When "Futurama" debuted in 1999, smartphones weren't yet ubiquitous. There were some computer-like phones on the market, of course — tech-savvy nerds might recall Ibm's Simon from 1994 — but the first wireless internet-ready phones weren't put on the mass market until 2001. The first iPhone wasn't introduced until 2007, and by then, "Futurama" had already been canceled for the first time. As such, when one sees the 31st-century characters on "Futurama" using cell phones, they are extrapolated from the cellular technologies of the present. It wouldn't be until the 2011 "Attack of the Killer App" that modern iPhone technology would be addressed on "Futurama," and the showrunners depicted a world where eyePhones were implanted directly into the users' eyeballs.

"Futurama" is a fantastic series, but it's destined to rank second place in creator Matt Groening's legacy. How could it not when the man has "The Simpsons" on his resume?
"The Simpsons" is a genuine American cultural institution — everyone knows who the titular family is — and while plenty complain "The Simpsons" has declined over the years, there are others who insist it's still good. It has run continuously for 30+ years, so there's still an audience for it. "Futurama," since its 1999 debut, has been on-again/off-again with cancellations and revivals (it's currently in an on-again phase thanks to Hulu).
Still, the "Futurama" team has plenty to be proud of with their show and tries not to see it as in competition with "The Simpsons." The two shows are "different animals," said "Futurama" voice actor Billy West at the London McM Expo in May 2011.

Prior to the debut of "Futurama" in 1999, preeminent voice actor Billy West was already a towering presence in his field. He had previously played Doug Funnie in the hit Nickelodeon series "Doug," in addition to voicing the Larry Fine-like Stimpson J. Cat on "The Ren & Stimpy Show" opposite show creator John Kricfalusi. When Kricfalusi was fired for missing deadlines, West took over the role, playing both leads for the bulk of the series. West also played Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd in the 1996 oddity "Space Jam" and has voiced the Honey Nut Cheerios Bee and the Red M&m in myriad TV commercials.
In the normal course of seeking more work, sometime in the late '90s, West found himself in front of the casting directors for Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's new sci-fi sitcom. West, of course, would be cast in multiple roles for "Futurama,...

On "Futurama," the character of Amy Wong (Lauren Tom) works at Planet Express as an intern and as a student of Professor Farnsworth (Billy West). She's a fashion-obsessed rich girl, the daughter of ultra-wealthy parents, who sometimes resents her wealth, but wholly embraces access to it. She's also staggeringly intelligent and often helps the Professor with his wild inventions and bizarre quests. In the 2008 "Futurama" movie "The Beast With a Billion Backs," Amy married her longtime paramour Kif (Maurice Lamarche), an invertebrate salamander-like alien. In the most recent season of "Futurama," Amy and Kif are raising three children.
Lauren Tom plays Amy incredibly well, communicating her intelligence and her ditziness in equal measures. Her wealth sometimes disconnects her, and she's sometimes gullible, but she's still incredibly affable. Sample dialogue: "Fool me seven times, shame on you. Fool me eight or more times, shame on me." The ensemble would not be complete without her,...

In the "Futurama" episode "The Prisoner of Benda," Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) invents a body-swapping device that trades the consciousnesses of two users. He, being a very, very old man, would like to occupy the youthful, more active body of his employee, Amy Wong (Lauren Tom). Amy, meanwhile, longs to overeat as she once did as a child, and the Professor's bony body would allow her to indulge in her appetite. They swap bodies, but only after doing so realize that the machine doesn't allow them to swap back. A third body would allow Amy to return to her body, but then the Professor and the third party would be swapped. It was all very complicated.
Eventually, Fry (West) and Leela (Katey Sagal) are having romantic dates in the bodies of Dr. Zoidberg (West) and the Professor, and the Professor is performing in an Eastern European circus in Bender's body.

