Inspired by the annual “Manga We Want To See Animated” ranking in Japan, a Twitter user conducted a similar poll to find the most desired manga adaptations among Western audiences.

Notably, titles already slated for anime production or those with existing adaptations were excluded from consideration.
Here are top 25 manga western fans are most eager to see animated:

It's been more than two decades since Naoki Urasawa started publishing a manga based on a story arc from Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy. Urasawa changed many details in his reinterpretation, but his new version of the story has been capturing the public imagination since its first issue in 2003.
Now the reinterpretation has been interpreted again – as an animated series. And it turns out, it's really, really good.
So What's The Story?
Pluto takes place in the aftermath of a massive war involving both humans and robots. Now the world is at peace, and thanks to new laws (and programming) it's been eight years since a robot has killed a human. Robots are also now granted equal rights.
When a powerful, famous, and beloved war hero robot is found destroyed, Europol robot detective Gesicht is sent to investigate. As the bodies start piling up, Gesicht realizes that he may be...

"The Fugitive" ran for four seasons on ABC from 1963 to 1967. The series followed Dr. Richard Kimble (David Janssen), a (you guessed it) fugitive accused of murdering his wife. Pursued across the country by lawman Philip Gerard (Barry Morse), he tries to prove his innocence by finding the real killer.
On one hand, "The Fugitive" is as episodic as you'd expect from a 1960s TV show. Each episode features Kimble in a different town with a new problem to solve. The backstory is also told via title sequence; the first episode, "Fear in a Desert City," is just another adventure for Kimble, not the murder, trial, and Kimble's escape the way it would be today. However, there's also some serialization with the story threads of Gerard hunting Kimble and Kimble hunting the real murderer, a one-armed man (Bill Raisch). These reach their conclusion in the finale, "The Judgment."
With such a simple and exciting premise,...

That flickering feeling of unease that seems to creep across oneself in the night; a suggestion of the evil that lies within humanity condensed into an experience. Naoki Urasawa's “Monster” captures just this sensation. Adapted by Madhouse and Masayuki Kojima twenty years ago, the story of the wronged doctor chasing down the devil-incarnate manages to stick in the memory of all those who have seen it. The manga was the grand prize winner of the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize in 1999 and its anime adaptation was equally acclaimed amongst fans and critics. Its unmistakable blend of horror and psychological crime thriller captivated audiences and left its mark in the cultural footprint of the anime industry.

Well, it's official — Netflix's live-action remake of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" paid off (for the company at least). Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier) will get to continue mastering the elements, now that "Avatar" has been renewed for seasons 2 and 3.
"Avatar" is just the latest anime that Netflix has brought to live-action. On this spectrum, "Avatar" falls below the well-received "One Piece" remake but ahead of the swiftly-canned live-action "Cowboy Bebop" (that even original series creator Shinichirō Watanabe couldn't finish).
Netflix hasn't stopped there. The streamer is letting "Stranger Things" creators the Duffer Brothers take a crack at "Death Note" and has had a live-action "Gundam" movie in development since 2021. Other studios are getting into anime properties as well: Lionsgate has recruited "Shang-Chi" director Destin Daniel Cretton to adapt "Naruto" into a live-action movie.

Listen, I love anime and the endless possibilities of the medium. Unfortunately, much like how Hollywood is mostly inundated by uncomplicated four-quadrant blockbusters that get tiring after a while, anime, too, is inundated with uncomplicated action-centric titles that cater to a mass audience. There's a reason the vast majority of anime shows are about teenagers, which is fine but it means that anytime a show comes out that deals with adult characters and mature themes it is worth paying attention to.
So imagine how thrilled I was to find out that there was an anime adaptation of a manga by the guy who gave us the anime equivalent of an HBO prestige drama — and it is based on a story by the man who created anime as we know it.
That anime is "Pluto.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made Bruce Banner/The Hulk into just one more of the Avengers. His most recent MCU appearances, "Avengers: Endgame" and "She-Hulk," have ditched the man and monster dichotomy altogether; the Hulk is now just a green and buff Bruce.
For all his personal faults, Joss Whedon was the last writer/director to explore the Hulk's tragedy in his two "Avengers" films. The nascent team's climactic argument in "The Avengers," when Banner silences the room by revealing he "got low, so he put a bullet in [his] mouth, and the other guy spit it out" has real dramatic gravitas.
However, the MCU has altogether elided where that tragedy begins. In the comics, Dr. Bruce Banner was already a troubled man before the gamma bomb explosion that changed his life. Banner's father Brian was a nuclear psychist convinced his own radiation exposure turned his son into a monster.

