The highest-ranked TV shows of 2023 on the popular review site RottenTomatoes.com span multiple genres. Not surprisingly, there are two crime shows with this distinction, both fronted by formidable female cops. The final season of the gripping Happy Valley (AMC+) centers on British Sgt. Catherine Cawood (a powerful Sarah Lancashire), while dark comedy Deadloch (Prime Video) shows bickering partners solving murders in a quirky Tasmanian town. Then there’s a trio of coming-of-age stories: The irresistible Reservation Dogs (Hulu) depicts the blossoming of four Native American teens on an Oklahoma reservation; Primo (Freevee) is about ambitious Mexican American teen Rafa (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio) and his unique family; and comedy The Other Two (Max) shows the struggle of millennial sibs (Heléne Yorke and Drew Tarver) when their baby brother (Case Walker) attains overnight fame. The only sci-fi winner: Foundation (Apple TV+), based on Isaac Asimov’s iconic trilogy about warring empires. Tasty...

By now, the beats of an aspiring-musician saga are as familiar as those of a fairy tale. There’s the hungry young artist who seems marked for stardom long before the rest of the world has caught on. There’s the crappy starter apartment, and the glitzy industry parties, and the boardroom meetings with labels who don’t quite get it. There’s the moment when the hero hears his own song on the radio, and the moment when he caves to the temptations of fame, and the moment he’s made to decide to be true to himself.
Sometimes, in the darker iterations of this story, there’s also the spectacular crash after the meteoric rise; in the more thoughtful or incisive versions, there might be conversations about the limitations of his art or the compromises it demands or its impact on the world. But Neon is not that tale.

Former San Antonio Spurs guard Josh Primo, whom an NBA investigation found “engaged in inappropriate and offensive behavior by exposing himself to women,” will sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, ESPN reports.
Primo was suspended four games without pay by the NBA for his actions. The 20-year-old was drafted by the Spurs with the No. 12 pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He was waived last year in late October after reports of multiple incidents of exposing himself to women.
After his release, Primo told ESPN in a statement that he was struggling with his mental health and had been seeking help. He has since been in therapy that will continue in L.A.
“The NBA announced today that Joshua Primo has been suspended four games without pay for conduct detrimental to the league,” the league said Friday in a statement. “The league conducted its own investigation and consulted with relevant experts.

2021 was unquestionably the Summer of Cena, as John Cena appeared in "Fast 9," "The Suicide Squad," and the truly delightful "Vacation Friends." The latter was, in this writer's opinion, the first comedy film since "Blockers" that truly knew how to play to Cena's comedic strengths as a leading man, and pairing him alongside Lil Rel Howery ("Get Out'), Yvonne Orji ("Insecure"), and Meredith Hagner ("Search Party") was a recipe for comedy gold. The film was a huge hit on Hulu, snagging a sequel greenlight less than a month after its debut on the Disney-owned streamer. Less than two years later, the foursome is back for "Vacation Friends 2," reuniting with writer-director Clay Tarver in the process.
The sequel picks up a few months after the first film, which saw Ron (Cena) and a pregnant Kyla (Hagner) finally tying the knot, doing so with their new friends Marcus (Howery) and Emily (Orji) by their side.

Ignacio Diaz-Silverio wasn’t necessarily expecting that his first significant job as actor would find him starring in a comedy series, a daunting task for an unknown who is barely old enough to drink. But that’s the prospect that the Tampa, Florida-born Diaz-Silverio found himself in after landing the job to front “Primo,” an eight-episode sitcom on Amazon Freevee that casts him as Rafa Gonzales, a 16-year-old high school junior who carries the hopes and dreams of his extended Latinx family in San Antonio, Texas – and the son of his tough-but-tender mother Drea (played by Christina Vidal). “I didn’t feel as much pressure as I’d expected,” Diaz-Silverio admits. “The producers did an incredible job of creating a warm, welcoming and joyful environment, so any pressure I felt was sort of self-generated. They never made me feel like I had to prove myself or like I was green and inexperienced.

Henri Esteve is a charmer and a delight!
You may be familiar with his stint on Freeform's Grown-ish as Javi, but he'll make you laugh and give you all the family feels as Uncle Mike on Freevee's new coming-of-age series, Primo.
It's a series inspired by author, journalist, and show creator Shea Serrano's life and executive produced by comedy TV veteran Mike Shur.
So, yes, hot off the massive success of Jury Duty, Freevee may have delivered its second comedic, heartfelt, feel-good hit of the season.
Seriously, we love to see it.
We were fortunate enough to catch up with the multitalented, laid-back star to chat about working with a comedic legend, his inspiration for Uncle Mike, working alongside Christina Vidal, and his own advice for those coming up. Check it out!
So what attracted you to Primo?

