Dave Grohl appeared on latest episode of the Song Exploder podcast, where he discussed “The Teacher” from Foo Fighters’ latest album, But Here We Are. As Grohl explained in heart-wrenching detail, the 10-minute rock epic was written in tribute to his mother, Virginia Grohl, who passed away in July 2022.
“I was with her for all of the time leading up to her passing,” Grohl told Song Exploder host Hrishikesh Hirway. “Everyday during that period, I would write something on the guitar, because I felt that if I didn’t have that release, I would explode. I would spend the day at the hospital and then try to translate it musically — with no clear intention of what I was trying to achieve. I was finding these chords and progressions that mirrored the way that I felt.”
Having come up with two separate demos, Grohl then tried putting them together: “These two...

Where to Watch “Nadiya Bakes”: Netflix
There’s a camera angle in “Nadiya Bakes” that lets you watch pies and cakes and pastries as they cook. It’s time-lapsed and without the filter of the glass of an oven door, but it’s a tiny touch that shows you that making these kind of delicacies don’t happen by accident.
Host (and all-around ray of enthusiasm) Nadiya Hussain first broke through the TV ranks as a contestant on “The Great British Baking Show.” Over the course of her season, she managed to stand out not just on the strength of her ideas and execution, but through a week-to-week ability to bring some extra passion and energy to a show that’s already brimming with it. She would talk about her family and her childhood, she wasn’t afraid to show emotion, and when...

Where to Watch “Watch the Sound”: Apple TV+
Most music docs are, by their nature, lodged in the past. If people aren’t being shown a moment gone by, they’re talking about it or disputing it or presenting an alternative version. So when “Watch the Sound with Mark Ronson” takes the opportunity to use the past as a bridge to creating something new in the present, you can feel the overall temperature of the project change. With Ronson as the on-screen captain through specific topics in music history, this Apple TV+ show doesn’t always live in that present. But when it does, it’s enough to make you wish there were a dozen more shows trying the same thing.

Netflix chief marketing officer Bozoma Saint John, along with Grammy-winning singer Lizzo and filmmaker-comedian Pardis Parker will explore “The Case For Optimism” — the theme of the Global Ted Conference, which is returning to Monterey, CA, and back in-person in August.
The event was virtual last year, like most others that weren’t canceled outright by the pandemic. Organizers said the upcoming series of talks will focus “on building a brighter future for everyone, celebrating the clear-eyed and the bold of heart, those who don’t shy away from the most intractable-seeming problems but rather step toward them to make the case that, even now, hope is possible.”
Saint John oversees global marketing at streaming giant Netflix. She was previously head of global consumer marketing at Apple Music and iTunes, chief brand officer at Uber, and CMO at Endeavor.

1. “Bridgerton” Season 1
Why Should I Watch? Starring “Derry Girls” icon Nicola Coughlan and featuring Julie Andrews as a narrator named Lady Whistledown, Shonda Rhimes’ first Netflix original series already has three solid gold reasons to try out the hipper, hotter version of “Downton Abbey,” but here are a few more details. The period drama is based on Julia Quinn’s historical romance novels, where Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family, makes her debut onto Regency London’s competitive marriage market. But the eight-book series obviously needs more than just one character’s love story to fill all those pages, so you can expect to see the other Bridgerton children caught up in romantic entanglements of their own.
Bonus Reason: A sexy period drama from the mind behind “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” that’s also an adaptation of a massively popular book series where all...

Translating a podcast to a TV screen is a multi-pronged challenge. For a show like “Song Exploder,” hosted in its audio form over various stretches of its nearly seven-year run by Hrishikesh Hirway, that transfer of ideas meant going from listening to seeing in more ways than one.
Luckily for Hirway, when it came to the start of each episode of the new “Song Exploder” Netflix documentary series, he already had a solid foundation. Like so many other aspects of the TV project, it was a matter of building on what was already there.
“The theme music for the TV show is actually the same opening from the podcast, but with other stuff added on top of it,” Hirway told IndieWire. “The theme on the podcast is a pretty simple thing, a little synth part and a drum part. Other entrepreneurs include Mary and Deborah Jones (aka the Jones sisters), who opened a barbecue restaurant to help Deborah’s daughter pay her way through college, and Abigail Carroll from Portland, Maine, who worked in finance before quitting to pursue a life as an oyster farmer.

