If you caught the trailer that released for Atom Egoyan's Devil's Knot last Fall, a lot of the footage from the new one may seem familiar, however, this is most definitely a new cut and it includes almost half a minute of additional content, some of which focuses on how religion factors into the story, and some that focuses on Alessandro Nivola's character Terry Hobbs, the stepfather to one of the three child victims of the horrible murders in West Memphis Arkansas. Based on true events and the true crime book written by Mara Leveritt titled Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, the film is set in 1993 when three eight-year-old boys were brutally murdered and three teens were blamed for the crime. Reese Witherspoon plays Pamela Hobbs, wife to Terry Hobbs and mother of Stevie Branch, one of the three victims. As the trailer indicates,...

I can’t recall many films that have added as many actors over a short period as Devil’s Knot — it was, for God’s sake, just a few hours ago when the latest two people came aboard — and, finally, Atom Egoyan has begun to speak on his West Memphis 3 drama First, however, Variety informs us that Kevin Durand (Cosmopolis, Lost) is the newest participant; his role will be John Mark Byers, father to a victim who, having told reporters a “story [that] changed from his initial police statement,” became a suspect and, at one point, was even outright accused of committing the murders.
It goes without saying: Some dramatically potent stuff should arise from this onscreen presence, along with whatever Scott Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman scripted. Durand is, in that case, a pretty good get, if I do say so myself. (And, having seen him in plenty over the years,...

Even in its recent casting spurt, the role of Damien Echols has been a specter hanging over Devil’s Knot. The most well-known, outspoken, and controversial member of the West Memphis 3 is not only bound to play a major role in the Atom Egoyan film, but also, as a result, needs to be played just right for much of the drama to work. So, who would play him?
Unless you go to Wesleyan University or, at the very least, attend their shows, it’ no one you’ve ever heard of. ShowBlitz has learned that one of their drama students, James Hamrick, impressed Egoyan so much with an audition that he’s officially won the role over “dozens” of established young actors. With this, the film’s West Memphis 3 have been locked in; Kristopher Higgins will play Jessie Misskelley, and Justin Castor is set to appear as Jason Baldwin.

The case of the West Memphis Three is one of the longest-running cases of legal injustice in modern American history. In 1993, three teenagers from White Trash Central, aka West Memphis, Arkansas – Damien Echols, Jesse Misskelley, Jr. and Jason Baldwin – were convicted of the brutal rape, torture and murder of three little boys, Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers. As depicted in the unforgettable, made-for-hbo documentary Paradise Lost: The Child Murders of Robin Hood Hills, the West Memphis Three were found guilty of murder mostly because they were black-clad, heavy-metal kids in the middle of a deeply disturbed community desperate to pin such a heartbreaking crime on the a group of obvious misfits. The story continues in Paradise Lost 2: Revelations, Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory and now producer Peter Jackson‘s West of Memphis, which premiered at Sundance, introduces three new witnesses to corroborate the Three’s innocence. /Film]

When we started to hear about West of Memphis, the new documentary about the West Memphis Three (Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley) produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, and directed by Amy Berg, the big question was: what will this movie offer? The movie was born out of an investigation funded by Jackson and Walsh that seeks to find the real identity of the killer who ended the lives of three young boys in 1993. And it turns out the film might have an ace up its sleeve. While the first press screening is going on right now in Sundance, a press release has been sent out announcing that the movie reveals testimony from three witnesses who bolster accusations that the murders were really committed by a man named Terry Hobbs. Hobbs was the stepfather of one of the murder victims, and has long been linked to the case via DNA evidence.
