Happy almost 2019, dear readers! The holiday season is nearly over, but rather than let that get you down, why not indulge in some great horror movies coming our way over the next few months? Usually, the winter season of genre releases can be something of a mixed bag in terms of quality, but there some impressive projects coming out in the next few months that have me extremely excited as a horror fan. The two films that are my most anticipated are (of course) Us from Jordan Peele and Christopher Landon’s sequel Happy Death Day 2U, but I’m also very intrigued by what I’ve seen from films like Greta, Glass, Braid, Captive State, and Escape Room so far, and am really looking forward to seeing how those stories come together onscreen as well.
We also have a new sci-fi movie featuring Keanu Reeves getting released in the coming months,...

"Do you think that a man's demons can be passed down to his son?" Breaking Glass Pictures has released the first official trailer for Beyond the Night, a mysterious thriller set in a small coal mining town. The film premiered at the Woodstock and Austin Film Festivals earlier this year, and is getting a small release in January. When a soldier's son reveals damning information about a local gangster's missing daughter, a war of attrition wreaks havoc on their forgotten mining town. Jason Noto's Beyond the Night stars Zane Holtz, with Tammy Blanchard, Azhy Robertson, Caitlin Mehner, Chance Kelly, David Fierro, Enid Graham, and Neal Huff. There seems to be some kind of supernatural element to this, but it's a bit more subtle than most horror films. I really enjoy the moody atmosphere of this, I'm quite curious about the film. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jason Noto's Beyond the Night,...

“You’re carrying around some old man on your shoulders. Some demon’s got you deep in its clutches. He’ll follow you to the end.” For Max Bornstein, the end could come prematurely, as his heroin addiction, withholding of secrets from his family, and illegal dealings within the pornography industry take a terrible toll on his body and mind in Dynamite: A Cautionary Tale.
Set in 1970’s-era New York City, Dynamite: A Cautionary Tale is based on a true story. With production successfully wrapped on the film, and an Indiegogo campaign recently launched to aid in the post-production process, we caught up with director Tate Steinsiek to discuss being drawn to Max’s real life story, shooting a period piece during the winter in New York City, transitioning from makeup effects work to the director’s chair, and much more.

It wouldn’t be a proper festival if there wasn't at least one film that I just didn’t enjoy. In truth, that’s partially why festivals are always so exciting: There’s an element of surprise inherent to each screening. Unfortunately, Vegetarian Cannibal is one of the bad surprises of Fantastic Fest. From the reactions of everyone in the theater (including one man who fell asleep), I’m guessing this wasn’t a positive experience for most. While I enjoy challenging films with difficult subject matter, I don’t enjoy boring ones, and Vegetarian Cannibal is really only challenging because of how much I wanted to leave my seat.
Vegetarian Cannibal does have an interesting premise, but unfortunately it just does not follow through. In Croatia, Dr. Danko Babic (Rene Bitorajac), a gynecologist hired to perform illegal abortions for prostitutes in the mafia,...

From my experience, horror films are always the most interesting but least attended films at smaller film festivals as festival audiences seem to be more interested in stories about losing your virginity than werewolves and zombies. However, two venues in Telluride, Colorado hope to serve that small group of dedicated art-house horror fans with three days of horror films from around the world at the 3rd annual Telluride Horror Show.

I wish I had the chance to interview more compatriot composers here, but fact is there are very few Hungarian film composers I could talk to. Adam Balazs is one of them - although he lives in Los Angeles, he recently completed his first score to a Hungarian movie: Szíven szúrt ország is a documentary about the murder of a handball player whose tragic death brought forward many unresolved issues within the country. In addition to this new documentary, Ádám's new movie The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations will have a soundtrack CD released pretty soon, which is a first for the composer (although several of his scores are available through download options). We discussed these and a number of other projects in the following interview:
How did your interest in music begin?
I grew up in a fully musical environment — my father is a distinguished classical composer and before her retirement,...

At the Los Angeles Screamfest last year, one short film stunned us with its look, atmosphere and shocking approach. That was Rory Kindersley and Jason Noto's Butchers Hill . After watching it, it came as no surprise that Kindersley and Noto were using the short as a platform to get a feature film made. And we're all for it. MonteCristo International is behind them in the effort and an official synopsis has been made public. You'll find it below along with a trailer for the short film. After their father charmingly runs off with the family fortune and a man called Brian, Ben and Jenny move from Manhattan to a flyspeck town in New England with their mother, Susanne. The town is characterized by three things: a history of witchcraft and religious slaughter, a slew of missing...

New England in 1699, a boy and a girl and a big wooden house in the woods. Beautifully shot in pastels and muted colors. Butcher's Hill is a simple story, brilliantly executed, with a wonderfully bloody and unhappy ending. I loved it.
The children dare to enter the inviting empty house and in the kitchen, there's a table overflowing with delicious sugar sprinkled cakes and pastries. The hungry kids plow in. Hello Hansel and Gretel. There's a cauldron boiling on the kitchen fire and that witch has got to be somewhere. It's about now that the little girl discovers something like the end of a human finger in her jam pastry. Mmm.

A brief summary of my response to the trailer for Jason Noto and Rory Kindersley’s Butcher’s Hill. “Not bad, nicely shot. Nice design work. Oh, there are the sketches for the feature version. Uh, oh, getting a bit cutesy. Oh My God, I Can’T Believe They Just Did That!”
Heh. Yeah, it ends well.
A chance encounter with the directorial duo at Fantasia left a very good impression, as did the simple fact that they had the good taste to have their poster art done by the same crew that handled Pan’s Labyrinth and that impression was more than borne out by the trailer for their newest short. It’s meant as a pitch device for a feature version based on the same concept and it’s certainly going to get people talking. Check out the trailer below the break.

It's all about presentation and Jason Noto is on top of his game promoting his screenplay Butcher's Hill. Over at the official website for the film, you can check out a sweet promo trailer for the film, which will help get the project off the ground. The last time I saw something like this was for Adam Green's Hatchet, which ended up being a cult classic legend. Like I said, it's all about presentation and other indie filmmakers might want to take a lesson from Mr. Noto here who tells us, "The script is being considered this week by Clive Barker and his company Seraphim Films."...
