There’s no doubting that Keegan-Michael Key is a funny guy, as he’s proven on the Emmy-winning Comedy Central sketch series Key & Peele and with scene-stealing roles in everything from Pitch Perfect 2 to the first season of Fargo on FX.
But after Key & Peele came to an end in 2015, Key says he purposefully sought out work that would take him as far away from the sketch comedy world, which, also thanks to his years on MadTV, had defined much of his career up until that point. “I felt like we had done almost as much as we could do with the form,” he tells Et, and he was ready to set his career on a new course with roles that tapped into his classical training.
The first sign of that transition came in 2016 with Don’t Think Twice, a dramedy about standup comedians, and then a leading role as Ethan on Netflix’s Friends From College. But it was...

Revivals and adaptations; comedies and dramas; legends and professional debuts: The new Broadway season will be an eclectic grab bag for theater-goers of every inclination. “Meteor Shower”Following his Tony-nominated bluegrass musical “Bright Star,” Steve Martin makes another foray to the Great White Way, this time with absurdist play “Meteor Shower.” Under the direction of Tony winner Jerry Zaks (“Hello, Dolly!”), the comedy—which received two out-of-town tryouts in San Diego and Connecticut—will see a triumphant return to the boards for Tony winner Laura Benanti as well as Alan Tudyk, and Broadway debuts for two of today’s most prolific industry names: Emmy winners Keegan-Michael Key and Amy Schumer. Previews begin at the Booth Theatre Nov. 1. “Frozen”Given the unprecedented success of Disney’s animated hit “Frozen,” it’s unsurprising the franchise worked with hyper-speed to rev up a stage production. But audiences shouldn’t expect an exact replica...

This being my first post on Age of the Nerd, I feel a slight need to introduce myself before I introduce this hopefully continuous and long-running feature here. I’m David Baruffi, and years ago, I created something called ‘Canon Of Film‘. Well, “Created” is pushing it, I know I’m not the only or first, or thousandth person who’s ever decided that writing a bunch of short essays about particular movies, but my intention behind the list was far more personal.
This origins of this list started innocently enough, I was simply trying to make a short list of films to recommend to a friend of mine. I was still going to my local Community College at the time, and had not yet decided to become a film major, but was beginning to lean in that direction. Anyway, I made a short list of what were at the...

One of the biggest events in theater this fall will be Steve Martin’s venture back to Broadway with his play, “Meteor Shower.” The comedy will star Amy Schumer in her Broadway debut—and maybe you, too! Equity Principal Auditions will be held in New York City Sept. 8 for actors to understudy the four leading roles that, in addition to Schumer, will be played by Tony winner Laura Benanti, Keegan-Michael Key, and Alan Tudyk. Accompanying Martin, the robust creative team includes David Caparelliotis on the casting front and Jerry Zaks (“Hello, Dolly!”) helming as director. Joey Parnes, whom Martin previously collaborated with on his last Broadway project “Bright Star,” will be producing. The play, set during a meteor shower on one early 1990s evening, will begin rehearsals Sept. 25, with a first performance slated for Oct. 30. Opening night will be Nov. 29, with the run scheduled through Feb. 18, 2018 at the Booth Theatre.

• The Cut "I'm rooting for the Lannisters" fun piece on Game of Thrones (which I still read about on occasion even though I haven't watched since season 2)
• /Film Guillermo del Toro's official tequila looks like it's from one of his movies
• Vulture every Charlize Theron performance ranked. Interesting list though I quibble with the order (as they seem to equate the quality of the movies with the quality of her performance and Theron is precisely the star she is because she is often able to be good even in terrible pictures). Also Young Adult should be #1
• Playbill all star cast lined up for Steve Martin's next Broadway show (after his musical Bright Star), this one's a comedy called Meteor Shower
• Browbeat the internet goes wild for old Russ Tamblyn dancing clip from 1956
• Tracking Board Nicole Kidman is in talks to headline a crime thriller called Destroyer directed by Karyn Kusama.

