Kate Middleton, Prince William, and Prince Harry all paid their respects at the annual Remembrance Sunday service in London over the weekend. Kate, who is currently pregnant with her third child, donned a faux bob and a double-breasted Dolce & Gabbana coat for the somber event, and William and Harry suited up in their uniforms. Harry and Will both laid wreaths at The Cenotaph at the Whitehall war memorial in honor of soldiers who suffered or died in Wwi and WWII, while Kate watched the service from the balcony of the nearby Foreign and Commonwealth Office with Katharine, Duchess of Kent, and Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Prince Harry has done more this year than we'll probably ever do in our lifetimes, and he's showing no signs of slowing down. On Thursday, the royal visited Westminster Abbey in London, where he officially opened the Field of Remembrance. The memorial garden is organized annually by The Poppy Factory and honors fallen soldiers from Wwi and WWII. Harry suited up in his uniform and donned a red poppy above his ear as a symbol of the blood spilled in the wars. Harry also paid his respects by laying a cross made up of red poppies in front of wooden crosses from the graves of fallen soldiers before meeting with veterans, cadets, and their families. A sequel to Safe House is in development, reports have suggested. Universal Pictures has started work on a follow-up to the Denzel Washington thriller, and has hired original writer David Guggenheim to work on the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Safe House starred Washington as former CIA agent Tobin Frost. Leading a life of crime, he is attacked and sent to a CIA safe house in Cape Town run by Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds). (more)...

When one hears Universal intends to make a Safe House sequel, one is compelled to look up the original’s gross and see if that’s actually a wise move. Tonight is, therefore, the night I learn Daniel Espinosa‘s film made over $200 million worldwide on a budget which amounts to, in some sense, about half that cost; with that, a sequel isn’t the weirdest idea.
THR has learned of this movement on Universal’s part, namely that the studio is hing David Guggenheim to return and pen further adventures set in this world. In a more specific sense, it’s expected that Ryan Reynolds will reprise his CIA agent role from the first, while Denzel Washington could, in theory, come back. This is only a problem because… well, I won’t spoil Safe House, but you might catch the general drift of such a caveat. Prequel time!

Since the first film managed to make $202 million worldwide, Universal is naturally looking to construct a sequel to this year’s CIA thriller Safe House. The first step is laying the foundation, and original writer David Guggenheim has been hired to start work.Guggenheim, of course, famously wrote the first movie as a spec while he toiled as an editor at Us Weekly. The story found bored rookie agent Ryan Reynolds given a crash course on fieldwork when he has to keep a rogue agent (Denzel Washington) safe from even more powerful people who want him dead. We’d caution, before you read any further, that spoilers lie ahead.Naturally, the studio has not released any details yet about what the new movie might focus on, especially since Washington’s character ends the first one taking a dirt nap. But there’s always a chance the producers could decide to...

Safe House

Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Denzel Washington, Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson | Written by David Guggenheim | Directed by Daniel Espinosa
Action is a genre that tends to go in trends. During the 80’s we had the overblown muscle bound action films like Rambo and Commando. That changed after the success of Die Hard in the late 80’s, then once again in the late 90’s with The Matrix. Lately action films have been attempting to replicate the style and tone of the Bourne series. Safe House is the latest proof of that trend. While it won’t go down as new high watermark for the genre it will serve as example of why imitation can be the best kind of flattery.

Last week brought Ralph Fiennes’ directorial debut to the shelves in Coriolanus, in which he starred as the eponymous lead alongside Gerard Butler, as well as the likes of Michael Dowse’s Goon, and Madonna’s W.E.
This week has, as ever, a fantastic new selection of films and TV programmes available for purchase from today, including three of my all-time favourite TV programmes. On top of that, there’s an Oscar winner, an Oscar nominee, and one film that everyone was talking about in the run-up to the awards season but was noticeably absent when the Academy Award nominees were announced in January.
My personal picks of the week:
With so much choice, I was forced to divide into two categories of film and TV this week:
James Bobbins’ The Muppets & Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar
Entourage Season 8, Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 8 & One Tree Hill Season 9

