Exclusive: The British government has blocked a woman of color from being appointed to Channel 4’s board for a third time, raising further questions about ministers meddling in media appointments.
TV regulator Ofcom recruits Channel 4 board members, but preferred candidates must be signed off by culture secretary Lucy Frazer. Rozina Breen, the BBC’s former head of north, was put forward by Ofcom, but ministers rejected her appointment without providing reasons for the decision.
Deadline can reveal the veto after Channel 4 chairman Ian Cheshire appeared to criticize the diversity of five new board members approved by the government on Monday. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (Dcms) said it was committed to “advancing equality” in public appointments.
Breen, now CEO and editor-in-chief of The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, praised the six-month recruitment process run by Ofcom, but was concerned by the approach taken by ministers.

1497 has selected three finalist for their Features Lab.
The Lab’s first year was held virtually, and the second year was hybrid, held virtually and in-person. For its third year, 1497 is conducting the Lab as an in-person, immersive, artistic retreat in Malibu, California, during which each Mentee will be paired with a pod of four Mentors from whom they will receive script feedback and career guidance. Mentees will also work with filmmaker and veteran script consultant Adrienne Weiss to further develop their scripts, with a particular emphasis on the emotional journey of their stories.
“We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: we started the 1497 Features Lab to empower writers in the South Asian diaspora to tell whatever stories they want to tell, regardless of the societal, industry, or stereotypical expectations that so often confine writers in our community to certain genres and cultural storylines,” Ahmed, Khan,...

Exclusive: Channel 4 may have escaped privatization, but in at least one respect it remains at the mercy of ministers.
The UK commercial broadcaster is waiting on the government to approve the hire of four new board members after a recruitment process that has dragged on for almost a year.
People close to the process hope it will be resolved soon amid pressure to inject diversity into a Channel 4 non-executive team that has been all-white since January 2022.
Ofcom, which oversees the recruitment of Channel 4 board members, engaged headhunters last October to search for four non-executive directors, but the process has been repeatedly delayed and ministers are still yet to rubber stamp preferred candidates.
The government first asked Ofcom to pause the board hires last December as the sale of Channel 4 was ditched after Rishi Sunak became the UK’s fifth prime minister in six years.

1497 has revealed the finalists of its third annual Features Lab. See their bios below.
The lab is designed to elevate and develop screenplays by writers of South Asian descent, while providing career support. It aims to empower writers in the South Asian diaspora to write whatever stories they feel compelled to tell, unbounded by genre, cultural content, geographic location, or any other stereotypical expectation.
Established in 2020 by Adeel Ahmed, Lipica Shah, and Kamran Khan, 1497 has been steadfast in its commitment to championing and empowering South Asian talent, countering their historical marginalization and year preceding colonization in what is now recognized as South Asia.
Sponsored by Final Draft, the 2023 Features Lab will guide three Mentees through a comprehensive, multi-tiered journey during a five-day retreat in Malibu. This transformative process will begin with working with Sundance filmmaker and seasoned script consultant Adrienne Weiss, to bolster the refinement of their feature film scripts.

The influence of streaming companies was a central topic of the Women in Leadership panel at the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival this past weekend.
The lengthy and wide-ranging session was hosted by journalist and Deadline critic Anna Smith of the Girls On Film Podcast with executives Kirsten Niehuus (Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg), Lee Broda (Vice Lb Entertainment), Teresa Fernández-Valdés (Bambú Producciones), and Uzma Hasan (Little House Production) digging into their experiences as women in the industry and finding new opportunities to create.

Director Asif Kapadia makes slick work of Akram Khan’s ballet in Creature, which world premiered at the BFI London Film Festival. Based on Khan’s original concept and choreography, the English National Ballet Production is produced by Uzma Hasan for Little House Productions, and brings an intense cinematic sensibility to the bleak story exploring power, nature, connection and more.
Taking center stage as the Creature is the extraordinary Jeffrey Cirio, who went on to star in the stage production which was delayed due to the pandemic. He twists and slinks across the set with a performance that’s both animalistic and tenderly humane. The setting is a former Arctic research station, where Creature has been brought to be experimented upon by a Doctor (Stina Quagebeur). A cleaner, Marie (Erina Takahashi), catches his eye, and also that of the Major (Fabian Reimair), a stern presence in a swooshing military coat.

Screen canvasses industry opinion on Langan’s tenure and the prospects for one of the UK’s cornerstone funders.

Attention is also now beginning to turn to who is likely to be her successor and what plans the BBC has for its film arm in the long run.
“Christine leaves BBC Films in good shape,” commented producer Stewart Mackinnon of Headline Pictures, who worked with the broadcaster’s film arm on titles including Quartet and The Invisible Woman, among other projects.
Pride producer David Livingstone noted Langan’s “incisiveness.”
“The thing I remember particularly about Christine is her giving very good notes about the final editing of the film (Pride). She was very clear and very precise, and with a light hand on the tiller,” Livingstone said.
