Saw 6 Review

25 October 2009 4:04 PM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Has there ever been a movie franchise as user-friendly as the “Saw” films? “Saw VI,” the latest installment, may have a new director (Kevin Greutert), but the writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, collaborating on their third consecutive “Saw,” make sure that it’s as customer-service-oriented as ever.

Somewhere within the Saw universe’s ridiculously convoluted back story is a film showing how the dying “Jigsaw Killer” John Kramer (Tobin Bell) won the lottery, set up corporate offices, and hired legions of worker elves to build a “torture district” the size of Disneyland. It would be a helluva lot more entertaining than watching his uber-secret second protégé (Mandylor, Mandylor, Costas Mandylor) tiptoe around the events of the previous films, which was all that the abysmal Saw V really had to offer…read more [DreadCentral]

I really don’t want to talk about the plot, because if you’ve seen a few of these films, »

Film: Review:Saw VI

23 October 2009 2:23 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

As the health-care debate rages on, let it be known that Jigsaw, the sinister puppetmaster played in life and beyond by Tobin Bell, favors a robust public option. (This, in the world of political punditry, is what they call a “game-changer.”) It isn’t in character for the Saw movies to embrace topicality, but at this point, anything that can help distinguish one entry from the next counts as progress. Since the first Saw came out in 2004, Lionsgate and a limited group of artisans (the writing team of Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton have turned out the last three ... »

Movie Review: “Saw VI”

23 October 2009 2:09 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Seen on: October 23, 2009

The players: Director: Kevin Greutert, Writers: Marcus Dunstan, Patrick Melton, Cast: Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Mark Rolston, Betsy Russell, Shawnee Smith

Facts of interest: None.

The plot: When the FBI draws closer to Hoffman, he is forced to set a game into motion, and Jigsaw's grand scheme is finally understood.

Our thoughts: Kevin Greutert’s “Saw VI” definitely fails to revitalize the popular big-screen horror series, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s not as bad an installment as its two most recent predecessors. One thing is for certain though: this sixth film is still bloody and gives cinemagoers a better insight into Jigsaw’s entire scheme. »

Review: Saw VI the Year's Best Supergory Movie About Health Insurance

Review in a Hurry: Capitalism beware! Michael Moore was a pussycat compared to Saw's John "Jigsaw" Kramer (Tobin Bell), whose we-mean-it-this-time last posthumous wish was apparently that vengeance be wrought upon predatory lenders and health insurance executives. No, really. Enjoy. The Bigger Picture: The Saw saga was meant to end with part three, which nicely concluded the diabolical life of both the Jigsaw killer and his apprentice Amanda (Shawnee Smith). Lionsgate, however, saw more dollar signs to be had, and in the hands of scribes Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, a new storyline was superimposed upon previous events, adding needless layers of retroactive continuity and unveiling a far more annoying apostle... »

Saw VI (Film Review)

23 October 2009 1:20 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Since Saw has become the 21st century’s Friday The 13th—an unstoppable once-a-year franchise with a signature villain—it only makes sense that in both cases, the sixth entry has proven to be surprisingly better than expected. Not that Saw VI takes the series into any surprising new directions, nor does it make much that’s fresh out of the saga’s stock ingredients. Yet it stacks up as a scarier and more satisfying viewing experience than the last few sequels.

Whether it’s due to the way director Kevin Greutert (the longtime Saw editor making his debut at the helm) and returning VI and V scripters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan spin their narrative, or maybe the fact that I’m just getting soft, the nagging issues that have plagued all the previous movies didn’t nag quite so much this time. It remains thoroughly implausible that Hoffman »

Interview: 'Saw VI' Screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan

22 October 2009 7:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

According to longtime Saw editor and now first-time director Kevin Greutert, coming up with new and interesting ways to kill people is not as easy as one might imagine, especially when you've already come up with a gauntlet of gory deaths in not one but five previous films. "There's no point in trying to hide it," Greutert said in a roundtable interview in Los Angeles last week. "I think the films have this longevity because we've managed to rise to the task, somehow. But, it made me want to cry sometimes, sitting in a room, brainstorming and pounding my head against the wall. You can think of cool ways to kill people, but it still has to fit in with our story."

"It's very complicated, he insisted. "We want to always push the envelope to the end, in terms of insanity and mayhem, but if you go too far, it becomes campy or silly. »

Saw VI - The Cast and the Creators Speak

22 October 2009 4:05 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Despite the tagline for Saw V, audiences left theaters last year with only one thing to say: “I can believe how it ends.” But one year and another Saw later, the creators insist that fans will be much happier with the new installment.