Chicago – Some studios seem hellbent on going out of their way to diminish audience expectations prior to a film’s release. The thoughtful, quietly powerful thriller, “The Grey,” was marketed to resemble a silly man vs. wolf action blockbuster, and yet still managed to have a big opening weekend at the box office. Are mainstream audiences seduced by the promise of dreck?
The ads for Daniel Espinosa’s “Safe House” portrayed the film as if it were an uninspired retread of “Training Day,” with a scenery-chewing Denzel Washington causing his screen partner/hostage to squirm with anxiety. Yet the film itself is more intriguing than one may have expected, since the script allows for a healthy dose of moral ambiguity. Sure, some characters are rotten to their core, but the good guys aren’t saints either. CIA agent Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds) operates from a place of pure-hearted integrity, yet...

A C.I.A agent is forced to take charge of a deadly rogue agent when his safe house is compromised, killing all of the other operatives. He then begins a dangerous journey trying to bring his prisoner into custody of his superiors. Ryan Reynolds plays Matt Weston, a good agent stationed in South Africa in charge of a safe house that has seen little or no action in a year. He longs for more responsibility and boy does he get it when public enemy number one arrives in the form of Tobin Frost played by Denzel Washington, legendary C.I.A operative turned mercenary, seemingly intent on selling state secrets and being a general badass. Frost is forced to turn himself in after a transaction involving M.I.6 intelligence and seeks refuge in the U.S Consulate, where he is transported to Weston’s safe house. It is here...

It’s safe to say that any film starring the charismatic Denzel Washington is placed on the box office map long before it’s even had a chance of a good run and further scrutiny. Although both the Training Day star and Safe House director Daniel Espinosa – steering his first English-language project here – were against labelling the film ‘an action thriller’ in London recently, it is in effect such, so will naturally come up against the inevitable Bourne benchmark comparison.
Ryan Reynolds stars opposite Washington in this as young CIA agent Matt Weston who is tasked with looking after fugitive and rogue ex-agent Tobin Frost (Washington) in a safe house in Cape Town. However, the safe house is attacked, and Weston finds himself on the run with his charge from a yet undistinguishable enemy bent on destroying Frost – and him.

This Iq level of this violent, sub-Tony Scott action thriller starring Denzel Washington is depressingly low
A big, dumb, boring beefcake of a film, a violent sub-Tony Scott action thriller, always on the point of running out of narrative steam. Denzel Washington produces and stars as Tobin Frost, a legendary, enigmatic CIA agent who supposedly "went rogue" ages ago, selling secrets to all and sundry; now, threatened by the various enemies he has amassed, Frost gives himself up at the Us embassy in Cape Town and is assigned to a "safe house" under the care of twitchy rookie Matt Weston, played by Ryan Reynolds. Is Tobin going to escape? Or try to "get inside Matt's head" – and somehow outsmart Matt and get his guard down? Well, however much we are led to expect these cerebral thrills, the Iq-level remains crassly low. No dialogue scene can extend for more...

Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds are along for the ride as Swedish director Daniel Espinosa follows the Scandinavian trail to Hollywood blazed by Nicolas Winding Refn
When people readabout what it actually is they say, 'Oh, that's nothing. You lay down, they put a wet towel over your face and then they pour water over it,' but the sensation is horrific. YouTube it! Most people couldn't handle a second."
Chilean-Swedish director Daniel Espinosa is cheerfully describing the mechanics of waterboarding. It seems as apt a topic of discussion as any for a director described by Ryan Reynolds, the star of his new film, as an "intuitive, intellectual thug". But this isn't just sadistic small talk. Espinosa's latest, Safe House, contains a prominent waterboarding scene, with Denzel Washington as the victim, and Espinosa is at pains to stress that the film's portrayal was as accurate as possible. "I wanted it...

