Writing love songs was never really Marina Allen’s thing. “It almost felt like I wasn’t interested,” the 31-year-old Los Angeles songwriter says. “I’ve been in love before, but I don’t think I really could write about it in a way that I felt like I had something to say.”
But all of that changes with Allen’s new album, Eight Pointed Star, out June 7 via Fire Records. Over nine tracks, she spins wistful tales in tones of folk and Americana that mark the first love songs she’s ever written.

Joanna Newsom is currently in the midst of her “Strings/Keys” residency at The Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever in Los Angeles. During her matinee performance on Saturday (May 18th), the singer-songwriter played a set filled with children’s songs and debuted a new composition titled “Rovenshere.”
Newsom had advertised the Saturday show as “not only suitable for children, but specifically designed with them in mind,” which meant playing covers of “Teddy Bears’ Picnic” and Jim Henson’s “Tadpole” and “The Frogs in the Glen” while accompanied by puppeteers.

To close out the concert, however, Newsom treated the audience to the live debut of “Rovenshere,” which features fanciful lyrics like, “Our love is in the very ground/ And suspended in the air/ O’er the land of Rovenshere.” Watch the fan-shot video below.
Elsewhere during her residency, Newsom has been joined on stage by Robin Pecknold and Amber Coffman.

When Bryan Bertino unleashed "The Strangers" onto the world in 2008, I doubt he could have predicted what a phenomenon the story and characters would become. The first-time feature film director took inspiration from the senseless violence that plagues so many people, and a real-life encounter as a child where vandals were randomly knocking on doors in his neighborhood and breaking into houses if no one was home. The terrifying "point" of "The Strangers" was that there was no point. The Man in the Mask, Pin-Up Girl, and Dollface killed Kristen and James because, as Dollface horrifically admits, "because you were home." Alas, with such phenomenal character designs and a cult-like following, "The Strangers" was destined to get the horror franchise treatment. The sequel film "The Strangers: Prey at Night" arrived 10 years after the original, and was surprisingly well received. Unfortunately, the three killers were killed by the film's final girl,...

Joanna Newsom took the stage at Kilby Block Party in Salt Lake City, Utah on Friday night for her first performance of 2024. During her set, she honored her frequent collaborator and “hilarious, loving, loyal friend,” the late Steve Albini.
Albini died from a heart attack in his Chicago home earlier this week, prompting many of his friends and admirers to pay tribute to the pioneering engineer and underground music icon. Newsom, who’s albums Ys and Divers both feature engineering contributions from Albini, joined those ranks with last night’s performance.
“[Albini was someone] who I love very, very much and admire in every possible way you can admire a person,” Newsom told the audience before performing the Ys cut “Cosmia.”
“I was saying to my friend this morning that on the list of all the reasons why he’s my hero, music and music-related stuff doesn’t even crack the top ten,...

Joanna Newsom paid tribute to Steve Albini — the engineer on her acclaimed 2006 album Ys — during the singer’s set Friday at Utah’s Kilby Block Party.
Stereogum reports that prior to Newsom’s performance of “Cosmia,” one of the Ys tracks she recorded with Albini, the singer gave an emotional speech about how much the noise-rock pioneer meant to her.

Joanna Newsom will return to the stage in May for a concert residency at The Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever in Los Angeles.
Dubbed “The Strings/Keys Reincidence,” the acclaimed singer, songwriter, and harpist will perform five solo shows between May 15th and 19th. Notably, her concert on May 18th is a matinee performance that “is strictly for kids under 18 (and their keepers).”
While there’s no explicit promise of new music, a press release does seem to tease as much:
“I know what you’re thinking — we’re all thinking it — What’s in the saddlebag, Newsom? It’s hard to tell from here, but darn if she doesn’t seem to packing some new tunes! What’s your pleasure? The golden oldies? Perhaps a cover song or two? A 17-minuter for the large-bladdered among us? Over the space of these five nights she’ll sing some, strum some,...

