J. J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are three of the busiest men in show business. The director and writers of this summer's hugely successful re-imagining of Star Trek are also behind Fox's hit TV show, Fringe, and 2006's Mission: Impossible III. On top of that Kurtzman and Orci are also responsible for this summer's other huge box office hit, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen while Abrams is putting the finishing touches on the final season of his television phenomenon, Lost. So needles to say the men are constantly busy with multiple projects but they did have the time to stop by Santa Monica yesterday for a Paramount event honoring the release of Star Trek and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, on DVD and Blue Ray later this fall. The talented creators shared some of their pending sequels and upcoming projects with the audience.

Simply judging from the looks of this latest trailer for the Hughes Brothers’ The Book of Eli, we might have our hands on the best post-apocalyptic action film since Mel Gibson took the leather gear off in the 90s.
The Book of Eli, starring Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis, centers around Washington’s lone hero Eli, who has in his possession what looks like the biblical book of Genesis, on his quest to reform society. Standing in his way is a small town villain in the form of Carnegie (Gary Oldman), who won’t stop until the book is in his possession.
At this point, The Book of Eli has enough stacked in its favor that I’ll be there opening day. I love this genre, and with Oldman in the villain role, you can do no wrong, and Washington is a proven edgy hero. The Hughes Brothers »

Collider has exclusively broken the news that the rumored-dead Akira movie is in fact alive and well over at Warner Bros.
The website’s inside source claims that two screenwriters are currently at work on Akira, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, who are credited with doing a lot of initial script work for Iron Man (though that script went through several on-set rewrites). The pair also did the pen-work for the excellent Children of Men and are working on the script for the upcoming Cowboys and Aliens, which could re-unite them with Iron Man director Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr.
So what is being planned for the Akira movie and how closely will it resemble Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1988 anime classic? Keep reading to the learn the answer.
The Akira anime was set in “Neo-Tokyo” of 2019, so first order of business for an American live-action remake is to transport the story to the U. »

In February of last year, it was reported that Ruairi Robinson had signed on to direct the live-action adaptation of "Akira" for Warner Bros Pictures. Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) was set to write the script with Leonardo DiCaprio and Joseph Gordon-Levitt both rumored to star. The adaptation was set for 2009, but there was obviously no movement on the project. Then three months ago, we learned that Robinson left "Akira," which Warner Bros considered dead. Now comes news, via Collider, that "Akira" is back on track and screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man) are about to turn in their first draft. The site added that the story will take place in Manhattan and will include the famous motorcycle. If the script is approved, production will begin next year for a 2011 release. "Akira" originated in 1988 as a manga and then as an animated film co-written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. »

All hope seemed lost for the live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's epoch-making anime Akira. But Collider are quoting a "trusted source" that tells them not only is the project still alive, but Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, who adapted Children of Men so succesfully, are hard at work on the script. The project was originally mooted at Sony in the 1990s, but was revived more recently by Warner Bros. with names like Stephen Norrington, Jon Peters, Ruairi Robinson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Whitta and Andrew Lazar all attached at various points in one capacity or another. It's due to relocate the story from neo-Tokyo to Manhattan (neo-Manhattan?) and initial reports suggested two films, but it's such a colossally expensive proposal (some estimates put it north of $300m) that Warners will want to be very sure of their investment before work starts in earnest.Things had gone ominously quiet of late, but »

Warner Bros' live-action adaptation of Akira is not dead afterall. Collider has confirmed that screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are hard at work on the project. Fergus and Ostby wrote earlier drafts of Children of Men and are credited with Iron Man. The screenplay is set in a post-apocalyptic "New Manhattan" and will feature Akira's famous red motorcycle. The original Katsuhiro Otomo anime was set in a futuristic and post-war city, Neo-Tokyo, in 2019. Let's just hope it doesn't end up looking like This. The film has been in development by Warner Brothers and Leonardo DiCaprio's production company Appian Way for some time, and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) had previously worked on the project. Here is an excerpt from a previous posting by Russ Fischer: No cast has ever publicly revealed to be attached. The involvement of Appian Way led many to suspect that DiCaprio »

