The long-running Fox animated comedy series "Bob's Burgers" is a little different than its channel mates "Family Guy" and "The Simpsons." Sure, all of these shows are animated comedies about a nuclear family consisting of a mom, dad, and their three children, but "Bob's Burgers" is as full of warm, fuzzy feelings as it is laughs. The writers on the series really know when to take a step back from the jokes and let the drama unfold, giving the characters quite a bit more depth than the average cartoon comedy. The misadventures of the Belcher family, who operate a burger joint in the fictional city of Seymour's Bay, are fiercely funny, but they're also full of a tremendous amount of heart. It's what sets "Bob's Burgers" apart, but according to series creator Loren Bouchard, at least one Fox executive just didn't seem to understand that.

Hulu is launching a new sub-brand focused on adult animation and anime called Animayhem, Variety has learned exclusively.
The new hub is meant to capitalize on Hulu’s already popular lineup of adult animation and anime shows. Series like “American Dad,” “Bob’s Burgers,” “Family Guy,” “Futurama” and “King of the Hill” consistently rank among the service’s top 10 shows based on hours streamed, per Hulu. So far this year, over one billion hours of adult animation content has been streamed on Hulu, along with over 288 million hours of anime content, the streamer claims.
“When you have the number one offering in adult animation and anime of any major streaming service, creating this destination is obvious. We know exactly where we can meet these fans, because they’re already here,” said Barrie Gruner, Hulu’s executive vice president of marketing and publicity, in an interview with Variety.

The initial exuberance and relief following Bob Iger’s return as Disney CEO has been replaced by anxiety as speculation about a pending corporate restructuring is intensifying — and with it, rumors about the layoffs that are likely to follow.
Rumblings of a new org-chart unveiling are growing louder amid mounting pressure on the company (including from activist investor Nelson Peltz) to stage a rebound with Iger back at the controls. Details on the restructuring moves, which could potentially include some sort of consolidation within the company’s marketing operations as well as at Disney Television Studios, are likely to emerge soon and could coincide with the company’s next quarterly earnings report February 8, sources tell Deadline.
And then there is the future of the Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution executive ranks.

Disney is the latest traditional media company to consolidate its content creation across streaming and linear as traditional media companies adjust to the streaming age.
Dana Walden, Chairman of Entertainment, Walt Disney Television, today unveiled a major restructure of the television production and original content businesses under her purview. The shakeup includes Hulu’s SVP content Craig Erwich adding oversight of ABC original content in a return to broadcast 13 years after he left the top programming post at Fox. He is being named President of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment.
He takes over responsibilities held by ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke who, after a successful tenure at the network, is taking on a big new role as President of 20th Television, the combined operation of 20th Television and Touchstone Television as the cable/streaming-focused studio is being folded into 20th TV. “Bob’s Burgers” will soon cross the 200-episode threshold, a milestone that a miniscule percentage of television shows ever achieve. For perspective, that puts it in league with such major hits as “Friends” and “The Office,” to name just a few.
Yet for the creative team behind the show, one of the most important things is remaining humble despite the years of success the series has enjoyed.
“Every single person that speaks to me either in person or online and says they like the show, I truly approach that person as if they’re a little miracle,” says creator and co-showrunner Loren Bouchard.
There are now millions of those little miracles, something that 20th Television’s executive vice president of animation Marci Proietto attributes to the creative team’s continued humility. Proietto has been a champion of the adult animated comedy that centers on the Belcher family and their hamburger restaurant from the start,...

A central premise of “Bob’s Burgers” is that the Belcher family always needs money. The irony is that the show itself has become the center of its own merchandise empire.
Among the branded items currently available from the show are its own set of Funko Pop figurines, a line of apparel available at multiple major retailers, a “Bob’s Burgers” custom Igloo cooler and a New York Times bestselling cookbook.
The show’s merchandise business was started by the creators themselves, rather than studio 20th Television. According to 20th TV executive vice president of animation Marci Proietto, who helped shepherd “Bob’s Burgers” through the development process, the studio’s consumer productions division “didn’t really pay much attention to us,” which led series creator Loren Bouchard to strike out on his own.
“Loren had done things with a small little company where we printed out T-shirts and we gave them away for free at Comic-Con,...