In "Safe House," Denzel Washington plays one badass sociopath, murderer, traitor and still manages to steal screen time from all of those around him and to be charming to boot. This includes Ryan Reynolds (Matt Weston) whose character is along for the ride and a backdrop for Tobin Frost’s (Washington’s) driving escape from the CIA. Julian Assange anyone? (Not that we know if Assange is guilty, whereas we know Frost is.) The script by David Guggenheim is one-dimensional in that the film is about Frost’s running from the CIA and from Weston, the...

In the classic “End of the World” comedy sketch starring Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, a slapdash cult goes up into some mountains in an effort to escape the imminent apocalyptic wind. “We shall be safe up here, safe as houses,” intones the cult leader. “And, err, what will happen to the houses?” asks a follower. “Well naturally they’ll all be swept away and consumed by fire,” the leader replies, matter-of-factly. Safe houses: they so rarely live up to their name.
It doesn’t appear that way at this film’s opening, of course. We begin with a sedentary montage of protagonist Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds) going about his business in beautiful Capetown – a good half of it with his shirt off, naturally. He trundles into town on his motorbike, sips cocktails with his French belle by the beach, showers with her, and then wanders off to work. That...

New Safe House movie delivered tons of violence, intense drama & more. Universal Pictures released their new action/thriller flick "Safe House" into theaters this weekend. I just got done checking it out,and I thought it was just,ok, for me as I found myself, dosing off quite a bit. The plot just didn't really hold my attention well. The only thing that kept waking me up was the loud, freaking gun shots that rang off, constantly, throughout the entire film. They were pretty wicked. The movie stars: Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard, Vera Farmiga, Fares Fares, Robert Patrick, Nora Arnezeder, Liam Cunningham, Joel Kinnaman, and Ruben Blades. In the film, rogue ex-cia agent Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) flees to a Us embassy while under fire after acquiring a seemingly invaluable file. You will not be surprised by "Safe House." It is pretty much exactly what it looks like. It's an action exercise with two fairly dynamic leads, both of them taking visible delight in putting the other through their paces. It is a solid big studio debut for Swedish director Daniel Espinosa, and whatever merit the film has is due largely to his aggressive aesthetic choices. Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds) is a CIA operative looking to make his name inside the agency. He's pulling a first posting punishment of sorts, working in a South African safehouse, tending this anonymous space every day...

Safe House is a violent two hour ride that'll feed your action fix but leave your brain on standby. But who's really going to buy a ticket to Safe House for some mental gymnastics? Odds are you saw the trailer and said, "alright, that looks like it could be an entertaining action movie." Well, I'm here to tell you that, thankfully, the film lives up to that expectation.
The story follows Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds), a house-sitter at a CIA safe house in South Africa. Weston's frustrated that this position has no upward mobility and he'll be in a rut for the foreseeable future. But, that's about to change thanks to super fugitive Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington). Frost is a former CIA operative that went rogue and began selling classified information to the highest bidder. After years of eluding capture, Frost turns himself in and is transported to Weston's safe house.

Exotic faraway locales, car chases, massive firepower, deceitful bosses, and intense hand-to-hand combat have been the staples of spy thrillers for many decades. The genre has been attracting more prestige stars these days because one film series has injected a lot of life ( almost a shot of adrenaline ) and box office bucks into what had become standard ” who’s got the microfilm ” flicks : the Bourne trilogy. These Matt Damon starrers turned up the volume so much that even the king of spies, James Bond took notice and overhauled the almost fifty year film series ( Casino Royale moves at a much faster pace ). The new spy thriller, Safe House, has the non-stop action set pieces, but doubles the protagonists. Taking a break from the raucous ( and often romantic ) comedies, and after a poorly received super-hero stint, is Ryan Reynolds. And for the big prestige factor, how about two time Oscar winner Denzel Washington?...

Talk about an introduction.
"Safe House," the CIA thriller that opens in theaters on Friday, gives no overt indication that it is a foreign-language filmmaker's American feature debut. If anything, the film -- which features Denzel Washington as Tobin Frost, a CIA agent-turned-traitor, and Ryan Reynolds as Matt Weston, the young, idealistic, agent charged with keeping him in custody -- seems like a classic studio picture meant to bring out big audiences and churn out big popcorn sales. That's no mistake, either: Swedish filmmaker Daniel Espinosa ("Snabba Cash") synthesized a century of American cinematic history in an effort to deliver a movie that hits the beats familiar to Stateside ticket buyers.
Espinosa called The Huffington Post earlier this month to talk about the film.
This was your first English feature -- how was that experience, was it a big change for you?