A slight but sensitive and fantastically assured debut that unfolds with the pointillistic detail of a great short story, India Donaldson’s “Good One” is a coming-of-age story that jettisons all of the genre’s most familiar trappings in favor of a long walk in the woods.
There were supposed to be four people on the upstate New York camping trip, but one of the teens dropped out because he didn’t want to spend one of their last pre-college weekends sleeping in a polyester tent with his dad. That leaves anxious divorcee Chris, his avuncular best friend Matt, and Chris’ queer 17-year-old daughter Sam (extraordinary newcomer Lily Collias), who dutifully comes along because she’s always seen it as her job to keep what little peace is left in her family. The Beatles are undoubtedly the most acclaimed rock band ever and yet it’s easy to miss the scope of their influence. Elvis Costello gave everyone a rock ‘n’ roll history lesson when he decided to break down how The Beatles inspired artists as varied as Nirvana, Prince, and Green Day. On the same wavelength, Paul McCartney had a lot to say about The Beatles’ importance.
Elvis Costello said The Beatles’ influence paved the way for Outkast and Green Day
In a 2020 piece he wrote for Rolling Stone, Costello ruminated on the Fab Four’s impact. “The word ‘Beatlesque’ has been in the dictionary for quite a while now,” he said. “You hear them in Harry Nilsson’s melodies; in Prince’s Around the World in a Day; in the hits of Elo and Crowded House and in Ron Sexsmith’s ballads. With last year’s Laurel Hell, Mitski elaborated on the eclectic, ’80s-influenced sounds of 2018’s Be the Cowboy, synthesizing the lessons she’d learned from her earlier work about multi-instrumental songwriting and thematic cohesiveness. “According to that pattern,” Mitski told Apple Music at the time, “the next thing I’ll do will be completely different.” Indeed, her seventh album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, delivers on that promise, adapting her poignant lyricism to the acoustic strings and traditionally rural setting of country music.
As always, Mitski’s music aches with longing, and by leaning into a bleak vision of the heartland, she unlocks a gothic sense of dread. “Bug Like an Angel” opens the album with the gory image of a bug stuck to the bottom of a glass. Accompanied only by an acoustic guitar, Mitski sounds like a lonesome country balladeer, or the drinker on the...

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten proper new music from Fleet Foxes, but Robin Pecknold has offered something to tide fans over with live covers of The Strokes’ “Under Control” and Joni Mitchell’s “Hejira.”
“Under Control” was recorded during Fleet Foxes’ show at Forest Hills Stadium in New York last year, while they did “Hejira” during “The Spring Recital” at The Belasco in Los Angeles in March. Frequent collaborators The Westerlies perform horns on both, with Uwade, Daniel Rossen, and Greg Pecknold also contributing.
Understandably, Pecknold has quite a few words to share about his renditions of the two classic songs: “Last summer we were honored to have the incredible vocalist and songwriter Uwade Akhere open for us on tour,” he said in a press release of “Under Control.” “One thing we all bonded over backstage was a shared love of The Strokes — hearing Uwa’s...

Joanna Newsom played her first live show since 2020 on Wednesday night, appearing as the unannounced opening act for Fleet Foxes. During the performance at the Belasco in Los Angeles, Newsom debuted new material, according to fans.
The set was a surprise for the audience, as the Fleet Foxes’ Spring Recital concert touted only a “special guest.” The singer was introduced by Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold, who said, “Without further ado, I present the high priestess of acoustic music, Joanna Newsom.”
Newsom played seven songs, including “Go Long” and “Sawdust & Diamonds.

Just One Film is a series that recommends individual films from festivals around the world—the movies you otherwise might have missed that deserve to be discovered. When American folk singer and guitarist Karen Dalton died in 1993 of an AIDS-related illness at age 55, there were few film recordings or other traces of her as an artist left behind. Her raw, idiosyncratic renditions quickly won admirers like Bob Dylan when she hit New York’s Greenwich Village scene in the ‘60s, but she had a disdain for ingratiating herself to starmakers keen to engineer her image for public consumption that contributed to her existence on the margins of mainstream fame. During her on-off engagement with the business she made only two studio albums, It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You the Best (1969) and In My Own Time (1971), but her cult influence (inspiring artists such as Nick Cave and Joanna Newsom) has only grown.

In time she moved to Philadelphia and formed a blazingly intense indie rock band, Hop Along, which worked its way up to national acclaim and a devoted live audience with 2015’s Painted Shut and 2018’s Bark Your Head Off,...

