After breaking into NASA to make his last movie, “Operation Avalanche,” one would think that “BlackBerry” — a film that, on paper, sounds like a standard book adaptation about a Canadian boom-and-bust story — would be a walk in the park for Matt Johnson.
For anyone else, it might have been. But short-cuts don’t compute for the Toronto-based helmer. His outright rejection of Hollywood’s camera tricks in place of a wild do-it-yourself approach has made him one of the most radical new voices emerging from Canada.
In “BlackBerry,” which world premieres on Friday, Johnson tackles the story of one of Canada’s greatest modern inventions, the BlackBerry mobile phone — tracing its spectacular ascent into a global phenomenon that brought email to users’ fingertips, to its tragic downfall in the wake of corporate mismanagement and the dawn of Apple’s iPhone.
“It’s an odd couple, that’s for sure,” Johnson admits.

Tom White is stepping down as editor of Documentary magazine, after more than 22 years at the helm of the IDA publication.
It’s the latest staff departure at the International Documentary Association and follows the surprise resignation announcement made earlier this month by IDA executive director Rick Pérez, whose decision takes effect on Friday.
White’s resignation becomes effective January 4, 2023. In a message posted on Facebook (see full text below), he wrote, “My mental health–namely, my depression–instigated by the exodus of 18 of my colleagues since the beginning of this year, and the toxic context that spurred that exodus, has worsened over the past several months, and it would be best for me, and for the organization, to bow out at this point.”

Updated from original 9:17 p.m. story with more quotes from winners: Shaunak Sen’s All That Breathes won the top prize at the 38th IDA Documentary Awards in Hollywood tonight, cementing its status as an Oscar frontrunner.
The documentary, about two brothers in Delhi, India who tend to injured and ailing birds of prey, earned Best Feature, and Sen was named Best Director. All That Breathes also collected the award for Best Editing, recognizing the work of Charlotte Munch Bengtsen and Vedant Joshi.
“The film itself really feels like a tiny miracle,” Sen noted as he accepted the Best Feature award, “because Aman [producer Aman Mann] and I, we couldn’t believe we got financing, we couldn’t believe that we found producers, festivals, distributors, so it really feels a bit unbelievable.”
All That Breathes, from Sideshow, Submarine Deluxe and HBO Documentary Films, also won the previously-announced Pare Lorentz Award.

Exclusive: The International Documentary Association has added three new board members and hired a director of development.
Joining the board are Maria Agui-Carter, a filmmaker, founder of Iguana Films, and professor at Emerson College; Michael Turner, director and senior counsel-original documentary films at Netflix, and Ina Fichman, a documentary producer whose credits include Fire of Love and The Oslo Diaries.
The trio will fill a void left by board members James Costa, Fonda Berosini, Lauren Lexton, and Caroline Libresco, who completed their terms. Fichman’s appointment is especially noteworthy because her production company, Intuitive Pictures, is based in Montreal and she serves on the board of the Hot Docs festival in Toronto and chairs the national board of the Documentary Association of Canada.

(Note: Birth times for both Quintanilla and Pérez have not yet officially been released. These charts were generated based on generic timing).
Selena Quintanilla and Chris Pérez were sort of like the Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt of Tejano music. They were iconic, Chicanx royalty, and the couple that everyone wanted to see win. Quintanilla was the pristine "good girl next door" who met her "bad boy" match. We all admired their love story vicariously, como si fuera brujería. It was safe to say we were under their love spell. JLo and Ben can have several seats next to Selena and Chris, whose love story is still seen as one of the greatest of all time.

The "Queen of Tejano music" was known for her Beyoncé-like work ethic. Quintanilla crafted an immaculate reputation of pop icon perfectionism for future artists to match.

The IDA has announced the hiring of two senior staff members and a consultant, in what the embattled organization calls “a major step forward.”
Arts administrator and film festival programmer Keisha Knight has been appointed director of IDA Funds and Enterprise Program, a critical role that involves interfacing with grant-making entities that fund IDA initiatives.
“In this capacity [Knight] will oversee a portfolio of IDA’s granting programs,” the IDA said in a release, “including IDA Enterprise Documentary Fund, Logan elevate and Equity grants, and the Pare Lorentz Documentary Fund, Xrm Media Incubator, and Netflix Global Emerging Filmmaker Award.”