Steve Martin is coming back to Broadway and he’s bringing with him a slate of A-list talent from all realms of the industry. Most notable is the comedian Amy Schumer, who won an Emmy Award in 2015 for her series “Inside Amy Schumer,” and will make her Broadway debut in Martin’s new comedy, “Meteor Shower.” But Schumer’s is not the only name that will surely sit atop the marquee’s title. The play, billed as “a marital comedy about two couples who get together for an evening of stargazing and sparring in an Ojai, California backyard in 1993,” will also star two-time Tony winner Laura Benanti, Keegan-Michael Key (currently performing in the Public Theater’s “Hamlet”), and Alan Tudyk (“Firefly”). Under the esteemed direction of Jerry Zaks, who was most recently at the helm of the “Hello, Dolly!” revival, “Meteor Shower” will bow on Broadway at the Booth Theater,...

The already-incredible line-up for the 2016 New York Film Festival just got even more promising. Ang Lee‘s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk will hold its world premiere at the festival on October 14th, the NY Times confirmed today. The adaptation of Ben Fountain‘s Iraq War novel, with a script by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire), follows a teenage soldier who survives a battle in Iraq and then is brought home for a victory lap before returning.
Lee has shot the film at 120 frames per second in 4K and native 3D, giving it unprecedented clarity for a feature film, which also means the screening will be held in a relatively small 300-seat theater at AMC Lincoln Square, one of the few with the technology to present it that way. While it’s expected that this Lincoln Square theater will play the film when it arrives in theaters, it may be...

Sarah Jessica Parker, the Emmy-winning actress and fashion maven, is 50 today. If you watched Carrie Bradshaw strut her way through her late '30s on HBO's "Sex and the City" and deal with the pangs of married life in the two subsequent feature releases, Sjp's 50th birthday feels like kind of a big deal. In your best Kim Cattrall voice, you coo, "I'll drink to that!" To celebrate, let's pick Sjp's most underrated role. My pick is below. "L.A. Story." 1991. Not nearly as watched anymore as it should be. Sjp's character SanDeE is one-of-a-kind, a loopy wannabe model whose space cadet antics are at once frustrating and lovable. "Home" is a true fish out of water story, if you sub in an alien and an alternate universe for the fish and the water.
The animated flick follows a banished alien named Oh (voiced by Jim Parsons), part of an alien race hiding on Earth from their mortal enemies and looking to make a new life on the planet. Unfortunately, Oh has accidentally tipped off his enemies to the aliens' location, and now, Earth is in danger.
He teams up with a resourceful girl named Tip (voiced by Rihanna) to try to save the day, though her exasperation with his alien powers coupled with his misunderstanding of the workings of the planet make for some high-stakes hijinks. There are also plenty of good gags involving Oh's reaction to everyday Earth events (he thinks Tip's purring cat is about to explode, and at one point exclaims while dancing, "My hands...

Looks like we wont have to wait as long to see the return of Dexter! Showtime has announced that the series will return to TV earlier than normal. Season 8 will premiere on June 30th at 9pm, and will serve as a lead-in for the cable networks new crime drama Ray Donovan. It was previously a lead in to Homeland. I've also heard that Season 8 will in also be the last season of the show, which is sad, but we knew it would eventually have to come to an end.
The early return of the series has not affected production on Dexter. Showtime entertainment president David Nevins said, “There is no less production time, just a little less vacation time between the seasons.” He also said that the drama’s producers and cast had received enough lead time to adjust to the scheduling changes.

On Sunday, during a telecast that saw host Russell Brand exclaiming "Twilight! Hunger Games!" multiple times throughout his monologue,...