“It’s hard to think clearly and then say what you mean,” Beach Bunny’s Lili Trifilio sings on the band’s fantastic debut. It’s a line that’s striking in its innocent, unguarded honesty, just as the music is thrilling in its tuneful exuberance. Beach Bunny are four adorable Chicago emo kids in their early twenties who’ve been releasing music for the past few years, mostly teen-themed garage-pop tunes with titles like “Sports” and “Boys” and “Six Weeks,” the latter about the oceanic span of time elapsed since a breakup.

We're still not clear on when it happened, but at some point, funny guy Andy Samberg graduated from Class Clown to Class Man-About-Town, and now we can't stop staring. The 40-year-old Brooklyn Nine-Nine star had always been the kinda-cute guy you'd love to hang out with, but would probably stick in the friend zone, yet there's no denying now that Detective Jake Peralta is a serious hottie. From The Lonely Island to Brooklyn's 99th precinct, Andy is glo-up personified, and luckily, he didn't lose his sense of humor along the way. You sure are a lucky woman, Joanna Newsom.

The sisterly trio Haim are back after a nearly two-year hiatus from making new music, and they’ve got a brand-new music video shot by their frequent filmmaking collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson to prove it. Following past videos for their songs “Right Now,” “Little of Your Love,” and “Night So Long,” the foursome are back together for another winsome look at life in Los Angeles in the form of a fresh video for “Summer Girl.”
This one even includes a cinephilic crossover for the ages: as the trio stroll around Los Angeles and literally shed the seasons, they spend some time at a number of La landmarks, including the Quentin Tarantino-owned New Beverly Cinema on Beverly Boulevard.

After last year’s Golden Globes “blackout” to support women’s equality and a more muted awards season, brighter fashion and bolder jewelry are back on the scene. From stacks of bracelets to glitzy hair clips all in millions of dollars in diamonds, here’s how this year’s contenders have been upping their jewelry game.
Diamond Drop Necklaces
Lady Gaga radiated star power at the Globes in $5 million of Tiffany & Co. diamonds, including the Tiffany Aurora necklace, custom-made with more than 300 diamonds and a 20-carat pear-shaped central stone. Andy Samberg arrived in style for his big hosting gig at the Golden Globes in La on Sunday. Looking sharp in a tux and bow tie, the former SNL star - who already nailed it as an Emmys host in 2015 - held hands with his beautiful wife, Joanna Newsom. If you haven't heard her name much, it's understandable; Andy and Joanna have kept their relationship pretty low profile since they began dating in 2008. They (very) quietly tied the knot in 2013 and (even more quietly) welcomed a baby girl together two years later.
If you're not in the know, here is the scoop on Andy's wife. Joanna Newsom is a 36-year-old übertalented singer and harpist. She was born and raised in Northern California, classically trained to play the harp when she was young, and has folksy, almost childlike vocals. In 2004, she released her debut album, The Milk-Eyed Mender, which featured songs like "Sprout and the Bean,...

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s daughter, Ava Phillippe, has grown up before our eyes. The 18-year-old has become a regular on red carpets alongside her lookalike mom, has half a million followers on Instagram, and recently took part in a very high-fashion debutante ball in Paris. But unlike many celebrity children, Phillippe hasn’t tried her hand at modeling — until now, as she stars in her first-ever campaign for Rodarte alongside pregnant Kirsten Dunst, Tessa Thompson and more stars.

Here’s another reason to be glad that composer Jonny Greenwood received his first Oscar nomination: He and director Paul Thomas Anderson are reteaming with Wordless Music and the London Contemporary Orchestra for two special live orchestra screenings of “Phantom Thread” in the two weeks leading up to the Academy Awards. The two live-score screenings will take place at Bam’s Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn February 24, and at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles March 2.
Brooklyn-based Wordless Music specializes in live-score screenings of what the group deems to be the canon of modern cinema; previous performances include “The Tree of Life,” “Moonlight,” and “Under the Skin” as well as “There Will Be Blood,” for which Greenwood also performed with the group.