International Documentary Association Says Union Is Welcome After Staff Exodus — but First, a Lawyer
Before he became the executive director of the International Documentary Association, Rick Pérez was a nonfiction director and producer perhaps best known for his 2014 Sundance entry “Cesar’s Last Fast,” which profiled labor leader Cesar Chavez’s 1988 hunger strike.
Now, Pérez finds himself at the center of another union story — but this time, he’s on management’s side.
After losing almost all of his senior staff in protest of “workplace conduct” and the IDA’s “betrayal of public commitments,” the 11 remaining full-time staffers formed a union, Documentary Workers United, under Communications Workers of America, with the express mission to have a say in how the IDA rebuilds.
“It is critical we establish a union because it will help guarantee a safe workplace with transparency, equity, and fairness while providing the staff with opportunities to participate and have a voice in IDA’s management and vision,” the Dwu wrote in its mission statement.

The International Documentary Association says it has agreed to a request by staff to form a union, the latest development in a simmering conflict that has pitted the IDA board and its executive director, Rick Pérez, against rank-and-file employees.
But in a sign that more conflict might be yet to come, employees behind the unionization effort say Pérez has not signed a document necessary to allow the union effort to move forward.
Employees, calling themselves Documentary Workers United, had given Pérez until Tuesday morning to grant “voluntary recognition” to their group, which would operate under the Communication Workers of America Local 9003. Pérez and the IDA board asked for two extensions on the deadline, before it sent a response to staff on Wednesday.

Latin pop icon Selena Quintanilla will always be remembered for her vibrant, catchy musical stylings and her iconic personal style, both of which are boldly on display in the newly released second part of Selena: The Series. The Netflix series explores Quintanilla's rise to stardom and worldwide impact along with the challenges she and her family faced along the way. The second part of the series has left us with plenty of questions, particularly what really happened to Quintanilla's famed boutiques? As it turns out, both Texas locations of Quintanilla's boutique, Selena, Inc., are now closed, but fans can still purchase a select few items from the boutique online.
Quintanilla's dreams of stardom stretched far beyond music; at the height of her fame, she dreamed of opening and running her own boutique. In 1994, the year before her death, Quintanilla opened two boutique locations - one in her native Corpus Christi...

Selena Quintanilla's whirlwind love story with Chris Pérez is one for the books. The two first met in the early '90s when Chris joined Selena's band, Selena y Los Dinos, as a guitarist, and it was pretty much love at first sight. In fact, the first two words that came to Chris's mind when he laid eyes on the Tejano singer were: "beautiful and talented." "I'm a shy person by nature, and there was just something about her that she was able to pull me out," Chris previously told Entertainment Tonight.
26 years after her tragic death, Selena and Chris's heart-wrenching romance is being revisited once again in part two of Netflix's Selena: The Series. In the premiere episode, we see Selena and Chris elope at a Texas courthouse, and yes, that's exactly how things went down in real life.

The subculture of Selena Quintanilla Pérez super-fandom, or Selenidad, was born out of grief. After the Queen of Tejano music was murdered on March 31st, 1995 — shot once in the back by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar — her Mexican American fans mourned her. For some it was like a close relative had been assassinated and an untouchable, living religious diva was extinguished before she could perform her miracles.

Selena Quintanilla was raised in an English-speaking household in Texas. At the same time, she was a Latina who was immensely proud of her Mexican heritage and deeply connected with her Spanish-speaking fans. Contrary to popular belief, Selena was not a fluent Spanish speaker for most of her life, although the lyrics of many of her hits like "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" and "Como la Flor" are in Spanish. Selena's complex identity can be a difficult thing to understand for some, but for the Latinx community, it is second nature.
As Selena rose to fame in Mexico and Latin America, the Tejano icon had to learn how to speak Spanish more fluently in order to connect with her fan base. In Selena: The Series, we see how Selena had to evolve from her English-speaking roots to learning Spanish phonetically with her father through music. We even see TV host Johnny Canales...

An important part of Netflix's Selena: The Series is her heart-wrenching romance with her band's guitarist Chris Pérez, their secret relationship, and their eventual marriage, which lasted three years until the singer's untimely death. Although Quintanilla's father famously disapproved of their relationship, Pérez had a hand in the band's hits, collaborating with Selena's brother on songwriting, and he undoubtedly fell deeply in love with the late icon. But fast-forward to today, and Pérez isn't nearly as close to the family as he once was – reportedly, to the point that he had no idea the new Netflix series was being produced. In fact, on his Instagram, Pérez posted a photo of actor Jesse Posey who plays Pérez in the series, with the caption: "For the record, never met him, haven't seen the script, and I have No idea what is going on... but, I'd love to find out."

Chris Pérez doesn't need a Netflix show to honor the legacy of Selena Quintanilla. He got to experience her greatness firsthand. The 51-year-old guitarist, who was married to the late singer and a part of her band, shared a few memories while weighing in on Selena: The Series. "Alright so, here is my take on this," he wrote on Instagram Thursday, Dec. 3. "I loved her music even before I joined the band. I was intrigued by the fact that her brother [A.B.
