their latest horror flick, “The Violent Kind.” This latest film of insane, exploitation horror follows two members of a biker gang who arrive at a secluded cabin party that goes horribly awry. Altieri and Flores, known for the cult hit “The Hamiltons,” attempt to define their unique brand of horror and provide some commentary on the vast world within the horror genre. Most of the “The Violent Kind” cast has worked with the directors before, and Altieri describes the comfort this lends him while on set. Flores muses on the experience of watching horror movies in a theater and communally suffering through a twisted tale. Finally, the duo hint at a possible future project and also discuss their admiration for David Lynch, who they cite as a major influence on their work, and recount meeting the director.

Another entry in Sundance's very strong Park City at Midnight program, The Butcher Brothers' The Violent Kind is sexy, bloody, and way out there. In other words, it's a lot of fun. The Butchers are able to change courses multiple times, constantly upping the ante to the point where all of humanity might just be at stake.
We meet Cody (Cory Knauf), his cousin Q (Bret Roberts) and their buddy Elroy (Nick Tagas) when the guys get in a driveway brawl over some bunk drugs Q sold. The guys are second generation of a Nor Cal bike gang and everyone is heading up to an old farm house to celebrate Cody's mom's birthday. It is not Cody's night. Q and the guys are mad about a deal he messed up and his ex-girlfriend Michelle (Tiffany Shepis) shows up with a new guy. Things take a bit of a turn...

It was announced on Friday via The Hollywood Reporter that The Butcher Brothers, currently at Sundance to promote their film, The Violent Kind, were already hard at work on their next project. Entitled Black Sunset, the psychological horror film would be written and directed by The Butcher Brothers, Mitch Altieri and Phil Flores.
We Are Movie Geeks got a chance to sit down with The Butcher Brothers to discuss The Violent Kind, and we asked them what they could tell us about Black Sunset.
Says Altieri:
It’s a cool, hardcore, psychological horror film about a group of surfers who take a trip down to Mexico. We’re gonna call it Lords Of Dogtown meets The Shining.
Flores added:
It’s kind of like a page out of Endless Summer but with a lot of blood.
Check back later today for our full interview with the guys. The Violent Kind premieres at Sundance Monday night.

With the Sundance premiere of their latest low budget horror flick The Violent Kind just around the corner, word has come out on San Francisco directing duo The Butcher Brothers' next feature. Titled Black Sunset the film revolves around a group of friends on a surfing trip to Mexico that turns - not surprisingly - bloody and vicious. The Brothers wrote this one, which will be backed by indie start-up Queen Nefertari Productions.