“Futurama” is coming back for more adventures after being renewed for Seasons 13 and 14 — an additional 20 episodes — at Hulu.
The beloved adult animated series, which originally premiered in 1999, follows Philip J. Fry (Billy West), a New York City pizza delivery boy who accidentally freezes himself in 1999 and gets defrosted in the year 3000. Fry goes on to befriend a hard-drinking robot named Bender (John Dimaggio) and falls in love with cyclops Leela (Katey Sagal).
The trio find work at the Planet Express Delivery Company, founded by Fry’s elderly doddering descendant, Professor Hubert Farnsworth. Together with accountant Hermes Conrad, assistant Amy Wong and alien lobster Dr. John Zoidberg, they embark on adventures that take them to every corner of the universe.
After its initial run on Fox, a roller-coaster of cancellations and resurrections ensued. Four successful direct-to-dvd releases between 2007 and 2009 led to the show’s rebirth on Comedy Central from 2010 to 2013. In...

Episode 2 of "Futurama" season 11, "Children of a Lesser Bog," was a sequel to an episode from back in season 5, "Kif Gets Knocked Up A Notch." Amy Wong (Lauren Tom) and Kif Kroker (Maurice Lamarche) had children, but Kif's species (the Amphibiosians) live as tadpoles in a swamp for 20 years before maturing. The episode took advantage of the real life time lapse by having Amy and Kif finally become new parents.
The latest episode, "Rage Against The Vaccine," again referenced "Kif Gets Knocked Up A Notch," but only a minor gag from it. In that episode, Amy asks the Planet Express crew to drop her off to see Kif on their next delivery. Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) refuses and throws a tantrum: "We could but we won't! It's a spaceship, dammit, not a prom limousine!" Farnsworth is so furious he retreats to "The Angry Dome."

Shut up and take my money! The official Fortnite Twitter account is teasing a Futurama and Fortnite crossover event beginning tomorrow, July 26! The text in the post reads, “All Hail Hypnotoad. 7.26.23.” The interactive event will help celebrate Hulu’s Futurama revival, which kicked off on Monday, July 24.
Details about the Futurama and Fortnite crossover remain a mystery. Still, if this event is like any other, players can expect wacky character skins, cosmetics, gliders, and unique locations on the ever-changing map. Can we expect character skins for Fry, Bender, Leela, Zoidberg, and the rest of the crew? How about a Planet Express glider to ride into the action? Will characters like Amy Wong, Hermes Conrad, Professor Farnsworth, Zapp Branigan, Kif Kroker, and Nibbler be a part of the event? Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long to find out.

Good news, everyone! After a brief little entire decade off the air, Futurama is back, baby. Matt Groening and David X. Cohen’s sci-fi follow-up to The Simpsons has once again found itself revivified, this time by Hulu.
This most recent hiatus has been the longest one by far, so you’ll be forgiven for forgetting what’s been going on 3,000 years in the future. And that’s before getting into all of the time travel, clones, robots, resurrections, and multiversal cardboard boxes. So here’s a quick refresher of everything you need to rewatch before season 11’s July 24 premiere.
Season 1 Episodes 1 & 2: “Space Pilot 3000” / “The Series Has Landed”
While the pilot focuses primarily on the first meeting of sad-sack Philip J. Fry (Billy West), space cyclops Turanga Leela (Katey Sagal), and self-avowed “lovable scamp” Bender Bending Rodriguez (John Dimaggio), it’s the follow-up episode that really sets the show in motion.

"Futurama" tells the story of Fry, a loveably immature goofball who accidentally freezes himself in a cryogenic chamber in the year 2000, only to be reawakened in the year 2999 in a technologically advanced future. Fry manages to hunt down a descendent of his, Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth, the brilliant-yet-absent-minded mad scientist who started the interplanetary delivery service Planet Express Inc. to finance his wacky experiments. Also working for Planet Express are the cycloptic Leela, the foul-mouthed Bender, the sweet Amy Wong, the alien crustacean Zoidberg, and the ever-working Hermes Conrad. Throughout the show's run, Fry and co. went on a series of intergalactic and interdimensional adventures that are equal parts sci-fi craziness and oddball whimsy.
The show is the brainchild of "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, and he brings along his signature sense of humor that combines plenty of absurd gags and cultural satire balanced with just the right amount of heart.

An actor's performance can change how a character is written — even when that performance is coming from inside a recording booth. Lauren Tom, the voice of Amy Wong on "Futurama," is one such performance. No space travel show is complete without an engineer character, and it seems that early in development, Amy was supposed to be that character on "Futurama."
