This article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of What We Do in the Shadows season 5.
After the arsonist’s inferno, neglected fire insurance premiums, and financial ruin which befell Nadja’s (Natasia Demetriou) vampire club last season, and the final growth spurt which marked the return of the once and future energy sucker Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), What We Do in the Shadows season 5 returns to bloody basics. The opening double-header episodes, “The Mall” and “A Night Out with the Guys,” lean into Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s original 2014 comic creature feature film by putting the supernatural immortals in mundane modern settings, and newly adopted olde world recreations.
“We want to be seen interacting with something like trams, trains, and all sorts of different things,” Kayvan Novak, who plays the ancient vampire warlord Nandor the Relentless, tells Den of Geek. “For an audience, that’s always exciting to see.

[This story contains spoilers from Netflix’s Murder Mystery 2.]
Adam Sandler has just expanded his coterie of comedic filmmakers with Murder Mystery 2.
The new Netflix action comedy is a follow-up to the 2019 Kyle Newacheck-directed film, with this one counting Jeremy Garelick at the helm. Sandler and Jennifer Aniston reprise their roles as Nick and Audrey Spitz, now working as private detectives, who find themselves embroiled in a case that leads them to Paris after their friend, the Maharajah (Adeel Akhtar), is kidnapped at his own wedding. Mark Strong, Mélanie Laurent and Jodie Turner-Smith also star in the sequel that debuted in the top spot on the streamer’s English-films list.
Garelick directed such films as 2015’s The Wedding Ringer, an early starring vehicle for Kevin Hart, and 2020 teen comedy The Binge, but Murder Mystery 2 definitely includes his biggest action set pieces yet, which makes sense when a movie involves someone getting...

The first “Murder Mystery” from 2019, written by James Vanderbilt (“Zodiac”), was a fun star-studded throwback to the 1980s Agatha Christie films like 1982’s “Evil Under the Sun,” with salt of the earth Brooklynites Nick and Audrey Spitz (Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston) thrown into the mix. The script was a smart, genre-savvy affair coupled with Sandler-style lowbrow comedy, a combination that almost worked, but was undone by the lackluster direction by Kyle Newacheck.

Plot: Now full-time detectives struggling to get their private eye agency off the ground, Nick and Audrey Spitz find themselves at the center of an international abduction when their friend the Maharaja is kidnapped at his own lavish wedding.
Review: There are two types of Adam Sandler movies: good ones and the ones he makes for Netflix. Since signing a massive deal with the streaming platform in 2014, Sandler has made eight films of varying quality, with all but two being lambasted by critics. Looked at by many as expensive vacations for Sandler and his friends, most of these comedies are nothing more than filler for Netflix to pad their library of original productions. When Murder Mystery premiered in 2019, the reunion of Jennifer Aniston and Sandler was a critical dud, but fans loved the blend of action and mystery. Before we get to the "Murder Mystery 2" trailer, can we talk about Adam Sandler's career real quick? The popular actor simply owned the 1990s with a string of hilarious hits like "Billy Madison," "Happy Gilmore," and "The Wedding Singer," but a funny thing happened on the way to establishing himself as the go-to comedy leading man. A director by the name of Paul Thomas Anderson approached him for this little movie called "Punch-Drunk Love" in 2002, casting him entirely against type and giving him a career-best role that allowed audiences to see that he offered so much more than what they'd gotten used to. Of course, he'd follow that up with about a dozen more movies that we'd expect from him ... that is, until he enjoyed a bit of a renaissance period between "Sandy Wexler," "The Meyerowitz Stories," and especially the Safdie brothers anxiety-inducing "Uncut Gems."
Well, Sandler's back...

Can a friendship survive anything? Two friends are about to test the limits in “I’m Totally Fine.” The film may start with a central character’s journey through loss, but it quickly establishes itself as a quirky comedy. Actor and producer Kyle Newacheck spoke about the influences surrounding the project — namely, its connections to powerlessness during a raging pandemic. “We were making a movie that mirrored what we had all collectively been experiencing over 2020, without being literal,” he told Deadline.

"Do you consent to testing?" Decal Releasing has revealed an official trailer for a funky sci-fi indie comedy titled I'm Totally Fine, made by filmmaker Brandon Dermer. It will be available to watch on VOD starting in November. Jillian Bell stars as Vanessa, a young woman who embarks on a solo trip to clear her head after the death of her best friend Jennifer. Her self-care vacation takes a detour when she finds the recently departed Jennifer standing in her kitchen, claiming to be an extraterrestrial. Together they spend the next 48 hours partying and reminiscing on better days in a comedy that's out of this world. The film also stars Natalie Morales, Blake Anderson, Harvey Guillén, and Kyle Newacheck. The filmmakers explain the idea behind it: "the metaphor of it is 2020 and being powerless – all of a sudden everything got taken away from us as we knew it, everything changed.

In any given week, the FX vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows is so explosively funny that it almost feels like every other TV comedy should give up and consider a new career in accordion sales. Some weeks, though, Shadows is even funnier than that. The latest episode, “The Grand Opening,” is one of those special examples. It is not a format-breaking installment like that one that introduced regular human bartender Jackie Daytona, but rather an episode where all three subplots fully exploit the comic potential of the...