My answer to this question this week is the same as it would’ve been last year, and the year before that, in 2014 or 2004: It’s November, so I’m listening to Ben Folds. There are many songs, albums, and artists that I associate with this time of year—“Paper Bag” by Fiona Apple, Ys by Joanna Newsom, the collected works…

If you’re looking for a crash course in what makes Paul Thomas Anderson an auteur filmmaker, look no place else but his music videos. Anderson has directed 15 music videos throughout the course of his career so far, and each one is a succinct lesson in all of his best trademarks, from those technically-dazzling tracking shots to the intimate textures of his extreme closeups.
Anderson’s music video career has always intertwined with his film career. His first video arrived in 1997 with Michael Penn’s “Try,” just a year after his breakout directorial debut “Hard Eight.” Over the next 20 years, the filmmaker would go on to collaborate with Fiona Apple, Joanna Newsom, and Radiohead multiple times. Most recently, Anderson has joined forces with the band Haim to direct several music videos for tracks off their second album, “Something to Tell You.” Three of these videos were edited into a 16-minute short film called “Valentine.

News of Todd Haynes making his first documentary should’ve come as something of a curveball, but it was reported that the “Carol” director is planning a non-fiction project about the Velvet Underground, it seemed like the most natural thing in the world. Haynes’ “Velvet Goldmine” is such a knowing, textured, and vividly remembered reflection on the glam rock era that it can be easy to forget that its story merely alludes to the likes of Lou Reed.
But the fascination the Velvet Underground holds for Haynes isn’t the only thing that makes this newly announced documentary feel like such a perfect pairing between subject and storyteller. With the landmark “The Velvet Underground & Nico” LP, Reed and his cohorts effectively forged a new language for countercultural expression, synthesizing the subversive pop stylings of Andy Warhol into a rock movement that had already been neutered of its rebellious beginnings. With films like “Poison” and “Safe,...

In between directing (and, apparently, shooting,) some of the most acclaimed and essential films of the twenty-first century, filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson has been known as the director of an eclectic array of music videos, with my personal favorite being Joanna Newsom’s “Sapokanikan.” He’s made a habit of working with a few select musicians/bands, including Fiona Apple, Joanna Newsom, and Radiohead.

Paul Thomas Anderson has been involved with the band Radiohead for a few years now. Lead guitarist Jonny Greenwood has composed the scores for the last three Anderson films — “There Will Be Blood,” “The Master,” and “Inherent Vice” — and in turn both collaborated on the documentary “Junun” about the making of an album in Mehrangarh Fort in Rajasthan, India, by Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur. Most recently, Anderson has directed music videos for songs off of Radiohead’s latest album “A Moon Shaped Pool,” such as “Daydreaming” and “Present Tense.” His latest video for the band is for the song “The Numbers,” which features frontman Thom Yorke and Greenwood playing the song in the woods alongside a Roland Cr-78 drum machine. The Lonely Island debuted two ridiculous bangers: "I'm So Humble" and "Mona Lisa," both from the upcoming mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Stopping.
On "I'm So Humble," Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone reunite with Adam Levine, who appeared with Kendrick Lamar on "Yolo," off 2013's Wack Album. On the new song, the Maroon 5 singer croons down-to-earth hooks ("You say I'm a 10, but I'm an eight at best"), while Samberg sings "I guess in a way being gracious is my weakness/ People say I'm so unpretentious for a genius.

Director Paul Thomas Anderson has been returning to his music video roots quite a bit lately, churning out not one but two new joints for Joanna Newsom in recent months, and he's now back behind the camera for Radiohead in support of their soon-to-street album. Read More: Watch: Paul Thomas Anderson Makes A Joanna Newsom Painting in 'Divers' Music Video The band has just released their music video for "Daydreaming," which features Anderson's directorial talents and frontman Thom Yorke taking center stage as a wandering leading man who, we can only presume, is doing some pretty serious daydreaming while strolling around a number of visually arresting locales (including a particularly confusing parking lot -- feel that, Thom!). What starts as a city-set jaunt eventually turns intimate, startling and more than a bit alienating, complete with a final twist that only leads to still more gorgeous imagery. It's already a PTA all-timer.

In his seven feature-length films over the last two decades, there are few filmmakers who have displayed as much skill and artistry with each new work as Paul Thomas Anderson. Then we dive into his more comedic side with Punch-Drunk Love and various comedy sketches and shorts around the era before getting to his portraits of power with There Will Be Blood and The Master. Lastly, it looks at his more groovy side with Inherent Vice, Junun, and recent music videos.