"Monster", directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, is one of the most acclaimed movies of 2023 that you probably haven't heard of yet.
Set in Japan, the film follows three people: the single mother Saori Mugino (Sakura Andō), her young son Minato (Sōya Kurokawa), and Minato's teacher Michitoshi Hori (Eita Nagayama). Saori begins to suspect that Hori is abusing her son, while Hori suspects that there's something sinister in the boy's head. The truth, which I'll leave unspoiled, is a lot sadder. The film is told from their three perspectives. Seeing the same sequence of events three times highlights how hard it is to truly understand someone by looking at them from the outside.
"Monster" enjoyed a film festival run, taking home the Queer Palm (bestowed to Kore-eda) and Best Screenplay (to Yuji Sakamoto) awards at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May...

Spoilers for "Attack on Titan" follow.
Despite all the twists along the way, the final arc of "Attack On Titan" returned to the initial premise (and threat) of the series: humanity face-to-face with extinction in the form of humanoid giants. These giants march across the Earth as "The Rumbling," flattening everything in their path underfoot. As our heroes fight to stop this onslaught in the series finale, the episode cuts to a crowd of people running from the advancing Titans.
Once they reach a sea cliff, many people start pouring over the side (a beat taken from Chapter 134 of Hajime Isayama's original manga). Then, the episode's animation team (led by directors Yuichiro Hayashi and Tokio Igarashi) makes a striking color choice. The scene goes black-and-white, except for a mother and her baby who retain their color. The mother eventually falls over the cliff but lifts her baby off to...

Lucca Comics & Games 2023 Fest Offers Something for Every Fan, From ‘Harry Potter’ to ‘Hunger Games’
After two pandemic years and a successful 2022 edition back in full swing, Lucca Comics & Games — Europe’s biggest geek meet, second in size globally only to Tokyo’s Comiket — is set to unspool again in the picturesque Tuscan town from Nov. 1-5. In the turbulent times of the SAG-AFTRA strike, the gathering will offer its 80,000 daily visitors a slew of movies, series, comics, games, video games, concerts and live events.
“We’re the only festival in the world having a red carpet and a large cinema-focused component that is not primarily a film festival. Lucca is a great hybrid event,” Lucca chief Emanuele Vietina tells Variety ahead of the event’s launch.
The big star of Day One will be Michel Gondry, who will attend the opening ceremony and host a masterclass covering his body of work, including his latest, “The Book of Solutions.”

One of the most notable criteria that establishes a work of art as classic in the true sense of the term is its lasting relevance through different periods of time, which can also be achieved by the scope of reinterpretation provided by the creator as well. Known as the “Father of Manga,” Osamu Tezuka’s masterpiece Astro Boy has proven to be such a piece of art that retains a timeless essence at its core—something that has inspired artists for the last sixty years. The story of Atom, a superpowered android kid whose humanity is his greatest asset, captivated fans of all ages, but most importantly, another legendary mangaka, Naoki Urasawa.
As they say, greatness inspires greatness, Urasawa decided to put his own grim-dark, mystery spin into retelling the most significant story arc of Astro Boy, known as ‘The Greatest Robot on Earth’—and thus, Pluto was created. A tale,...

Osamu Tezuka's "Astro Boy" birthed manga, and in turn, anime, as we know these mediums today. Manga author Naoki Urasawa has said that the "Astro Boy" arc "The Greatest Robot on Earth" was the first comic he ever read. Enter "Pluto," Urasawa's reimagining of that story, now adapted itself into an anime mini-series distributed by Netflix.
I'm only tangentially familiar with Tezuka's original manga, essentially a sci-fi "Pinocchio." In a futuristic world where robots are commonplace, young Tobio Tenma dies in a car crash. So, his scientist father creates a robotic replicant of his son. The result is the android superhero Astro Boy. "Pluto" fills in the basics of this backstory but doesn't dwell on them, for "Atom" is just one player in a larger story.

