Omar Sharif Jr. got early career advice from his celebrated grandfather, the legendary Hollywood actor Omar Sharif best known for his Golden Globe-winning performances in 1962’s “Lawrence of Arabia” and the title role in 1965’s “Dr. Zhivago”: Acting is not enough.
“My grandfather used to always say there’s nothing more boring than being an actor,” the 38-year-old Sharif told TheWrap with a chuckle. “Later on in his life, he used to take roles just literally to pay off gambling debts. It wasn’t for anything else. It was to cover costs at the racetrack.”
Despite his grandfather’s words, Omar Sharif Jr. did become an actor — and he recently joined the cast of the long-running Israeli rom-com series “Beauty and the Baker.” But being a performer is indeed not enough for the younger Sharif, who has been an outspoken LGBTQ activist since famously coming out as gay in...

ABC has canceled The Baker and the Beauty. The hourlong romantic comedy-drama, based on the hit Israeli format, was one of two freshman series left on the bubble by ABC after it made the bulk of its renewals and cancellations last month. The other, drama For Life, has been renewed.
Tipped as comfort-food fare that could be a good programming fit during the pandemic, The Baker and the Beauty had a tough time connecting with viewers, ranking as one of the ABC’s lowest-rated series. Its nine-episode freshman season run wrapped on June 1.

“For Life” has been renewed for a second season at ABC, Variety has learned, while “The Baker and the Beauty” has been canceled after one season.
Inspired by the life of Isaac Wright Jr., “For Life” is a fictional serialized drama about an imprisoned man, Aaron Wallace (Nicholas Pinnock), who becomes a lawyer litigating cases for other inmates while fighting to overturn his own life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit.
“It has been a profound honor working with Isaac Wright, Jr. and Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson to create a show that, through the prism of Isaac’s experience in our broken criminal justice system, has been able to highlight the racial inequality that plagues this country,” said series creator Hank Steinberg. “The show’s renewal will allow us to continue to do that and I am extremely grateful to Sony Pictures Television and ABC for all of their support.

“2025,” the splashy new Israeli reality TV show touted by Keshet for months, has sunk in the ratings to a new low in just its third week on air.
The show premiered in early February to a 21.1% share of the Israeli viewership, a disappointing figure for an original reality series – and one that Keshet spent tens of millions of shekels to produce. By contrast, the third season of Israel’s “Celebrity Big Brother” premiered on rival network Reshet in January with a 27.4% share.
After its Feb. 10 bow, ratings for “2025” hovered around 15% before dropping further in recent days, and Keshet decided to cut back on the show’s primetime episodes, from four times a week to three. For Monday evening’s installment, the network brought in two of Israel’s most popular TV hosts, Assi Azar and Rotem Sela, to run a challenge for the contestants. The Baker and the Beauty, which had a put pilot commitment, tells the story of the unlikely romance between a blue-collar baker and an international superstar.
This is the second time in three years that Georgaris has written two projects that have both gone to pilot the same season. He also has legal drama pilot Bluff City Law at NBC. In 2017, he also had one pilot at NBC and one at ABC: The Brave at NBC, which went to series, and Las Reinas at ABC.
Written by Georgaris and to be directed by Frankel, The Baker and the Beauty marks the second ABC pilot based on an Israeli format this season, joining romantic drama Until the Wedding.