With their animated series Solar Opposites, Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan injected aliens into a world of mundane human squabbles, in hopes of turning a classic TV form on its head.
Starring Roiland, Thomas Middleditch and Andrew Daly, the series centers on a family of extraterrestrials who are forced to take refuge in Middle America, where they weigh the virtues of life on planet Earth.
Perhaps best known as two of the creatives behind Rick and Morty, Roiland and McMahan met years ago, and connected as friends. The idea for Solar Opposites would then emerge organically, as an extension of what they’d done with their aforementioned Emmy-winning series. “Justin and I have known each other since back during his development days, when I was an assistant for Jennifer Howell, when she was the head of animation at 20th TV. We had hit it off, and just from working together and knowing each other,...

Up until March, writer-director Jorge Gutiérrez was “someone who basically used to live at the office.” Since shifting to a work-from-home setup amid the pandemic, he has been able to have lunch with his wife and 10-year-old son every day, all the while continuing to work on his animated Netflix project “Maya and the Three,” a Mesoamerican epic that he likes to call “‘Lord of the Rings’ with brown people.”
“It’s weird — it’s almost like we’ve been training for this for years, and our time has finally come,” says Gutierrez. “We’re so used to working with studios all over the world, and a lot of times we work with artists all over the world. It’s a remote business and there are no sets — everybody’s drawing, and it all comes together on the computer. So we’re kind of set up for this.”

American Dad! is going to be around awhile longer. TBS has ordered two more seasons of Seth MacFarlane’s top-rated adult animated comedy, which will mark its milestone 300th episode this year. The renewal was announced Wednesday during Turner’s presentation at the TCA Winter Press Tour.
A consistent, solid ratings performer, American Dad!, from 20th Century Fox TV, ranks as a top 5 cable comedy, with the current season reaching an audience of nearly 18 million viewers across all TBS platforms, according to Nielsen.
Co-created by MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman, American Dad! centers on super-patriotic CIA agent Stan Smith (voiced by MacFarlane) and the misadventures of his unconventional family in Langley Falls, Va. Stan applies the same drastic measures used in his job at the CIA to his home life, where Stan’s blissfully unaware wife, Francine (Wendy Schaal), has an unfaltering loyalty that makes her blind to his unabashed arrogance.

“American Dad” will be on TBS for two more seasons, taking the Seth MacFarlane-created comedy through its 300th episode.
The series, which aired on Fox for its first 11 seasons, has been airing on TBS since 2014. It’s been a stable performer for the network with the current season averaging nearly 18 million viewers across all TBS platforms.
“‘American Dad!’ has achieved an incredible milestone,” said Brett Weitz, general manager for TNT, TBS, & truTV. “Matt and Brian are brilliant writers who consistently overdeliver on big comedy and even bigger absurdity. We look forward to continuing the momentum by giving devoted fans two more seasons of the Smith family.”

Exclusive: Prolific writing-producing duo Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit have signed a multi-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV. Under the pact, Hernandez and Samit will develop, write and produce animated and live-action series for network, cable and streaming platforms.
The deal brings Hernandez and Samit back to where their career began in 2013, on 20th TV-produced 1600 Penn.
“Dan and Benji are rising stars whom we’ve wanted to work with for years on the animation side, so the fact that they are making 20th their exclusive home is really exciting,” said Marci Proietto, Evp of Animation, 20th TV. “We love their enthusiasm, their creativity, their material and the fact that they immediately saw the potential to produce for so many different platforms under the Disney umbrella. They’ll start by reuniting with Josh Gad on Central Park as well as continue to develop projects of their own both in animation and live action.

“Wendy and Lizzie are hilarious writers who have had a long history with this studio and we are so glad this will now formally become their exclusive home,” said Jonnie Davis, president of creative affairs for 20th Century Fox Television. “They’ve been incredible contributors to our gem, Bob’s Burgers, Loren loves them and our head of animation Marci Proietto has been their champion, for good reason.