Aside from shounen, horror, and mech-oriented sci-fi elements, the mainstream anime scene is heavily populated with ventures revolving around the detective mystery genre. For the 90s kids, fond memories of the Detective Conan series still linger at the back of their minds, and the title itself is indicative enough of the influence Sherlock Holmes and his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had on the series. As we went through the recently released anime adaptation of Akira Amano’s Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deduction, the influence was felt even more strongly, and without spoiling the future plotline, it can be said that readers who are familiar with the manga must know that the influence goes far beyond the narrative style and plot structure. Revolving around an unlikely duo of detectives, the series adds a particular supernatural spin to conventional investigations, which will remind the viewers of Naoki Urasawa’s masterpiece, Monster.

Osamu Tezuka is often mentioned along with the title of “Father of Manga” and in many ways, he is, thanks to the prolific nature of his works and the fact that he managed to walk the perfect line between entertainment for kids and profound storytelling that took the medium of manga to an entirely new era. Characters like Astro Boy, Kimba, the White Lion, and Black Jack are still present in the audience’s minds even after so long, and thus the influence of Tezuka cannot be understated. Pluto is a new anime series based on the Astro Boy Universe, and Netflix has released the first official teaser for it.
Pluto is based on a manga of the same name written and illustrated not by Tezuka, who sadly passed away at the age of 60 in 1989, but by Naoki Urasawa, a more contemporary manga artist that has acquired an amazing reputation...

Lucca Comics & Games, Europe’s number one comic and gaming convention, kicked off the 2023 season on Thursday with the launch of the poster and festival trailer for this year’s event. The 57th Lucca festival will be held in the picturesque Italian medieval city Nov. 1-5.
This 2023 festival theme, Together, and rainbow color additions to the Lucca logo, emphasizes organizers’ focus on diversity and inclusion for this year’s edition.
The 2023 poster was designed by Israeli artists, and twin brothers, cartoonist Asaf Hanuka and The New Yorker illustrator Tomer Hanuka. The brothers develped the concept art for Air Folman’s 2008 Oscar-nominated animated documentary Waltz With Bashir, and have collaborated on several graphic novels together, including Boaz Lavie’s The Divine.
Their design for the Lucca poster mashes up Western and Eastern traditions, with an oriental dragon descending from the sky over Lucca’s historic city.

What comes to mind when you think of prestige TV dramas? Is it '80s cop shows like "Hill Street Blues" or gritty anti-hero tales like "Breaking Bad" and "The Sopranos"? What about gripping thrillers like "Broen," or "Broadchurch" or even recent genre fare like "Hannibal" and "Game of Thrones"? We tend to associate this concept, regardless of country of origin or language, or even genre, with live-action.
To be fair, as varied and as popular as anime is, it is true that the vast majority of the big-name anime shows airing season to season are mostly genre shows aimed at teenage boys — not unlike how the biggest movies are genre movies also aimed at teenage boys. Adapting manga/anime to live-action almost always feels like a fool's errand. Many have tried, few have succeeded, many more don't even make it to the big screen. One adaptation cast into development hell several times is Naoki Urasawa's thriller "Monster."
"Monster" begins in Germany during 1986, shortly before East/West reunification. Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a Japanese immigrant, is a top neurosurgeon in Düsseldorf. Humble and good-hearted, the doctor actually cares about his patients' well-being, not just money and prestige. Ordered by Hospital Director Heinemann to let 10-year-old orphan Johan Liebert die and save a local politician instead, Tenma disobeys. He saves the boy, but it costs him his engagement (to Heinemann's venal daughter Eva) and his professional future. That is, until Heinemann is poisoned while Johan disappears.
In 1995, Tenma learns Johan grew up to be a prolific serial killer; he killed his adoptive parents, Heinemann, and many more since.

Folks! It is finally happening. One of the best anime shows ever made, as well as the one good adaptation of one of the greatest manga of all time, is finally coming to streaming.
At a time when availability is becoming an important issue in media as big corporations are erasing entire titles from existence with the push of a button, concepts like piracy as historical preservation are being discussed in a new light, even by creators. If there is literally no legal way to watch a show, should you pirate it? Does it hurt a show when, after years of unavailability and bootlegging, it finally becomes available? "Neon Genesis Evangelion" was a hit on Netflix when it finally became available to stream and got everyone talking about it for the first time in years.
Thankfully, we don't have to debate this any longer, at least not when it comes...

Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues” video is getting a new spin from Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith and more artists to mark the greatest songwriter of all time’s 60th anniversary as a recording artist.
The new video takes its inspiration from the opening scene from D.A. Pennebaker’s 1967 documentary Don’t Look Back, which chronicled Dylan’s 1965 tour in England. It opens on Dylan holding and discarding a series of handwritten cue cards displaying words from the lyrics to “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” and they include humorous misspellings, jokes and puns.

