It’s almost impossible to classify In & Of Itself, the one-man off-Broadway show that’s now an acclaimed movie on Hulu, and that’s kind of the point. Its star, Derek DelGaudio, is a magician of unusual skill, but the show, built around true stories from his life, employs illusion only in the service of a complex, often unsettling, nearly hypnotic exploration of human identity that tends to leave audiences in tears, even the ones watching at home. "My dad was a workaholic," Jim Henson's son Brian Henson exclusively told Closer Weekly without a hint of bitterness in the magazine's latest issue, on newstands now. "I have four siblings, and for us to see our father, we would spend a lot of time hanging out in his studios and his workshop." The Sesame Street and Muppet Show mastermind wasn’t neglecting his children; he was providing them with a powerful role model. "He always had so many ideas he felt like he needed to do," recalled Brian, 54. "My dad would always say, 'If something is not inspiring, then do something that is.' He was an inspiration to everyone." (Photo Credit: Getty Images) That includes Brian, who has taken up his father’s mantle as the chairman of the Jim Henson Company in Hollywood. It’s a childhood dream come true for Brian, who grew up playing with his dad’s Muppets.

New York — The Muppets may have taken Manhattan, but they're getting a spiffy new home in Queens.
Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Bert and Ernie of "Sesame Street" fame, the stars of "Fraggle Rock" and other puppets, costumes and items from throughout Muppets creator Jim Henson's career have been donated to the Museum of the Moving Image, which is building a new gallery to house them, the institution announced Tuesday.
Encompassing almost 400 items ranging from original puppets to behind-the-scenes footage, the gift is a boon for the 25-year-old museum, which saw attendance skyrocket during a temporary exhibit in 2011 and 2012 of Henson's work. And it fulfills a cherished goal for Henson's widow and collaborator, Jane Henson, who died last month at 78.

It’s a sad time in the entertainment realm as Muppets pioneer Jane Henson has passed away at the age of 78.
Following a “long battle with cancer,” the widow of Jim Henson died yesterday (April 2) leaving a long tradition of love and philanthropy.
According to a report, Jane met Jim at the University of Maryland when they both enrolled in the same puppetry class. They were married in 1959 and had five children.
And though they separated in 1986, Jane established the Jim Henson Legacy in 1992, following Henson’s 1990 death.
Jane also started the National Puppetry Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and the Jane Henson Foundation.
She would often say, “Jim wanted to leave the world a better place,” and friend Arthur Novell added, “Most would agree they both did.”...

Twenty years ago, Karen Falk was looking through a publication for museum professionals and saw a job listing for an archivist at The Jim Henson Company. At the time, she was working with museum clients at Christie's, but she was ready for a change of pace. Henson died in 1990, and shortly thereafter, his widow Jane Henson decided that the company needed to maintain its extensive collection of documents, puppets, films, video and ephemera. "I was a casual fan of Henson," Falk told Indiewire. "I loved 'The Muppet Show,' but I was a little old for 'Sesame Street.'" In addition to helping produce a graphic novel based on an unrealized script of Henson's, developing materials for DVD extras, and aiding a writer working on a definitive biography of the beloved icon, Falk is busy with her own book based on Henson's Red Book, "Imagination Illustrated: The Jim Henson Journal.

If you've read or seen any biographical material about the late Jim Henson, you probably know that the original Kermit the Frog was created out of his mother's old coat and two-halves of a ping-pong ball.
One of the first Muppets , Kermit (not yet a frog) became a regular face on Henson's Sam and Friends, a five-minute TV show that ran twice a day on Wrc-tv in Washington, DC. The series ran from May 1955 until December 1961.
Kermit has come a long way since then and looks quite a bit different today. The original Kermit puppet still exists though and has just been donated to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Kermit has returned to his old stomping grounds.

The incredibly prolific mind of Jim Henson (1936-1990) was a veritable celebration of ideas for wondrous creatures and characters, stories, songs, and imagery. From the earliest age, Henson drew pictures, wrote jokes, built mobiles, and planned whole worlds. He thought in three dimensions and experimented in a huge variety of media, both with still and moving images. He was fascinated with how ideas are formed, how they interconnect in the mind, and how they can be shared through the visual and performing arts.
Organised with The Jim Henson Legacy, Jim Henson's Fantastic World offers audiences a rare peek into the imagination of this brilliant innovator and creator of Kermit, Big Bird, and other beloved characters. The exhibition documents Henson’s process of “visual thinking” through works of art, photographs, documents, puppets and other 3-D objects, and film and video clips. Museums may create a separate activity center with the educational and interactive resources provided.

I miss Jim Henson. I recall sitting in my home office and hearing the stunning news that the puppeteer had unexpectedly passed away. All I could think of were the movies and television shows that we would never see, the voice of Kermit the Frog growing silent. As it is, every time the family watches the Muppet Christmas Special, I sigh at the end when he makes a cameo appearance.
Henson was a gentle, creative man, but in the documentary, Henson’s Place, he’s also described as a having a “steely will” and he needed that to bring his creations to life and before the public. The 52-minute show was produced for airing in Wales in 1984 and has played on PBS here in the states. Today, Lionsgate releases the documentary on DVD.