Nashville, Tenn. -- It may be impossible to overstate the importance of bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs to American music. A pioneering banjo player who helped create modern country music, his sound is instantly recognizable and as intrinsically wrapped in the tapestry of the genre as Johnny Cash's baritone or Hank Williams' heartbreak.
Scruggs died Wednesday morning at age 88 of natural causes. The legacy he helped build with bandleader Bill Monroe, guitarist Lester Flatt and the rest of the Blue Grass Boys was evident all around Nashville, where he died in an area hospital. His string-bending, mind-blowing way of picking helped transform a regional sound into a national passion.
"It's not just bluegrass, it's American music," bluegrass fan turned country star Dierks Bentley said. "There's 17- or 18-year-old kids turning on today's country music and hearing that banjo and they have no idea where that came from. That sound...

Rock of Ages
Directed by: Adam Shankman
Starring: Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin
Rating: Not Yet Rated
Release Date: June 1, 2012
Trailer Score: 3/10
Thoughts by Tsr: I love musicals. I like rock and roll (generally speaking, at least). Throw in Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, and Paul Giamatti, and it might lead one to think that I’m totally psyched about Rock of Ages. Unfortunately the math doesn’t add up in this case. So what went wrong here? My first thought was that it’s because it doesn’t use original songs, but that doesn’t feel right because it’s inherent to the source. Besides, Moulin Rouge! uses pre-existing music, and it’s one of my favorite films. I’m left scratching my head.
While I’m not a fan of all the bands listed at the end, I can get on board with the opening song,...

No hat, but I'm not complaining.
Welcome back to Celebrity Twitterwatch, where we take a look at what the beautiful people are saying about their beautiful lives. It's kind of like a visiting a zoo, but with better decorators.
Harry Shum, Jr. was the toast of Glee this week, and that meant doing press. In the old days, he would have dressed up and met a publicist at the Beverly Hilton pool and seen a parade of journalists. Now, he rolls out of bed and gets dressed. Well, sort of. I'd like to think this is how he lives life generally. Every gentleman should wear a hat.
Speaking of media attention, comic and former MTV VJ Dave Holmes took time to note that in his passing, Steve Jobs had performed a selfless act and done the impossible: He pulled a spotlight away from Sarah Palin.

'Rejoice New York,' Lady Gaga tweeted. 'We did it!'

The Twitterverse was ablaze with every color of the rainbow Friday night as New York state became the sixth and most populous in the U.S. to allow gay marriage.
With the bill, which passed 33 to 29 in the State Senate in Albany, the Empire State joins Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Iowa and Washington D.C. in recognizing gay marriage in the United States.
The timing was fortuitous as New Yorkers observe Pride Week, a celebration of the diversity of the Lgbt community.
Lady Gaga, whose Lgbt advocacy has manifest well beyond her songwriting at speeches, rallies and appearances from San Francisco Pride in 2009 to the National Equality March in 2010, and the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards,...

Matthew Morrison definitely isn't preoccupied with the season finale of "Glee."
Just take his opening line in a same-day interview: "Oh. It's Tuesday, isn't it?"
Known to the countless fans of the Fox series as Lima, Ohio high-school teacher and glee-club adviser Will "Mr. Schue" Schuester, the Broadway veteran ("Hairspray") has a very full plate these days. His self-titled CD has just been released, and his summer concert tour includes nearly two dozen dates as a "special guest" of Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block.
Still, Morrison is very pleased with Tuesday's (May 24) second-year-ending "Glee" story that takes Mr. Schue to New York with his New Directions singers for the hugely anticipated Nationals competition. It also finds him mulling leaving William McKinley High School behind for the Great White Way with longtime acquaintance April Rhodes (Kristin Chenoweth's recurring character), a twist that has merged art and life for Morrison.

The Three Stooges just got another boost of comedic star power. Earlier this year, Glee star Jane Lynch signed on to Bobby and Peter Farrelly’s theatrical adaptation of the classic TV series.
Now, the Farrelly brothers are raising the bar on talent by adding Curb Your Enthusiasm funny man Larry David to the talent roster. Deadline reported that David would star as Mother Mengele, a character in charge of the orphanage that the stooges grow up in and “learn to create mayhem.”
It was previously reported that Lynch would play Mother Superior at an orphanage during the Stooges’ childhood. Needless to say, she’ll probably show up again when the Stooges are adults. Will she also serve as an adult rival to Mother Mengele? We’ll have to wait and find out, but it looks as though we’ll see a few motherly antics as well as tons of...