This coming-of-age sitcom gives new meaning to the expression “Say uncle!” Primo, as the Latino family calls 16-year-old Rafa (newcomer Ignacio Diaz-Silverio), grows up in San Antonio with single mom Drea and the influence of his five devoted uncles. Trouble is, Mom’s brothers rarely agree — on anything. While bad boy Rollie (Johnny Rey Diaz) prescribes an act of violence to get a crush’s attention, crunchy Mondo (Efrain Villa) suggests communal crying — like a group hug, but wetter. (Credit: Amazon Freevee) Sharp and semi-autobiographical, the series is created by best-selling Movies (And Other Things) author Shea Serrano, with the writers’ room presence of Emmy-winning exec producer Mike Schur (Parks and Recreation). “Primo is considerably more sweet, charming and funny than I was, but his nervousness — that’s me,” Serrano says, noting that seconds into his alter ego’s audition, “We were like, ‘He’s got it!’” While Diaz-Silverio’s easy smile,...

Rafa Gonzales, the protagonist of the exceedingly likable new family comedy Primo, lives in San Antonio with his mother, Drea. Their modest ranch house should be more than enough for the two of them, if it weren’t for the fact that all five of Drea’s loud, opinionated, intrusive, knucklehead brothers are constantly there. On the list of unlikely cultural developments in 2023, Amazon Freevee producing two of the year’s best comedies would have ranked pretty high, and yet here we are. After delivering the unexpected delights of Jury Duty, the streamer is now debuting Primo, a family comedy that's sweet without being saccharine, smart without grinding its gears to make a point, and, best of all, incredibly funny.
Primo comes from executive producer Mike Schur, who built his brand on warm-hearted series like Parks and Recreation and The Good Place, and creator Shea Serrano, an author and journalist who's covered sports and entertainment at Grantland and The Ringer. The premise, drawn from Serrano's own life growing up in San Antonio, centers on Mexican-American teenager Rafa (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio) coming of age with a single mom (Christina Vidal) and her five brothers, each of whom take an active and frequently unhinged interest in helping raise him.

The ninth annual SeriesFest, an annual television-centric event held in Denver, kicks off Friday with a slightly abbreviated schedule in light of the writers strike. Per WGA rules, writers are not allowed to make “promotional appearances” at film festivals or at “For Your Consideration” Emmy events. Already, a number of FYC showcases have either been canceled, or continued on but with just a screening, no panel, due to the strike.
SeriesFest becomes the first festival to be impacted by the strike. This year’s event takes place from May 5 to May 10, which now happens to coincide with the early days of the strike. As a result, showrunners have opted out of a handful of panels, while screenings of many new and returning shows will now take place without talent/showrunner Q&As. It could be an early peak at the pivot that may have to take place with other upcoming festivals,...

When the Waves Are Gone (2022).Over the span of almost two decades, Lav Diaz has established himself not only as one of the most prolific filmmakers working in the realm of arthouse cinema—being perhaps the most acclaimed adherent of the slow expression—but also as a consistent observer of the political landscape of the Philippines. His method of work abounds in slowness, as well as the poetics of excess: long formats, politically-driven allegories, maximized genre capacity. The excessiveness appears in his preference for the independence of the film economy, too. Diaz not only directs and writes his films but oftentimes also designs, shoots and edits them, maintaining control over the final outcome—a whole universe of dark morality tales that encapsulate a gloomy here-and-now and down-to-earth scrutiny of the Philippine milieu. This rigidity in approach to medium translates to the choice of aesthetics. Diaz has embraced his favorite canvas: a grainy,...

Lengthy running times have largely confined the films of Filipino director Lav Diaz to the festival circuit: His breakthrough “Evolution of a Filipino Family” was shot over 10 years and clocked in at over 10 hours, and subsequent features like “Melancholia” and “Norte, the End of History” followed suit. Diaz has been categorized as a practitioner of “slow cinema,” and this has made his work sound even more forbidding outside hardcore cinephile circles.
But “When the Waves Are Gone,” his current feature, is surprisingly approachable and engrossing, especially in its dynamic first third when we are introduced to our two protagonists: Hermes (John Lloyd Cruz), a cop and instructor at a police academy, and Primo (Ronnie Lazaro), a former cop who has just gotten out of jail after 10 years and is seeking vengeance against Hermes for helping to get him sentenced.

