The words “Quentin Tarantino” and “video store” will forever be linked in the popular imagination. But imagine that Quentin didn’t just work at a video store. Imagine that he owned, operated, designed, and organized every shelf of the video store of his dreams. That place might have looked a lot like Kim’s Video.
If you were an ardent film fanatic and you walked into Kim’s, the fabled New York movie-rental emporium, which opened in 1987 and ultimately expanded to five Manhattan locations (the most famous was Mondo Kim’s on St. Mark’s Place), the store looked like nothing so much as the inside of your brain. At Kim’s, you seemed to be standing in the middle of an explosion of cinema. It was a store where grindhouse movies rubbed shoulders with Bergman and Bresson, where the wall of horror included films by Dario Argento that weren’t even out on video,...

Stars: Divine, Tab Hunter, Edith Massey, David Samson, Mary Garlington, Ken King | Written and Directed by John Waters
After his prolific 1970s, enfant terrible John Waters directed only two films in the 1980s, at each end of the decade. They were also his two most mainstream and – relatively speaking – palatable works. One was 1988’s Hairspray, and the other was Polyester, made in 1981.
Waters’ muse Divine plays Francine Fishpaw, a middle-aged housewife who’s married to a wealthy porn cinema owner, Elmer (David Samson). They have two teenage kids: the uncontrollable and self-destructive Lu-lu (Mary Garlington), and Dexter (Ken King), whose frustrated foot fetish leads him to a stint in prison after a rampage as the “Baltimore Foot Stomper”.
Like most Waters flicks, there’s no real plot, just a melting pot of outrageous characters doing hideous things to each other. Francine is the glue that holds the tenable parts of the family together.

With its expressive crags, Willem Dafoe’s face has been unmistakable since the days of “Platoon” and “The Last Temptation of Christ.” However, with more recent supporting roles in multiple “Spider-Man” movies and “Aquaman,” he’s noticed a different response when people spot him in public.
“I’ll run into people sometimes who say, ‘You don’t make movies anymore?’” he said over breakfast in the West Village. “It’s embarrassing. They look at you like, ‘Poor guy! You really had something going and it’s not happening for you anymore.’”
In truth, movies happen for Dafoe faster than ever. This former experimental theater performer almost never stops working, garnering four Oscar nominations. But he tackles so many varied projects — ranging from superhero universes to microbudget biopics like Abel Ferrara’s “Pasolini” — that it’s often hard to see the big picture. With a tireless work ethic and near-unmatched pliability,...

Abigail Breslin is sure turning into a genre actress lately. It seems like after Zombieland, I’ve seen her in more & more genre films like Haunter, The Call and Maggie. She is also going to appear on Fox’s upcoming genre television show, “Scream Queens”.
Final Girl is a film that I believe I saw a promo trailer earlier this year or maybe even last year and thought it looked interesting. The story also comes from Stephen Scarlata, who was one of the producers of the wonderful documentary, Jodorowsky’s Dune. He is also one of the co-writers of the upcoming VHS Horror Board Game film, Beyond the Gates.

Move over Paper Magazine critic Dennis Dermody, there's another New York critic even more cranky and contrarian, and he's been doing it for years. That's right, Melissa McCarthy's biggest fan, Rex Reed of the New York Observer, has weighed in on his worst films of 2013, and usual, he's running hard against the tide. Two of the most celebrated films of the fall season—the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" and Spike Jonze's "Her"—make the list, and so too does Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers," but let's face it, there's no way Reed was going to like that movie anyway. Terrence Malick tops the list with his admittedly divisive "To the Wonder," while Reed pours another one out for McCarthy with "Identity Thief" making the ranks too. But credit to Reed—we're glad someone else is realizing how truly awful "Charlie Countryman" is. Check out the full list...

While we’re mostly celebratory around these parts, a considerable aspect of our year-end cinematic reflections has been dredging up those unspeakable films long since forgotten for one final verdict—think “Violet and Daisy,” “I Give It A Year," or “The Big Wedding." We compiled our 20 favorite abominations here, but elsewhere head film critic of Paper Magazine Dennis Dermody has aimed for more awards-centric fare with his list, and ended up with director Steve McQueen’s work in his sights. Following a list of 2013’s best offerings that included “Inside Llewyn Davis," “Blue Jasmine," and “Spring Breakers," Dermody then shared up his rundown of the ten worst. And right at the top? “12 Years A Slave," with the critic calling the film “well-acted, well-made, and virtually critic-proof. It's also torture to sit through. Slavery was horrendous. You think?“ Now, a negative opinion on McQueen’s film is nothing new, and even...