Ryan Murphy, the creator of Nip/Tuck and Glee, two shows that I flip-flop on liking and adoring, may have just crafted the spiritual successor to It’s Complicated.
By that, I don’t mean that Eat Pray Love descends into the same levels of farce and slapstick misery that Meryl Streep-starring disaster did. However, Murphy’s film (scripted by himself and writing partner Jennifer Salt) had me asking the same question that burrowed its way into my skull within the first twenty minutes: who is the audience for something like this? I answered this question as quickly as I had with It’s Complicated (solution: females who have experienced love and loss), just as I had moved on to the more difficult question I’d already faced: who can relate to this?
While Murphy’s creation is leaps and bounds above It’s Complicated, it still commits the same fatal errors.

HollywoodNews.com: Neil Patrick Harris, already nominated for 2010 Emmys for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series (How I Met Your Mother) and outstanding guest actor in a comedy series (Glee) has belatedly received a third Emmy nomination for hosting last year’s Tony Awards.
Awards expert Tom O’Neil who does the Gold Derby blog for the Los Angeles Times explains why the third nomination comes a little late: Harris’ name was missing from the list of Emmy nominees in the race for best special-class program when bids were unveiled last month. Hosts of award shows used to compete in the old Emmy category of best performance in a variety special (Hugh Jackman won for hosting the Tonys in 2005), but that contest was eliminated last year. Date Night Review | Thrice Better than Eating a Block of Cheese and Watching that Show About Midgets
The weirdest thing happened to me today. It's something that hasn't happened for months, maybe longer. I honestly don't even remember the last time it happened. It was bizarre. I was sitting in a movie theater, watching a studio comedy, and I was completely overcome by this unfamiliar sensation. I think it might have been happiness. I'm not sure, exactly, since it's been such a long time since I felt anything akin to that in a multiplex. But that odd sensation was accompanied by laughter. Real laughter. I laughed. Out loud. More than once. And it wasn't even at stuff I'd already seen in the trailers. When I left the theater, I wasn't hit by a wave of disappointment. I was in this oddly pleasant mood. I didn't know what to do with myself. I briefly considered running back into the theater and watching The Last Song again just so I could regain my equilibrium.

For once, the Oscars were a genuine nail-biter. Winning an Oscar has to be a flabbergasting experience. As the heavy lights beam down and a worldwide television audience awaits your every word, it must be near impossible to succinctly say what you intended to say. Luckily, there's the backstage press room, which provides Oscar winners a chance to thank those they forgot to mention and discuss at great length what the awards mean to them. Or, in the case of Sandra Bullock, it's an opportunity to reveal exactly what a Best Actress winner desires most after winning an Academy Award: "I just want a burger!" Twenty-four Oscars were handed out onstage last night.

My hopes are with Colin Firth and Carey Mulligan and I’m secretly hoping that Tarantino walks off with Best Picture for Inglourious Basterds and Coraline bests Up for Best Animated Feature.
Ok… the time is upon us. I’ll be updating the blog with the winners as I go, as well as providing as coherent a commentary as possible.

Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen has been named the Worst Picture of 2009 in this year's Razzies - the 30th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards - held last night in Hollywood in its traditional spot just before the Oscars.
The much-derided robot action adventure was up against G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Land of the Lost, Old Dogs and All About Steve, and took a total of three awards in the night of shame.
Sandra Bullock is pictured above at the ceremony after turning up to receive the Worst Actress gong for her role in All About Steve, which also earned her Worst Screen Couple along with the film's co-star Bradley Cooper.
Bullock vied for her dishonourable win with Beyonce (Obsessed), Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana: The Movie), Megan Fox (Jennifer's Body and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) and Sarah Jessica Parker (Did You Hear About the Morgans?).