In a follow up article in relation to my recent post “WWE: 4 Superstars to Look Out For In 2013” I thought I would I provide an Omega to that Alpha. 4 guys who had potential this past year but ended up being jobbers for the rest of the roster to plough over.
Now I want to get one thing straight right off the bat, I am not saying that these blew it of their own accord, quite the opposite in fact as I’m sure most of the following gentleman’s downfall was decided by WWE creative and there lack of actual creativity with these guys.
The following guys are still used on TV every so often but have the old position on the card as jobbers. A team of jobbers is needed in wrestling promotions because let’s face it, you can’t have everyone win every match now can you?...

2 Days from TLC, Big Show faces Jack Swagger and Orton and Ryder face Barrett and Ziggler. But first, Josh Matthews introduces Booker T ahead of his return to the ring against Cody Rhodes. Cole shows footage of Rhodes attacking Booker last week. He asks Booker if hes ready. “Do I look ready?” The fans think he does. Booker says he didn’t want this, cause he was happy being on commentary. But still “To to hell with Michael Cole.” Booker says its about Cody trying to make a name for himself. And the Book will be damned if Cody gets legitimised off his name. Funny how he still uses the Five Time WCW Champion line, even though hes also a WWE Champion. I would have thought the WWE Nit pickers would have been all over that one. He adds that he’s going to win the Ic Title from Rhodes.

Smackdown 11/11/11. Liverpool, England
11/11/11 I just like writing it. Hunico has made it into the opening credits already. That black taxi can only mean one thing. We’re in England for Smackdown, in “The home of the Beatles” Liverpool.
Randy Orton joins us in the ring with a microphone telling us that he doesn’t play well with others despite being a Survivor Series captain. He says every group he’s had has imploded with him doing something horrible to people who once were his friends. He however says he has no problem being captain since hes a leader not a follower. He has no problem beating up Rhodes, shutting up Christian, doesn’t have a problem dealing with Swagger and Hunico and especially has no problem…Well Wade Barrett was the only man left, but he’s coming to the ring now instead. Not a great reception for the UK’s own Wade Barrett.

Friday Night Smackdown! October 14th 2011
9 Days before Vengeance, we are in Dallas and Teddy Long is kicking off the show. And joining him on stage is the new interim General Manager, John Laurinaitis. God I hate spelling that. He’s Johnny Ace from now on. Long reminds us that tonight’s Smackdown becomes second longest running episodic television show behind Raw. Ace says he’s here lending Raw support. Long announces the largest Battle Royal in WWE history, Ace adds that the winner gets to choose a title and get a match Tonight! “If you’re ready to see this Battle Royal start right now. Give me a Holla Holla Holla!” And I assume someone gave him one, because here comes the entire Raw roster followed closely by Smackdown. Matt Striker is even wrestling.

The Toronto International Film Festival has lined up 25 features for its Discovery program. All the descriptions that follow are from the festival. Additional notes and more are on the way.
Pablo Giorgelli's Las Acacias. A truck driver has been charged with transporting a woman on the long journey from Paraguay's border to the city of Buenos Aires. He is totally unprepared for the extra passenger that will accompany them, the woman's infant daughter Jacinta, whose penetrating gaze eventually disarms his gruff exterior. Subtle and poignant, Giorgelli's 2011 Camera D'Or winner is a movingly beautiful road movie highlighted by stunning performances. (See the Cannes roundup.)
Tomás Lunák's Alois Nebel. Stories from the past and present converge at a small railway in Billy Potok, a tiny village on the Czech-Polish border. The local dispatcher, Alois Nebel, is a loner who prefers old timetables to people and has hallucinations of trains passing...

Almayer’s Folly (La Folie Almayer) Chantal Akerman, Belgium/France
North American Premiere
Somewhere in South-East Asia, in a little lost village on a wide and turbulent river, a European man clings to his pipe dreams out of love for his daughter. Working freely from Joseph Conrad’s debut novel, Akerman tells the story of a trader in 1950s Malaysia whose dreams of a Western life for his Malay daughter slowly lead to destruction. A quest for the absolute,...

Pretending Emo Is Primo
Step one to appreciating Steven Kilpatrick (that’s me-lazy wave included) is to understand that I used to be bitter, then I became an idealist, then I got into graduate school pursuing my dream-and now I’m bitter and educated. Well-at least, I hope, a little more educated than I was before.
Of course, Flannery O’Conner would tell you that colleges haven’t stifled enough of us writers over the years, so take that education with a grain of salt. Either way, color me tentatively unstifled and let’s move on to the good stuff.
I’m still here to talk about video games. However, my take on gaming is directly influenced by those years of snooty pedagogical training about craft and fiction. Imagine Daniel Craig strapped to a bottomless chair being hit in the testicles with John Gardner’s On Becoming a Novelist and...