“What We Do in the Shadows” has never been afraid to get weird.
The FX comedy, based on the film by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, returned Tuesday for its fourth season, with Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasha Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry) and Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) reunited at their Staten Island mansion. A year after the Season 3 finale, the vampires and their familiar are going in new directions. Nandor searches for a wife, Guillermo is determined to put himself first, and Nadja focuses her efforts on raising money to repair the crumbling house.
“We wanted them all to have gone off on their journeys and done things without each other,” showrunner Paul Simms said about the decision to jump forward one year. “There was some discussion of starting the season with them all off in their different places, but it’s so much more fun when they’re all with each other.

Saara Chaudry and Anders Holm have joined the cast of the Disney+ live-action series The Muppets Mayhem.
Chaudry will star as series regular Hannah, Nora’s (Lilly Singh) younger and arguably more accomplished sister. Raised in the era of likes, shares, and the idea that “if it wasn’t posted, it didn’t happen,” Hannah translated her e-acumen and talent for enthusiastic and aspirational make-up videos into a burgeoning social media empire, complete with a legion of “Fan-a-Hannahs.” Her success has unfortunately upended her dynamic with Nora.
Holm was cast as recurring guest star JJ, a formerly sheepish, nerdy intern-turned uber-cool, tech entrepreneur who happens to be Nora’s ex. On the surface, his ambition knows no bounds, but the real JJ underneath still hopes to win her back.

New Netflix action movie The Old Guard continues to ride a wave of success. It’s only been out for a week, but the Charlize Theron flick is already hitting several benchmarks. It topped Netflix’s Top 10 chart after only 48 hours and now the streaming platform is reporting that it’s on track to be seen by 72 million accounts in its first four weeks of release.
Of course, take any announcement by a successful company with a grain of salt. Netflix is notoriously secretive about sharing ratings figures and when they do, we don’t have much context for the numbers. Having said that, there are a few other notable Netflix movies to compare The Old Guard to. The Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston comedy Murder Mystery was seen by 31 million accounts in its first two days of release, for instance. Not bad considering that Sandler’s theatrical prowess has taken a hit in recent memory.

Netflix has posted on social media that the Charlize Theron Gina Prince-Bythewood Skydance movie The Old Guard could easily become one of the streamer’s top 10 original movies. With no small amount of fortune-telling, the streamer is estimating that the pic will be seen by 72M households withing four weeks.
Should those numbers bear out, Prince-Bythewood will become the first Black female director on that list.
The movie, based on Greg Rucka’s graphic novel, who also wrote the screenplay, follows a covert team of immortal mercenaries who are suddenly exposed and must fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered.
Theron, who also produced the movie, teased about a sequel on Seth Meyers recently, saying, “There’s obviously a relationship there (between Van Veronica Ngo’s Quynh and Theron’s Andy) that we didn’t really explore in this film…so I...

In the 15 years since he first garnered fame as snarky warehouse foreman Daryl Philbin on “The Office,” Craig Robinson has solidified into the kind of deadpan talent whose very presence serves as an instant punchline. “I crave the silly stuff,” he said in a phone interview this week, tied to his guest appearance on “What We Do in the Shadows,” which he described as an opportunity “to act serious about the dumbest things.”
That much comes through with his two-episode arc, starting with Episode 3, “Brain Scrambles.” Robinson embodies Derek, the stone-faced leader of a ragtag vampire-hunting group disguised as a mosquito fan club on Staten Island. Derek’s appearance plays a key role in enabling a major character to enter new terrain: Weak-kneed familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillen) has been struggling with his own impulses after discovering that he’s a descendent of vampire killer Van Helsing, and while scouring the...

Lighting was a key part of the second season of Jemaine Clement’s mockumentary series “What We Do in the Shadows,” about a pack of vampires on Staten Island, which returned April 15 via FX, and airs on Hulu the following day.
Cinematographer D.J. Stipsen shot most of the show’s first season as well as the 2014 film on which the series is based. He knew that the second episode of Season 2, which features a ghost infestation in which the spirits have a glowing, spectral appearance, would require additional illumination. By chance, CG supervisor Leo Bovell had stumbled across a behind-the-scenes photo from “Ghostbusters” of an actor wearing an Led suit, which led to the use of Astera lighting tubes that were sewn into the costumes and easily controlled by board operators to provide the effects required.
The Astera tubes came in particularly handy in Episode 3 as well, when the vampire...

‘Murder Mystery’ (Photo credit: Netflix).
While Australians might like to think their tastes in movies and TV shows often are markedly different to Americans, that isn’t true when it comes to the most watched shows on Netflix.
There is a high degree of overlap between the two countries in the lists of the most popular titles of 2019 released by the streamer last week.
Murder Mystery, the feature comedy starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston was the top show while Michael Bay’s 6 Underground, an action thriller starring Ryan Reynolds, ranked second in Australia and third in the Us.
Stranger Things 3, The Irishman, The Witcher, Triple Frontier and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile also figured among the top 10 in both.
Netflix’s The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann, a true-crime series directed by Chris Smith, was the most popular documentary in Australia, resonating more strongly here than in the...
