Mexican producer-director Iria Gómez Concheiro is unveiling at Guadalajara “Here Be Dragons,” a co-production between her own label Ciudad Cinema – alongside exec producer Rodrigo Ríos Legaspi – and Colombia’s Trilce Cinema, with Alejandro Rey and Claudia Sánchez.
Set in a vaguely anachronistic 2040, “Here Be Dragons” is a sci-fi drama-adventure movie which follows 18-year old Candelaria as she tries to survive an uncertain, devastated country where sinister military forces rule.
Fearing an imminent barbaric invasion, Candelaria flees from her father and a chaotic, brutal regime, while undertaking an initiatory trip to unveil the truth about love and this menace. The title refers to the Latin inscription “hic sunt dracones” (dragons are here) used on old navigational maps to signal unexplored or dangerous areas.
Project “Here Be Dragons” wil be prsented at the Guadalajara Festival Co-Production Meetings from Sunday.

Since 1993’s Cronos, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro quickly became synonymous with horror hailing from Mexico. More recent releases like Issa Lopez‘s Tigers Are Not Afraid, Emilio Portes‘s Belzebuth, and even Gigi Saul Guerrero‘s Culture Shock indicate an emerging new class of talented genre contemporaries. While that’s exciting for horror’s future, there’s already a vast, rich history of Mexican […]...

American character actor Tobin Bell is, of course, a true horror star after appearing throughout the entire Saw franchise as the antagonist John Kramer, aka Jigsaw. More recently, Bell has worked on other movies of this genre, including the Mexican production Belzebuth, directed by Emilio Portes, and The Call, which just hit theaters and drive-ins in the US last Friday, October 2. Directed by Timothy Woodward Jr., The Call follows a group of teenagers who hold a grudge against an old lady, Edith Cranston (Lin Shaye), who’s apparently a witch and the unpunished responsible party for the disappearance years ago of a local girl, the sister of one of the teen protagonists. The new kid on the block, Chris (Chester Rushing), soon joins the “tradition”...

After enjoying a great run on Shudder the last few months, Emilio Portes’ Belzebuth is headed to Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD this week, courtesy of Rlje Films. The story is centered around a mysterious string of grisly murders in Mexico which have left Detective Ritter (Joaquín Cosio) utterly baffled as to what is going on. But when an operative of the Vatican shows up (played by Tobin Bell), it’s clear that the ultimate battle of good versus evil is afoot, with Ritter, and his family, squarely in the middle of everything.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with genre favorite Tobin Bell about his experiences working on Belzebuth, and he discussed the film’s messaging, the extensive body tattoos he had to don in order to become his character, his experiences working in Mexico on the film, and more.

Almost five years after the (failed) comedy El crimen del Cácaro Gumaro, Mexican filmmaker Emilio Portes returns to the big screen with Belzebuth, a film that, unlike his previous work, soon reveals itself as something completely serious. Not for nothing the violently effective sequence that introduces the protagonist, a border police detective named Ritter (played by Joaquín Cosio) as he faces the "sweetest taboo" (a term that not long ago Fantastic Fest used for a compilation on the same subject ): child murder, showing without mercy a group of newborn babies -- Ritter and his wife's baby among them -- being victims of a nurse who ends up committing suicide. The killings of infants and other types of attacks will be repeated in different places...

The first teaser trailer for a new indie horror film called Belzebuth has been released and it looks like it’s going to be quite a wild horrific experience. The trailer does a great job of setting up the creepy nightmarish tone.
The story is set on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, and the it follows special agent Emanuel Ritter (Joaquín Cosio) “as he leads a police investigation into a series of mysterious deaths involving young children at the border of Mexico and U.S.A. The case takes a supernatural turn when a priest (Tobin Bell) from the Vatican links the ancient demon Belzebuth to the murders.”

"The Pope himself asked us to look into cases..." Raven Banner has released an official promo trailer for the indie horror film Belzebuth, the latest film from Mexican director Emilio Portes. Set on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, the film is about a Detective investigating the deaths of young children at the border. What seems like a clear case becomes much more intense when a priest of the Vatican appears with another point of view. Tobin Bell (from the Saw series) plays that priest, sporting a pretty gnarly beard along with markings all over his body. Belzebuth also stars Joaquín Cosio, Aida López, Tate Ellington, Giovanna Zacarías, Norma Angélica, Jose Sefami, Yunuen Pardo. This is a freaky trailer and it does a good job of selling this, but I want to see more of what's really going on. Here's the first promo trailer (+ poster) for Emilio Portes' Belzebuth,...

Tagline: "Don't Stop Playing." Belzebuth will be seeing more screens as Raven Banner picks up international rights. This film, from director Emilio Portes, involves a series of strange deaths, involving children. When detectives investigate, a supernatural element makes itself known. Belzebuth stars: Joaquin Cosio ("The Strain"), Tobin Bell (Saw), Tate Ellington (Sinister 2) and several others. Recently, Belzebuth had a showing in Belgium, at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. A preview of the film's wider release is hosted here. A new poster has been revealed for Belzebuth. The graphic shows a number of upside down crosses and a baby carriage, in deep reds. The graphic offers two taglines: "Don't Stop Praying" and "Evil is About to Be Born." Some of that evil can be seen in the film's first trailer, which is hosted below. As well, Belzebuth was shot in both English and Spanish. Filmed on the Baja Peninsula,...

There are some places you should just never go back to. That seems to be the general point of Rigorberto Castaneda's upcoming Km 31 2. The sequel to Castaneda's hit Mexican horror returns to the scene of the first film - a fateful and very, very haunted mile marker along a dangerous stretch of remote highway - and the results look absolutely horrifying. Though Mexico has a long history and tradition of horror film that tradition had been largely abandoned by recent generations until Castaneda emerged on the scene as the first of a fresh wave of Mexican genre voices that now also includes Jorge Michel Grau, Emilio Portes and Argentinean transplant Adrian Garcia Bogliano. Castaneda is by far the slickest and most commercially minded...

While there's always been a certain darkness to the films of Mexico's Emilio Portes - winner of a fistful of Mexican academy awards for his Alex de la Iglesia styled action horror comedy Pastorela - that darkness has always been balanced out against a certain playfulness. But not this time. Not when you're dealing with the story of renegade priests and the slaughter of innocent children to clear a path for the arrival of the antichrist. Portes' next will be the very serious minded horror effort Belzebuth, a film that clearly has plans to expand Portes' international audience playing out in a blend of English and Spanish as the fight against the devil spans both sides of the border while pulling in a bearded -...

Holy cow. Pastorela's Emilio Portes goes against Cannes winner Carlos Reygadas (Silent Light, specifically) and "artsy" slow cinema in the final trailer for El Crimen del Cácaro Gumaro, the upcoming Mexican comedy that will most likely be a commercial success. But if the trailer is to be believed, Portes is about to face a massive critical failure. In El Crimen del Cácaro Gumaro (the title is, by the way, an obvious joke on The Crime of Father Amaro), a projectionist dies and one of his sons (Gumaro, played by Carlos Corona) inherits the old movie theater in a small town. With the help of the municipal president (played by famous Mexican television comedian Andrés Bustamante), Gumaro will eventually host an international film festival with movies of...

29 more days to go until Fantastic Fest 2011 takes over Austin Texas! I cannot wait. 17 more films were announced late last week. Only one of those 17 films was on our “Film Guestimation” list for Fantastic Fest 2011. Anyway, beyond the break, you can check out what is playing.
Apparently, more films will be announced this week. We will try to get those out as soon as we hear about it.
