J.K. Rowling says that when it comes to the backlash she’s received around her Harry Potter books and her personal stances on the rights and identities of trans people, criticism from her “allies” hit differently than conservatives claiming she was promoting witchcraft.
“If it’s coming from people that you would, well, you would have thought were allies? Yes, that’s absolutely going to hit differently, but I don’t hold myself —” Rowling said before The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling host Megan Phelps-Roper cut her off in the podcast’s latest episode. “I would assume we share certain values. So yeah, that hits differently. Of course, it hits differently.”
Rowling initially addressed the Christian conservative backlash to her books in the U.S. in the podcast’s second episode, which was released Feb. 21. During that hourlong discussion, she explained her view on good and evil through her...

In the latest episode of the podcast The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling, which was released today, the Harry Potter author spoke about the reactions to her 2019 tweet, in which she expressed support for Maya Forstater, a British researcher fired for comments interpreted as anti-trans, and for which she drew condemnation from GLAAD.
At the time, the Harry Potter author took to Twitter to speak out in support of Forstater, saying, “Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real? #IStandWithMaya #ThisIsNotADrill”

In the new podcast The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling, debuting today, the Harry Potter author says she does not concern herself with thoughts of legacy or how she’ll be remembered.
“I do not walk around my house thinking about my legacy,” Rowling says in the first episode, available to stream on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Audible and wherever podcasts are available. “You know, what a pompous way to live your life walking around thinking, ‘What will my legacy be?’ Whatever, I’ll be dead. I care about now. I care about the living.”
Two episodes of the podcast were made available today, with the remaining five episodes to be released in weekly installments.

Jk Rowling has criticised “black-and-white thinking” in her new podcast, The Witch Trials of Jk Rowling, which is partly intended to address the backlash over her comments about the transgender community.
Follow live reactions to the podcast’s release here.
The Harry Potter author has faced repeated criticism in recent years over her various statements about gender ideology, which some have characterised as “transphobic”.
Rowling has always rejected these accusations, saying that she “knows and loves” trans people.
In the second episode of the podcast, host Megan Phelps-Roper examines the impact of the Harry Potter books, which were initially lambasted by evangelist Christian groups who believed they shared heretical themes with children.
“[As an author] You really seem to have this deep awareness of this type of human behaviour – the temptation to fall into this very simplistic black and white kind of morality,” Phelps-Roper told the author.

The Discovery Channel on Sunday evening debuts a six-part series, Why We Hate, that looks at the scientific and evolutionary links to hate by looking at some of the most recent examples of racial and religious violence and discrimination.
Discovery CEO David Zaslav, on a recent visit to Washington, D.C. to screen the first part at Atlantic Live, said that the project was originally conceived with executive producer Steven Spielberg five years ago. But he said that at the time, they did not envision the resurgence of hate, whether it be in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017, or in European countries as they grapple with immigration.
“We were going to be looking retrospectively, and try to understand better,” Zaslav said. “But we never imagined that as you look around the world now, the rise of hate — hate for immigrants, for Jews, for Mexicans, for African-Americans, for Hispanics, hate for ‘the other.

TV hosts get welcomed into people’s living rooms on a regular basis. With “I Love You, America,” Sarah Silverman is making that a two-way invitation. The set of Hulu’s new show features a plaid-draped couch, Abe Lincoln tchotchkes, and roadside diner signs, all capped off by a pull-down Murphy bed.
As always, Silverman is using her personal comedic approach to challenge what certain audiences find acceptable, but particularly in this new venture, she wants people to feel comfortable first.
“This is really everything I dreamed it could be. It doesn’t mean it’s gonna be even anyone else’s cup of tea, but it really is mine. I wanted it to be of this moment in time,” Silverman said in a recent interview with IndieWire.
In its opening episodes, Silverman’s format-fluid interview/commentary/documentary project has ventured out from some familiar coastal climes to different places across the country.

Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man, 500 Days of Summer) is set to direct a film called This Above All. What makes this movie interesting is that it will tell the true-life story of Megan Phelps-Roper, who is a former member of the Westboro Baptist Church, which was founded by her grandfather. As you know the church is known for their hate speak and vicious protests.
The story follows Phelps-Roper’s upbringing around Topeka, Ks where they preached God’s power and damned those who sinned. The church has a long history of picketing the funerals of gay murder victims, those who died of AIDS, our fallen military, the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, and victims of mass shootings — including Aurora, Co, where thousands showed up to block them, and in Orlando, where a wall of people worked hard to block church signs from the sight lines of grieving mothers burying their children.

In The New Yorker's fascinating exploration of Megan Phelps-Roper's decision to leave the Westboro Baptist Church, the granddaughter of church founder Fred Phelps reveals that her disenchantment with her family's beliefs sprung from their reaction to the death of Brittany Murphy in 2009. As Phelps-Roper tells reporter Adrian Chen, she learned of Murphy's death on Twitter, where she was active in spreading the church's antigay message. Her fellow churchgoers were delighted by the news: "Lots of people were talking about going to picket her funeral," she recalled. But she couldn't muster the same glee. She tells Chen she "had loved Murphy in Clueless, and she felt an unexpected pang — not quite sadness, but something close — over her death." Seeing all the mournful tweets about Murphy made Phelps-Roper stop and reconsider the Church's message of hate — "I felt like I would be such a jackass to go on...

Brainwashed. Manipulated. Controlled.
Those are the words former Westboro Baptist Church (Wbc) member Lauren Drain used to describe her time as part of the controversial organization during an interview Monday on "Piers Morgan Tonight."
Drain, now 27, was thrown out of the Wbc at the age of 22. She has recently written a memoir about her experiences.
On Monday, Drain told Morgan about the control Wbc members wield, especially over children in the group.
"They control what you believe, what you say, what you do, what friends you have," Drain said. "They say everyone on the outside's evil. And they don't allow any outside influence at all."
Wbc members claim to speak for God, Drain said, which is how they dismiss outsiders who criticize the group for its virulently hateful rhetoric.
"It's unfortunate and it's atrocity, the things that they do and say -- horrible things they do and say," Drain told Morgan.

The religious zealots who protested Ronnie James Dio at his memorial service have now turned their attention to Lady GaGa in a new online video spoof. The Westbrook Baptist Church's Megan Phelps-Roper has revamped GaGa's "Telephone" for a new promo, entitled "Ever Burn".
In the spoof, Phelps-Roper, the granddaughter of the church's Reverend Fred Phelps, sings, "Stop praying, stop praying, God will not hear you anymore/You taught the boys and the girls to be proud whores... Go devil spawn, you just keep pushing on to the hell where you will forever burn."
It's the second time this year the religious group has taken aim at Lady GaGa, back in January, the congregation announced plans to stage a "God Hates Lady GaGa" protest at the singer's concert in St. Louis, Missouri and released a version of "Poker Face" with lyrics like, "You p**sed off God, you'll see what he's got.