The Bourne Legacy is hitting theaters later this year as Universal attempts to continue that franchise without Matt Damon, but Safe House sure feels like a trial run, or perhaps just an opportunity to get the target audience for that film in the theater in an effort to make sure they see the trailer for the upcoming August release. Either way, if the goal was to make a below average copy of a film we've all seen before then job well done.
Everything about Safe House feels recycled all the way down to the film's poster (just look here) and the dingy, Man on Fire tint making it look as if the film stock was pulled from the worst toilet in Scotland. From a story and character perspective, it's a film with big promises and very little delivered as each scene is no different from one to the next and...

This weekend, Denzel Washington (Virtuosity) shows a young punk, played by Chris Pine Ryan Reynolds, that an old dog still knows a lot of tricks in the new thriller Safe House. As a service, we answer every question that you could possibly have about Safe House. Q: How many safe houses are in Safe House? A: Three. Q: Why is a safe house needed in Safe House? A: Denzel Washington plays Tobin Frost, a former CIA agent who has been "off the grid" for the last nine or ten years (depending on which character that you get your exposition from). He turns himself in at the American embassy in Cape Town, South Africa. From there, Tobin Frost is taken to a safe house for interrogating. Q: Why would Tobin Frost turn himself in? A: During the opening scenes, Frost is ambushed by gunmen. His only option is to turn himself...

It’s difficult to take about “Safe House” without evoking the legacy of the “Bourne” movies, the influence is that obvious. Stylistically, thematically, and visually, “Safe House” is definitely getting an invite to the “Bourne” family reunion. This isn’t meant to be a knock against the film, especially since the “Bourne” films are some of the best kick-ass action movies in recent times, this is a simple statement of fact. And director Daniel Espinosa’s “Safe House” is a solid, if by the numbers, knock off. Though it isn’t anything you haven’t seen before, “Safe House” is lightning-fast, and full of shootouts, brutal fistfights, and chase scenes. In the end, isn’t that what you really want out of an action film? For those of you who’ve seen the previews and have questions about Ryan Reynolds playing a badass covert operative, don’t worry, he’s not.

If Hollywood has taught us anything about the CIA it’s that those bastards really can’t be trusted. The exception to the rule is that the lower the character is on the agency’s totem pole the more honorable and good they’ll most likely be. They’re naive idealists who have yet to be molded by the big, bad world into heartless, morally bankrupt pricks motivated by warped patriotism and self interest. Which brings us to Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds), a low level agent stationed at the same, boring post for the last twelve months. He’s a “housekeeper” at a safe house in Cape Town, South Africa, and every day he waits for a coded call alerting him to the imminent arrival of an incoming “guest.” The call finally comes when Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) mysteriously turns himself into the local Us embassy after a decade on the run as an ex-agent turned traitor...

Chicago – “Safe House” is so overly familiar that you not only will think that you’ve seen it before and know exactly where it’s going before it gets there, but you will also barely remember having seen it once it’s over. It’s cinematic fast food – relatively streamlined but also not difficult to make for anyone involved, generally bad for you, and totally forgettable. It’s all so, well, “Safe.”
Rating: 2.0/5.0
It seems clear to me that “Safe House” started life as a better film. Here’s the pitch and the movie I wish I had seen – “Keyser Soze goes to a safe house.” Imagine that movie. A world-famous, notorious criminal ends up in a safe house run by a relatively green agent and the poor guy has to deal not only with the lunatic now in his care but also everyone who wants him dead. That movie could have been great.