“I learned a lot,” says series editor and Saw VI director Kevin Greutert, “because I spent so much time in the cutting room with the previous directors. We’ve talked about all this stuff up and down and the history of movies and horror. So yeah, I had a huge advantage in this film that Darren [Lynn Bousman] and James [Wan] and to some extent David [Hackl] didn’t have so absolutely, I’ve learned a ton.”

Sitting side-by-side, Jigsaw killer Tobin Bell and the immortal Costas Mandylor have nothing by praise for Greutert. “He understands the films, he understands the connecting of the dots and where this potential richness, and that’s great, »

'Saw VI' Out Tomorrow, But What About 'Saw VII' Through 'XI'?

22 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Six years! Six movies! Can you believe it? It seems like it was just yesterday we were all hearing about this twisted short film by some whippersnappers named James Wan and Leigh Whannell, but today their baby "Saw" is the flagship franchise for the entire horror film industry. Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), the series' constant villain, has joined the pantheon of scary movie greats like Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers. It's even recognized as the series that brought the horror subgenre of "torture porn" to the masses. Yes, it's a different world we live in.

Indeed it's hard to imagine a world without "Saw". And why should we expect there to ever be such a thing? The "Saw VI" writing team of Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton are already signed on to work through "Saw VIII." Seeing as how people are still turning out in droves to see Jigsaw's latest deathtraps every autumn, »

Excl: Saw VI 's Marcus Dunstan & Patrick Melton

20 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

They're not allowed to publicly speak about what went wrong with Saw V , which was critically torn asunder, even by the most devout fans of the series, like it was a victim of Jigsaw's many traps, but writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton will gladly talk to you about how Saw VI is an improvement. This latest entry, directed by series editor Kevin Greutert (making his directorial debut) and coming to theaters October 23, is the third Saw film penned by the duo, also behind this summer's The Collector and the Feast trilogy. They've had the unenviable task of picking up a storyline which found its principle antagonist, Jigsaw (aka John Kramer) dead. For Saw IV they deftly met that challenge head-on by telling a story than ran parallel to Saw III . In Saw V ,... »

'Saw VI' And 'Cirque Du Freak' Call For An Early Halloween In This Week's Box Office Poll

19 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's a strange week for new releases, primarily because the latest, sixth entry in the "Saw" franchise is hitting theaters a full week before Halloween. Traditionally, each new "Saw" hits on the Friday before the year's trick or treaters emerge. Following a trend set with last year's "Saw V," the new entry will have a week to breathe before the Halloween festivities begin. Expect lots more Jigsaw puzzling and gore-nography in "Saw VI," which joins newcomer director Kevin Greutert with writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who penned "Saw IV" onwards.

Also somewhat in the horror vein -- though more in the "hey, vampires are popular vein" -- this week is "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant," which I caught a few weeks ago and am sort of regarding as a male-oriented attempt to latch onto the "Twilight" phenomenon. I wasn't a huge fan of the movie, but it is »

Saw VI Screenwriters Say Saw VII 3-D and Saw VIII May Be the Last

16 October 2009 1:59 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The release of Saw VI is just around the corner, but it's never too early to talk about the future. Producer Mark Burg and co-screenwriter Marcus Dunstan spoke with Collider and revealed what fans can look forward to in Saw VII and VIII. Burg claims that VIII may be the end for the series.

We're definitely making Saw VII. We're starting in January, and it's going to be in 3-D. The storyline that we started in Saw V and carry through Saw VI, ends at Saw VIII. Where it goes beyond that, I couldn't tell you. In my mind and in [producer] Oren [Koule]'s mind, we have the story threaded through Saw VIII. After that, I can't tell you that the franchise will continue.

Dunstan explained that knowing what that end will be is a positive thing for himself and co-screenwriter Patrick Melton.

That helps when writing, though. Even if it's a small detail, »

Saw VII And VIII Are Coming, And In 3-D

When the first Saw movie came out in 2004, it was a relatively new look at the serial killer movie with a nice twist ending that surprised audiences. Every year since then, however, audiences have been assaulted with an unrelenting barrage of blood and stupid that is perpetuated by consistent box office success (though last year's, Saw V, witnessed returns drop to $56.7 million domestically.) Prophesying that Saw VI will fall in line with the others (hint: low budget + sheeple= success), the writers and one of the producers have said that the Medieval torture gears for a seventh and eighth have begun to turn, this time with the added gimmick of three dimensions.
