From what lies in the cellar to what waits in the woods, there are many scary things in Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, but one of the film’s most unsettling elements is Joseph LoDuca’s score. On October 25th, the Up orchestra will bring that score to life in Los Angeles with a live performance of the movie’s music at a special screening of The Evil Dead hosted by Ash himself, the groovy Bruce Campbell.
Also in attendance at The Evil Dead screening will be composer Joseph LoDuca, who will have the treat of seeing a live performance of his score accompany the scares onscreen:

Welcome any and all who have ever worked retail, or any job that deals with the general public. Have you ever just had one of those days where you need to scream, but are resigned to a fist-clenched ride home? It may be such a cliche thing to say, but as with all who have done anything from a day to multiple years with The General Public know, there’s certain things we need to get off our collective chests.
With the likes of Halloween generating evermore frenetically apocalyptic scenes of public consumption, the lead-up to Christmas is surely to be just as mental, and so as something of a cleanse I’ve compiled a list of Customer Types that, if you’ve ever encountered, crop up with increasing annoyance this time of year.
What follows is a steaming pile of passionate vitriolic rambling, but it’s all in good fun.

The latest film from "Tokyo Sonata" director Kiyoshi Kurosawa, "Real," which had its premiere at Locarno, will be a part of the New York Film Festival main slate. Read More: Locarno Film Festival Review: Kiyoshi Kurosawa's 'Real' Wanders Through a Comatose Mind The synopsis of the film, from the Film Society of Lincoln Center: "A star manga artist (Haruka Ayase) is in a coma, the result perhaps of a suicide attempt. In an experimental medical procedure, her husband (Takeru Satô) enters her unconscious in an attempt to awaken her. But when one psyche merges with another, mirror opposites are the possible, troubling result. A haunting successor to the mother of all time travel films, Chris Marker’s La JETÉE, with a tip of the hat to Bong Joon-ho’s The Host, Real finds its mysteries in the ordinary. What does it mean to be coupled? Can love conquer death?...

The 51st New York Film Festival, running September 30th – October 13th, is underway and news that Ben Stiller’s ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ will make its world premiere as the festival’s Centerpiece Gala was just released. Ben Stiller has this to say about the premiere, “I am incredibly honored and excited to have The Secret Life Of Walter
Mitty premiere in the New York Film Festival. When I first heard, I wanted to make sure it was the one at Lincoln Center and not one in Utica or somewhere. Making this film has been a wonderful collaboration with a really special screenwriter, Steve Conrad, and all the extremely talented cast and crew who worked on this movie. Having grown up a few blocks away on Riverside Drive, I couldn’t be happier to have it premiere here.”

It seems as though the fall festivals are going grander this year, with Rian Johnson‘s sci-fi drama Looper set to open Toronto, and now we have the Film Society of Lincoln Center announcing that Ang Lee‘s big-budget adaptation of Life of Pi will open their 50th New York Film Festival. We learned at the end of last week that Paramount’s Flight would take the closing slot, so it seems that this festival will be book-ended by two of fall’s major features.
It also marks one of the few times in the last decade where the opening film will actually be a world premiere, with last year’s Carnage already bowing at Venice. Only time will tell if Life of Pi repeat The Social Network level success, with that Nyff opener going on for major awards play, but it’s a promising first step for Lee’s latest.

Before we get to the beginning, we have to start at the end. For their 50th iteration of the New York Film Festival, the Film Society of Lincoln Center has decided on an unexpected choice for a closing film. Opening in early November theatrically, they’ve went with Robert Zemeckis‘ drama Flight. Starring Denzel Washington as a pilot with a history of alcoholism, the major studio picture is an odd choice, but at least it wasn’t as unfitting as Tribeca’s closer this year, The Avengers. Could this signal some awards prospects for Zemeckis’ return to live-action? We’ll have to wait a few months to find out, but check back for the full line-up and read the press release below.

What's old is new again, but did The English Beat ever go out of style? Shout! Factory is releasing the popular '80s Brit band's entire catalog (plus previously unreleased nuggets) in a new box set, The Complete Beat, out July 10, and co-founding member Dave Wakeling took time to talk to me about the timeless sound of the band, why they broke up, his jealousy over the success of Fine Young Cannibals, and the ultimate fan concert he hopes to stage.
"The Beat finished when it was meant to. We promised each other that if it ever became incredibly hard work, or we felt like we were going through the motions, or we felt we were doing anything that we didn't want to do, [that would be it]," Wakeling, now 56, said before a recent live gig in Aspen, Co. And now, they’re trying to shove a 3-D concert movie down our throats.