Lakeith Stanfield’s Moors project teams with Tune-Yards on the new song “Mango,” a collaboration borne out of the actor and indie rockers’ work on the Boots Riley-directed comedy Sorry to Bother You. Moors, Stanfield’s duo with Song Exploder creator Hrishikesh Hirway, also dropped a colorful new video for “Mango.”
“We became big Lakeith fans by spending hundreds of hours scoring Sorry to Bother You and watching his incredible acting skills. We met at the Sundance premiere, and Lakeith was really into the score so we talked about collaborating,...

There is perhaps no bigger West Wing fan than Hrishikesh Hirway, who has turned his longtime love of Aaron Sorkin’s beloved political drama into the popular recap podcast, The West Wing Weekly, co-hosted by none other than Joshua Malina, who played Will Bailey on the show.
Week to week, Hirway and Malina tap into the pop culture fandom (and nostalgia) surrounding the NBC series as they rewatch and discuss episodes of the show. The pair is currently up to season four, episode nine (“Swiss Diplomacy”) of the show’s seven-season run, meaning they’ve recently passed the halfway mark of their ongoing experiment, which has proved to be wildly successful.
“Josh and I were both really surprised by the reaction the podcast got at first. We were really overwhelmed by how many other West Wing fans there are out there and how passionate they are,” Hirway tells Et, adding they dread the end of the series...

Lin-Manuel Miranda has moved from rapping about the Washington Administration to rapping about the Bartlett Administration. The Tony-winning “Hamilton” creator and “Moana” songwriter has released a new rap set for “The West Wing Weekly,” a podcast that provides in-depth analysis on every single episode of Aaron Sorkin’s famed Bush-era political drama. The show features guest appearances from former political staffers and is co-hosted by “West Wing” cast member Joshua Malina, who provides an insider’s perspective. For this episode, Miranda collaborated with the podcast creator, Hrishikesh Hirway, to create “What’s Next?”, a song named after Martin Sheen’s oft-repeated catchphrase during his run.

“Ginger get the popcorn / The filibuster is in / I’m Toby Ziegler with the drop in / What kind of day has it been?” begins the track, which is accompanied by footage of the show. Created by Aaron Sorkin, “The West Wing” ran for seven seasons between 1999 and 2006 and took place in what increasingly seems like an alternate reality where our elected officials do their utmost to serve the American people rather than themselves.

Long before fans discover the dark depths of “BoJack Horseman” or pick up on the show’s nonstop assault of jokes, they first fall in love with its opening credits. A minute-long fast track through the self-destructive world of the main character, the opening credits get an iconic kick from its theme, a jazzy composition from “The Black Keys” drummer Patrick Carney that captures the core of BoJack’s hard-partying delirium.

The first trailer for the romantic comedy Save the Date, which debuted at Sundance back in January (and hits VOD today), arrived last month. The film is a triumph for writer and director Michael Mohan and his ensemble cast that includes Mark Webber, Alison Brie, Lizzy Caplan, Martin Starr and Geoffrey Arend. Now a new trailer has debuted that's subtle, and let's the critics do most of the talking (including a quote from yours truly calling it "a fantastic film") with only one line of dialogue from the film itself. Also, that song playing is called Good Luck by Hrishikesh Hirway, and the rest of the soundtrack is great, too. Here's the new teaser trailer for Michael Mohan's Save the Date from IFC Films: After an ill-timed and very public marriage proposal, fiercely independent Sarah (Lizzy Caplan) breaks up with her overeager boyfriend Kevin (Geoffrey Arend). Sarah turns...
