When Quentin Tarantino first announced he was working on a "men on a mission" World War II movie called "Inglorious Bastards" (no one knew he would intentionally misspell the title at the time), the internet went into fan casting overdrive. What would a 2000s version of Robert Aldrich's "The Dirty Dozen" directed by Tarantino look like? Is Bruce Willis in the Lee Marvin role? Robert Forster as Robert Ryan? Some athlete-turned-actor (Mike Tyson?) taking up Jim Brown's mantle?
As we've learned is often the case with Tarantino, the vaguely pitched project never lands anywhere close to fan expectations. Once the two-time Academy Award winner sits down to bang out the screenplay, it takes on a convention-bending life of its own. Tarantino may adore "The Dirty Dozen", but there will be no fan service. You're not going to get what you want.
Nor will Tarantino. At least not when...

"The League" doesn't need to chase down NFL stars for cameo appearances anymore. The players -- more specifically their agents -- are now reaching out to the show, according to executive producer Jeff Schaffer. That said, they're being mindful not oversaturate the program with cameos -- a la "Entourage." And it's not just limited to football anymore. Baseball player Kevin Youkilis, currently of the New York Yankees, approached the cast and producers recently to talk about what a fan he is. The Los Angeles Kings even spent some time with the cast...

It's a special baseball Opening Day installment of the Firewall & Iceberg Podcast, in which we attempt to stay focused even as I watched Dan's Red Sox lay a thumping on my Yankees. In between the shellacking and both of our mixed emotions about Kevin Youkilis, we attempted to review "Mad Men" without arousing the wrath of Matt Weiner, discussed our love of NBC's "Hannibal" and our dislike of ABC's "How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life)" and DirecTV's "Rogue" (which very quickly spun off into a larger discussion of the Is There Too Much TV To Watch ? question), the "Walking Dead" finale, and...

When I read Michael Lewis' book Moneyball back in 2003, the idea that a movie could be made never crossed my mind. The reality of the situation - A's general manager Billy Beane changing the game of baseball - was being played out in reality. Players like Nick Swisher and Kevin Youkilis, whom the book was about, were playing for real and that was proof enough for me. But now, the changes in strategy that Beane and his team implemented are proven practice and it seems right to go back to where it all began. Moneyball, starring Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman, opens September 23 and the more I see from it - this new UK trailer for example - makes me realize, even though it wasn't my first instinct, this was born to be a movie. Check it out after the jump. Thanks to Collider [1] for the heads up to this MSN [2] link.

The trailers are starting to make the rounds for the digested, regurgitated and over-incubated adaptation of Michael Lewis' best-selling baseball novel, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. Brad Pitt pushed for a film version of the novel, which highlights the change in direction of the Oakland Athletics under General Manager Billy Beane. The San Francisco Bay Area franchise was one of the highest spending clubs in the early parts of the 90s, but after owner Walter Haas died in 1995, the new ownership group slashed payroll and cut operating costs (apparently this sort of behavior isn't limited to the New York Knights or Charlie Sheen's Cleveland Indians).
Beane's strategies expanded upon statistical analysis with objective studies and regressions analysis and all sorts of mathematical approaches, embracing the field of "Sabermetrics". By developing a different idea about how baseball games were won, and a different idea about which...

Yadda yadda yadda,” “Shrinkage,” “They’re real – and they’re spectacular.” Peter Mehlman, the writer-producer who penned those famous lines on the TV sitcom classic Seinfeld has moved beyond television and brought his unique sense of humor to the web. “Not that there’s anything wrong with that.” (Okay, that one was written by Larry Charles, but you get the point) Peter Mehlman’s Narrow World of Sports is produced by BermanBraun, the production company run by former TV executives Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun. It can be found exclusively on YouTube and is sponsored by Palm, which receives one or two unobtrusive product placements in the intro and outro segments that wrap around each interview. In fact, they are usually pretty funny and play right into the style of the show. Turning his attention from the realm of self-centered New Yorkers to the realm of sports, Mehlman’s first...

Mitchell Layton/Getty It’s a boy for Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia and wife Kelli!
Following a scary bout with preterm labor last month, Kelli delivered son Dylan Pedroia on Tuesday, August 18th. Baby boy — the first for the couple — weighed in at 7 pounds, and Dustin was able to be present for the birth after hopping a last-minute flight to Boston.
Dustin’s teammate Kevin Youkilis was quick to voice his congratulations. “I think it’s a great thing after all she’s been through and Dustin’s been through, mentally,” the Red Sox first baseman said. “We always joke about dad strength, so hopefully he comes back and keeps hitting home runs. It’ll be a great thing for him.”
While manager Terry Francona is no doubt also hoping that the newest member of Red Sox Nation will translate into increased production from Dustin, he said...

Finally, someone in Hollywood has recognized the awesome dramatic potential of watching men calculate on-base-plus-slugging percentages and ponder the trade value of Kevin Youkilis. Variety reports that Brad Pitt has signed on to star in a big screen adaptation of Moneyball, Michael Lewis' best-selling account of how Oakland A's General Manager Billy Beane changed the baseball world with his revolutionary approach to evaluating prospects. Despite a severely limited budget, Beane was repeatedly able to assemble winning teams by employing a method known as "sabermetrics" to identify undervalued players.
Pitt will be playing Beane. As for his potential co-stars, some suggestions:
Hall of Fame journalist Peter Gammons: veteran character actor Donald Sutherland
Ex-Dodgers G.M. Paul DePodesta: National Treasure star Justin Bartha
Yankees Slugger Jason Giambi: Irish badboy Colin Farrell
Blue Jays G.M. J.P. Ricciardi: Sopranos star Michael Imperioli
Red Sox star Kevin Youkilis: Yukon Cornelius...