In less than six hours from the time I started typing this sentence I will be on a plane leaving sunny Seattle, Washington for 80-degree weather and 70% humidity in the sauna known as San Diego for my fourth trip to the San Diego Comic Con and while this was the week we began looking at the potential Oscar nominees it is also the week we will take a look at next summer's blockbusters. Then again, even Oscar has a presence at this year's Con. Of course, I could make a bit of a stretch citing the attendance from Oscar nominees (and some winners) including Peter Jackson, Denzel Washington, Jackie Earle Haley, Josh Brolin, Robert Downey Jr., Diablo Cody, Jason Reitman, Nicolas Cage, Terry Gilliam, Robert Zemeckis, Jennifer Connelly, Woody Harrelson and Don Cheadle, but I think you all know who I am talking about... You probably remember that a little over a year ago, the news hit that Leonardo DiCaprio would be producing a live action version of the beloved anime, Akira, and as to be expected, fans were peeved. Within minutes, comment boards (including ours) were jammed with cries of white-washing, racism, and general predictions of overall crappiness. But, if you happen to have been one of those fans crying for blood; I've got some good news for you. Bloody Disgusting now reports that the live-action Akira has been pronounced "Dead as a doornail" by not one, but two inside sources -- I guess we should have seen this coming when the film was promised to be released in 2009, and there wasn't a signed cast member in sight.
For those not familiar with Akira, it was the story of a teen biker gang member who is subjected to government experiments and unleashes destruction on a post-nuclear Tokyo. »

Long without any updates, "Akira" has been struck with a rumor that the project has come to a halt. Bloody Disgusting was the first to bring up the possibility to the surface, reporting that separate sources have confirmed the live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's manga is "dead as a doornail".
Putting into attention more bad news, the horror movies site added that director Ruairi Robinson who is expected to make his directorial debut with "Akira" has left this big screen project. So far, there are yet words from both Warner Brothers and Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way on whether the story is true or not.
"Akira" was originated in 1988 as a manga, before was made into an animated film co-written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. Set in a neon-lit post apocalyptic "New Tokyo" in 2019, it centers on a teenage biker gang member who became a government experiment subject that let loose his hidden power. »

Early last year Warner Bros. announced that it was planning to turn anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel Akira into two live-action feature films. The first flick was said to be on the fast-track for a summer 2009 release. Well, summer ’09 is here and there’s no Akira film on the horizon. Instead, the folks over at Bloody Disgusting are reporting that the project, which was being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Apian Way, is dead. Up and coming director Ruairi Robinson, who earned an Oscar nomination for his short film Fifty Percent Grey, was attached to helm but according to Bd, who confirmed the news with two separate sources, he as now left the project. Each feature was to be based on three of the books in Otomo's series. The story takes place in New Manhattan, a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years earlier. Gary Whitta »

The live-action adaptation of the classic anime Akira is dead, according to a report from Bloody Disgusting. The film has been in the hands of Warner Brothers and Leonardo DiCaprio's production company Appian Way for some time, and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) has been working to crack the script. The plan, reportedly, was to craft two films in order to preserve the scope of the massive manga by Katsuhiro Otomo (who co-wrote and directed the anime, as well) with Ruairi Robinson directing. But Robinson is now said to be off the project, which is also 'dead as a doornail'. Quite a few changes would have been made to the material; notably, the live-action film would have been set in 'New Manhattan', rather than the Neo-Tokyo of the original manga and anime. No cast was ever publicly revealed to be attached. The involvement of Appian Way led many »

It has been revealed that Heroes star Masi Oka (the time-traveling Hiro) has come up with an idea for a movie called The Defenders, an idea which has been picked up by Dreamworks for development. The wheels of production for the movie have already started turning, with Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci on-board to produce, Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) on-board to write the script, and D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye, Disturbia) in talks to direct.
In the vein of the upcoming Gerard Butler film Gamer, The Defenders is taking the world of online multiplayer video games and making it into a big-screen adventure. From The Hollywood Reporter comes the following synopsis:
“The story centers on a group of mostly teenagers from around the world who are involved in a multiplayer video game, each unaware of who they really are behind the cover of their consoles and avatars. »

“Heroes” star Masi Oka may have had a hand in saving the world (as well as a certain cheerleader), but now he’s stepping up to mastermind a plot of his own creation. Not a world domination plot, mind you. Oka has successfully pitched DreamWorks on “The Defenders,” a family adventure conceived by the actor out of his experiences playing massively multiplayer online role-playing games, aka MMORPGs a la “World of Warcraft.”
Oka will executive produce the project, joined by “Fringe” and “Star Trek” producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that “The Book of Eli” writer Gary Whitta is already nailed down to deliver a script, and that “Eagle Eye” director D.J. Caruso is “in talks” to helm. The story also reveals that — surprise, surprise — DreamWorks will develop a video game tie-in for the feature. Given the long-term costs involved in maintaining an Mmorpg, I expect »

The story centers on a group of mostly teenagers from around the world who are involved in a multiplayer video game, each unaware of who they really are behind the cover of their consoles and avatars.
