Comic conventions tend to be a thing you look forward to every year, like Popeyes chicken half-off day (actually a real thing) and Justin Timberlake's yearly SNL appearance. While every person is different in their motivations for going to a con, mine skew towards discovering new art and seeing great cosplay. Of course, my Pop figure hunt for Groot was also a priority. Alas, I did not succeed on that front, but no reason to be a downer. Here is my day at Wizard World Nashville in a nutshell.
Funkos Abound!
When I say I was searching for Groot, I wasn’t kidding. I walked around that floor at least 6 or 7 times over, just hoping to catch a glimpse of the ancient tree god, yet somehow came up empty. If it's two things we love, it's Joss Whedon and pop culture-inspired artwork. So the fact that Los Angeles' Gallery 1988, home to some of the very best pop culture artwork on the planet, is hosting a show devoted entirely to the creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly," "Dollhouse," "Cabin in the Woods" and "The Avengers" (amongst many others) and well, it's almost too good.
The show runs from tonight until September 27th, and you can pick up artwork from the show online starting midday tomorrow. If you're in La and don't have any plans, the opening ceremony, going on from 7 to 10 tonight, is undoubtedly worth your time. Plus you get first dibs on buying stuff, which is always very cool. Check out a selection of the available artwork below. Which one will you be taking home?