The term “action porn” gets thrown around rather haphazardly, but it’s rare that a movie embodies the term quite as strongly as “Safe House.” The scenes of fighting, shooting, and car-chasing are all quite breathtaking, but you’ll be twitching for the fast-forward button during the seemingly endless sequences of plot development and dialogue that connect all the thrilling stuff together. CIA agent Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds) hopes for a more exciting assignment after 12 months of minding the agency’s Cape Town, South Africa safe house, a gig that mostly involves sitting by...

There should be more thrillers like Safe House: smart, engaging movies made for adults. With a propulsive score and breakneck pacing to match, the movie tears through a series of double-crosses, shootouts, and narrow escapes usually reserved for summer blockbusters. Lucky for us, it looks like summer’s come early this year. Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds) is a [...]

In which we learn, if you’re a C.I.A. operative who’s captured a world-class baddie, whatever you do, do not got to a safe house. In Safe House, directed by Daniel Espinosa (Snabba Cash), safe houses are the most dangerous places in the world.
Poor young Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds) just wants a better gig, having paid his dues for a long, boring year at an empty safe house in Cape Town. He puts in a call to his upper-tier mentor David Barlow (Brendan Gleeson) and tells him just that. Barlow tells him to hold tight, things will happen.
Enter that world class baddie, Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington). Sporting gray-tipped hair spiking upwards and outwards, Washington has his usual amount of fun playing a character like this. On one hand, watching the aging-but-never-old movie star take so much time off (his last film was in 2010) and then...

BuzzFocus recently had the chance to sit down with Safe House (starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds) Director Daniel Espinosa.
It was a more intimate press conference, and I use the word conference loosely. The PR team had setup an informal discussion with the gaming community and the director since the studio released a Facebook game based on the film. Although the discussion started out with the Facebook game, we quickly learned that Espinosa was not familiar with it. It was the first time he had heard about the game and exclaimed how “cool” it was for a game to be developed from his movie.
We then moved on to discuss his filmmaking process. Safe House is a gritty action film in the vein of the Bourne Identity. Washington plays Tobin Frost, a former government operative who has gone rogue. Tobin is taken to a Safe House, manned by Matt Weston...

Oo oo oo, it’s CIA action porn when Safe House finally gets going, all mysterious black SUVs and “kill the surveillance cameras” and stoic badassery all round. It’s sorta exciting, apparently, for Ryan Reynolds’ (Green Lantern, Buried) Matt Weston, the “housekeeper” at a safe house in South Africa that, it seems, the Company isn’t even supposed to have there. Because it means he finally gets to do something CIAish! Mostly he’s just been lying on the beach with his gorgeous French girlfriend, we’re told. Now he gets to run around with Denzel Washington! Because Denzel (Unstoppable, The Book of Eli) is “notorious traitor” and “rogue CIA agent” Tobin Frost -- the sort of name people only have in movies -- who was brought in to the safe house by not-rogue untraitorous CIA agents. Frost walked right up to the American consulate in Cape Town rather...

Ryan Reynolds learned 'so much' from Denzel Washington while filming 'Safe House'. The 'Green Lantern' hunk believes the 57-year-old star is one of the most disciplined actors he's ever worked with, and he found him to be a great inspiration while shooting the action thriller. He told CBS News: 'You learn so much from working with a guy like him. Not only is he a pleasure to work with and to see that somebody can be so passionate when he's been doing it for so long, but you see the kind of discipline that he brings. We’re all aware of the dangers that a first-time director can pose to promising ideas; we need only look at a director as talented and revered as David Fincher – who has long redeemed himself since Alien 3 – to see how even the best-intended first forays into Hollywood filmmaking can fall irreparably flat. Daniel Espinosa, though no newbie to directing – having helmed three films in his native Sweden – finds himself inexorably snared between his own gritty if overly busy form, and the disappointingly frequent boneheadedness of the film’s script.
The real attraction of this thriller – to the audience and no doubt to the crew – is the enticing pairing here of A-listers Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. No one is safe in the "Safe House," with Ryan Reynolds as Matt Weston, a young buck CIA agent looking to prove his worth when notorious criminal mastermind Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) is brought into his charge. The two go on the run together, and Weston has to play some mind games to figure out whether Frost or his own CIA bosses are the real bad guys.