Ceremony, the new comedy from director Max Winkler (son of Henry), sounds like a complicated story. Sam Davis (Michael Angarano) gets his former best friend to accompany him to a beachfront getaway owned by a famous documentary maker (Lee Pace). The plan is for the two to rekindle their friendship, but along the way, it is discovered that Sam is infatuated with the filmmaker’s fiancée, Zoe (Uma Thurman). His ultimate goal is to stop their wedding and win Zoe. Lakeshore Records is releasing the soundtrack, and if the description above didn’t sell you, neither will the album.
I was left really unimpressed with the soundtrack as a whole. The majority of the album is a score by Eric D. Johnson (not the Eric Johnson I would have hoped for), front man for the indie rock band Fruit Bats. His score is unoriginal and frankly, unimaginative. While not entirely without merit,...

The New York African Film Festival begins Today New Yorkers, and the 2011 lineup is an impressive one!
Of note, several films that have been touted on this website (old and new) are scheduled to screen at this year’s festival, including, Andrew Dosunmu’s feature film directorial debut and Sundance 2011 entry, Restless City, in what I believe will be the film’s New York city premiere! I saw the film in January, and found it enchanting. You can read my full review of it Here.
Also, Congolese filmmaker Djo Tunda Wa Munga’s explosive Viva Riva!, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last fall, and swept the African Movie Academy Awards; a film that’s being referred to as “Congolese Avant-Garde.” I saw it a couple of weeks ago, and dug it! Read me review Here.

Hollywoodnews.com: Harry Potter fans, your ticket to Hogwarts has just arrived.
Ok, so it isn’t the real wizarding school, but “Harry Potter: The Exhibition” at Discovery Times Square might be the closest you’ll get to seeing J.K. Rowling’s magical world without deducing how to dive into the pages of a novel using some form of Dark Arts.
The exhibit, located off New York City’s Times Square, holds its Grand Opening today, April 5, and will run through Sept. 5. Organizers have said this is the exhibition’s final North American destination before traveling internationally.

Now that much of ABC's Dancing with the Stars program hullabaloo has died down, the underbelly of this beast warrants some close examination. If you were alive and conscious during November, you couldn't help but hear something of the controversy, about which even the most casual of observers offered 2 cents of opinions. This show was so mired in controversy, it lead one man to shoot his television set. Ratings bonanza? Perfect score of 10. Show maintaining credibility? Zero.
And here's why: underneath all of the backlash, commentaries and debates that polarized some 20 million viewers, it seems that the heart of the problem can be traced to Dwts' unwillingness to officially define itself. It's clear that the media and fan chaos stemmed in part from the fact that there is no straightforward definition of what this show is, or a position on how winners should be determined. The show needs to define itself in three ways.

It's hard to remember it now, but there was a time when Donnie, Danny, Jordan, Jonathan, Joey, A.J., Brian, Nick and Howie ruled the world. In their prime (roughly 1984-2000), the members of the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block ruled the teen pop world. That explains why the news about their blockbuster joint tour has set hearts aflutter across the popscape. And though some of their vocals were rough trade at points during Sunday night's (November 21) American Music Awards TV debut, the energy, dance moves and magnetic pull of the respective bands' greatest hits were undeniable.
But that's not what excited me.
See, I'm a word guy, and nothing delights me more than clever wordplay (which might explain why we speak almost exclusively in "Runny Babbit" language in our house) and I suspect that the clever accountant who realized that these two group's names combined made...

HollywoodNews.com: Are the Hamptons still hot? Oh yes, indeed. So hot that I actually missed Denise Rich’s cocktail party to celebrate her coming fall extravaganza for her Gabrielle’s Angels Ball. (Denise, we’ll be there in October.) The reason? The sudden booking of the great UK 80s band The English Beat at Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett. Dave Wakeling, founder of The Beat (they were renamed such because an American group beat them to the name), wrote some of the catchiest and most alluring pop-reggae records of the early 80s. Academy Award-winning Davis portrayed strong female characters in films like Thelma & Louise and A League of Their Own and broke ground with her portrayal of the country's first woman president on television's Commander in Chief, but her advocacy for women and girls doesn't end on screen.
Five years ago, while watching children's television shows and videos with her young daughter, Davis was struck by the paucity of female characters, inspiring her to create the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which focuses on boosting the presence of female characters in movies, TV, and other media aimed at young children, battling stereotypes, and functioning as a research resource on gender issues for the entertainment industry as a whole...

Ten brains are better than one, right? Crowdsourcing will always make projects go faster. That's why The Energy Crowd, a crowd-sourced based Web site for renewable energy technologies, is moving so quickly with its first project.
The Energy Crowd Web site has collectively designed a passive solar system less than a month after announcing plans to reduce the cost of home heating by using technology that captures and stores energy from a sustainable source.
The system, designed to convert sunlight into heat during the winter, uses Pilkington's energy-efficient glazing along with Manrose domestic ventilation equipment. The passive solar system also uses a chimney to avoid over-glazing--a major problem for most passive solar systems.
Once The Energy Crowd's technology is ready to be commercialized, it will be made available via a General Public License (Gpl) like the one that covers Linux use in the technology sector.