Over the last several years, major Japanese studios have started to follow the tactics of their Hollywood equivalents by finally adapting their own comics, called manga, in the way they deserve.
This tendency is not exactly new, since films based on manga/anime have been shot since the 70s. However, it is the first time that so many expensive and subsequently elaborate productions are being made. This is chiefly attributed to two factors:
1.The people behind those films finally realized that they could not squeeze eight or more hours of anime in a single film, and thus decided to present the movie in two or three parts, retaining much of the original’s story and themes.
2.They also realized since most of the titles are sci-fi themed, much of the budget should be allocated towards the special effects, in order for the adaptation to capture the images of the original.

The character of Astro Boy may be heading to New Line Cinema, THR is reporting. What's more is that the company has tapped San Andreas writers Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore to write a live-action version of the script. While the manga and anime series was definitely aimed more towards kids back when it came out decades ago, this film will be created as a four-quadrant adventure film, meaning it'll be reworked to appeal to all ages, young and old. As such, they are likely to give the series more an of edgy tone than its creator originally intended, perhaps in the vein of a Transformers and G.I. Joe.
While you may not recognize the character name, chances are you recognize the look of the character himself. Created by legendary manga artist Osamu Tezuka--who was heavily influenced by Walt Disney--Astro Boy definitely has the look of an old-school Disney character.

Hopefully del Toro gets this one done. Speaking at the fourth annual Hero Complex Film Festival, Guillermo spoke about his approach to the adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's Monster. Frank Grillo tweeted that he's in Cleveland for filming of Captain America: The Winter Soldier so his costume is probably the next we'll be viewing via set photos. Flying to Cleveland tonight to wreak some havoc. #Rumlow— frank grillo (@FrankGrillo) May 27, 2013 Dave Bautista is currently on the other side of the pond in London and he's met up with his Guardians of the Galaxy leader Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord, played by Chris Pratt. Apparently Pratt is 'more jacked' than 'The Animal.' Feeling a little self conscious today.. @prattprattpratt is more jacked than I am!!! Wtf!!! #thunderstealer— Dave Bautista (@DaveBautista) May 29, 2013 Unfortunately, there wasn't a new episode of HBO's Game of Thrones last month but there will be a...

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend screenings of Guillermo del Toro's The Devi's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth. The director was in attendance to do a Q&A in-between the films. During the Q&A, he discussed his career, the things that inspired him to make his movies, his interest in the occult, some real life ghost stories, and also talked about a couple of projects he's trying to get off the ground such as his Justice League Dark film Heaven Sent, as well as his HBO series Monster. It's always entertaining listening to Del Toro talk about his life, career, and films. I recorded the whole thing for you to check out.
During the event, they also showed an incredibly badass new trailer for Pacific Rim that is sure to hit the internet in the near future. It was packed full of some cool new footage that you're sure to love!

Guillermo del Toro has been offering an update on his planned Justice League Dark project...
Guillermo del Toro was at the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex Festival on Saturday, and while he was there he provided an update on his Justice League Dark movie.
He revealed that the script has the team consisting of Constantine, Swamp Thing, Madame Xanadu, Deadman and Zantanna. He also said that there would be other characters in there, basically “everybody that doesn't feel like a repeat”, but didn't go into specifics as he wanted to avoid spoilers for the film.
He also mentioned that he has yet to receive the go ahead from Warner Brothers, “if they (Warner Brothers) like the script, I'll do it; if not...”. In theory, this could be another project of del Toro's that falls by the wayside, although we dearly hope not. If this...

Guillermo del Toro is one of my favorite directors because he knows how to tell gripping, human stories in worlds filled with monsters. Just look at his Hellboy movies or Pan’s Labyrinth: both revolve around monsters, but they aren’t horror movies in the strictest sense of the genre. He likes to frighten people, but that isn’t his only goal. They all explore humanity through the use of other worldly creatures. His next project, which is teaming him up with HBO, will take that exploration to a new level as he explores the monsters inside man. Mr. del Toro, you have my complete attention.
Del Toro and HBO are developing Monster, based on the 18-volume Japanese Manga series authored by Naoki Urasawa and published by Shogakukan. According to Deadline, del Toro will co-write the story with Steven Thompson, with Thompson penning the pilot and del Toro looking to direct.
