“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” returned for its second season on NBC this year with more relationship drama and long-take musical numbers than ever. The comedy-drama stars Jane Levy as Zoey Clarke, a manager at a big tech firm who suddenly develops the power of knowing people’s innermost feelings, as expressed through musical performances. This leads to some awkward encounters but also heartening moments as Zoey guides her friends and family to express how they truly feel. Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with nine Emmy contenders from the series.
The series also delves into the personal and professional lives of those friends and family, including Max (Skylar Astin), Zoey’s coworker and friend who harbors a secret crush and Simon (John Clarence Stewart), another co-worker who finds kinship with Zoey. In Season 2, both turn into lovers for Zoey as she tries to figure out who she is and what she wants in life.

In March 1971, Aretha Franklin took the stage at the Fillmore West in San Francisco to deliver a concert that was then turned into the Queen of Soul’s third live album. Video footage from that concert is in black and white and grainy at best, due to the technology available at the time. For the fifth episode of National Geographic’s “Genius: Aretha,” though, the talented artisans behind the limited series brought Franklin’s (played by Cynthia Erivo) vibrant voice to life in equally bright colors and textures with a recreation of her cover of Diana Ross’ “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand).”

Music supervisor Jen Ross has worked on a number of music-themed series in her career, including “Smash,” “Empire” and “Soundtrack,” but few compare to the amount of work necessary for “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.” The show is driven by Zoey’s ability to hear people’s “heart songs,” of which we hear at least four and as many as nine in a given episode. Ross is tasked with securing music rights to all of them under a tight network TV schedule, and it’s far from easy. “‘Zoey’s’ is a very specific beast unto itself,” says Ross in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “It’s really a constant interesting game of how do you get everything done in the time and not compromise any of the creative storyline and any of the narrative.” Watch the full webchat above.

Recording Academy President Harvey Mason Jr. is also the executive music producer for “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” recording multiple covers of established songs for each and every episode. While there wasn’t a huge change in production from Season 1 to Season 2, he explains in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby that he and the rest of the crew asked themselves a series of questions: “How are we gonna take it up another level? How are we gonna improve what we’re doing? How are we going to find new uses for the music and new ways to use the cast?” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

After a season of watching Clarke family patriarch Mitch (Peter Gallagher) decline due to progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) in “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” viewers saw him pass away in the finale. The titular Zoey (Jane Levy) developed the ability to hear people’s inner feelings as musical numbers at the start of the series, and after her father dies, that power shows her entire remaining nuclear family and close group of friends and colleagues singing “American Pie” post-funeral, in the final act of the episode. The scene starts out in the daytime as the Clarkes return to their house, where dozens of loved ones are waiting to pay their respects. In one continuous shot, the camera travels throughout the rooms, as different characters pick up different lyrics and crew members seamlessly move set dressing and props out of frame. Time passes, moving into night, and it ultimately ends on Zoey as...

Oh, sure. You could encourage girls to be scientists, astronauts, or superheroes with healthy self-esteem, intelligence, and a belief that they could do anything they darn well wanted. Or you can just remind them that all they really want is boys, and the most important thing in life is snagging yourself a man.
Unfortunately, United Artists is opting for the latter. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they've optioned Pamela Wells' debut novel The Heartbreakers, which will be retitled Rules of Dating for Teenage Girls. Jennifer Ross is currently attached to pen the script.
UA is insisting the story is one of Girl Power, a coming-of-age comedy that centers on four girls who are dumped by their boyfriends on the same day. Tired of boys and their shenanigans, the girls devise a set of rules they're sure will snag any guy, and prevent break-ups and heartache.

Film studio United Artists is set to develop a new girl-oriented project based on the popular young-adult novel by Pamela Wells, "The Heartbreakers."
Renamed "Rules of Dating for Teenage Girls," the film will center on four best friends and their on-and-off relationships with boys. After several of the girls are dumped, they set up a set of rules that they believe will snag any man and prevent future heartaches.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer Ross is in talks to pen the screenplay, with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas tapped to produce.
Author Wells followed 2007 novel with "Crushes," which focused on many of the same characters in "Heartbreakers" and was released in 2008.
