One of the best doubles players ever, Pam Shriver, has spoken about whether Iga Swiatek can match a huge Steffi Graf feat.
The world No. 1 has started the new season very strongly by winning all her matches, including a performance against China that helped Poland to take the semi-finals of the United Cup.
This follows an excellent end to last season. After a slight wobble from Wimbledon to the end of the US Open, Swiatek recovered by winning in Beijing and then triumphing for the first time at the Wta Finals.
Although we are still in the very early stages of the season, Swiatek's phenomenal ability and accomplishments to date and how well she is playing naturally lead to the question of just how much she can achieve in 2024.

Ons Jabeur may have fallen short in her quest to become the first African woman to win a Grand Slam in the Open Era, but she did not leave the Wta Awards Week emptyhanded.
The Tunisian trailblazer won two awards during the Wta's annual prize-giving celebration that rewards the best-performing players and coaches in terms of match results and those who went above and beyond in contributing to every facet of the sport.
The self-proclaimed "Minister of Happiness" won the Karen Sportsmanship Award for the second year and the Peachy Kellmeyer Player Service Award for the first time. She is the first Wta player to bag two year-end season awards since Kim Clijsters.
The Sportsmanship Award is bestowed upon the Wta player who demonstrated exemplary ethical behavior on and off the court, abiding by the rules of fair play, respecting her peers, and being gracious and considerate.

Naomi Osaka returns to tennis in about a month, and former Wta player Pam Shriver wants her to take some cues from the likes of Serena Williams.
Using Serena Williams as a role model is nothing new for Osaka, who grew up idolizing the legendary player. She's not the only one, as Williams was a role model for many tennis players.
When you achieve some of the things she did in her career, then she's a pretty good role model to have. Williams obviously has experience playing as a mother as well, something the Japanese player will soon get to experience.
Serena gave birth, and she came back and played well. That's what Osaka is staring at, though her circumstances are a bit different. She's quite young, which obviously matters as it should allow her to get back into playing shape a bit quicker.

Aryna Sabalenka won her maiden Grand Slam in 2023, and former Wta player Pam Shriver thinks another one is coming in 2024.
Predicting that Aryna Sabalenka will win another Grand Slam in 2024 is almost a given, because she's arguably the second-best player in the world behind Iga Swiatek.
She was certainly that for much of 2023, so expecting her to take another step forward is pretty normal. Obviously, tennis is more complicated than that, and simply because she had a good 2023 doesn't mean she'll have a good 2024 season.
There are certain events where she has more chances than others, with the Australian Open being one of them. She could also win the US Open and nearly did last year against Coco Gauff.
She was inches away from advancing to the Roland Garros final but couldn't quite get there. And Wimbledon has always been a good event for her.

Much has been said about the forehand of Coco Gauff and the need to change it, but one former Wta player doesn't think it's needed.
As Gauff struggled in the first half of this year, more and more people pointed out her forehand as the issue. It's not the best forehand in the world and likely not one of the better ones, but it can get the job done when she confidently swings it.
We've seen that at the US Open, where she won the trophy. It's good enough essentially, which is why it doesn't need to change, according to former player Pam Shriver. She talked to the Wta about the 2024 season, saying that Gauff doesn't need a better forehand to win many Grand Slams.
I was concerned about Coco, and then just look how she finished out the summer. I feel like the voice of Bg helped her enormously.

Former Wta player Pam Shriver thinks that Iga Swiatek will once again finish as world number one after the 2024 season.
Iga Swiatek finished as world number one for the second year in a row. The 2022 campaign was ridiculously good, featuring some amazing milestones by the Polish superstar. She was by far the best player that year and deservedly finished the year as world number one.
This year was a bit more tricky for the reigning world number one as she had to finish the year with a win at the Wta Finals to get it back from Aryna Sabalenka. The season was pretty impressive again, but nowhere near the 2022 campaign.
It didn't happen because she played particularly worse but more so because the opposition stepped up considerably, including Sabalenka, who became world number one after the US Open.
Swiatek would win the Wta Finals and finish the year as world number one again.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has reacted to recent criticism about his form and admits he doesn't need to "prove anything to anyone" except himself.
The Greek superstar has suffered a severe depreciation in his performances and results in the second half of the campaign. Since bagging his first Atp title of the season in Los Cabos in early August , Tsitsipas has picked up four wins from six tournaments at all levels.
That run includes a second-round exit at the US Open, the only Grand Slam he has yet to reach the second week in his career. Tsitsipas was powerless to prevent an ignominious defeat for his country in the Davis Cup tie against Slovakia . It means Greece will not be able to progress from World Group I in the team competition next year.

The three players are only separated by a one-year gap in age, prompting Shriver to describe them as the leaders of the 19, 20, and 21-year-old age groups.
20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz is the first player born after the 1990s to win multiple Slams . In addition, he is the youngest year-end Atp No. 1 in history. Former Wta player Pam Shriver praised Coco Gauff for her decision to retool her coaching team, which proved crucial for her tremendous breakout.
For much of her career, Coco Gauff was coached by her father. As she became better and better, Gauff started to work with other people, such as Patrick Mouratoglou, who also briefly served as her coach during the clay season this year.
The American didn't have a great time during that time and opted to retool her coaching team, allowing her father to step back and bringing in Pere Riba as the primary coach.
They clicked as both wanted her to be more of an attacking player, and with the inclusion of experienced voice Brad Gilbert, things simply went to another level.

Coco Gauff caught a lot of criticism for her forehand, but former Wta player Pam Shriver doesn't think it's a total disaster.

Former Wta doubles No. 1 Pam Shriver is a fan of craft and improvisation, but she has warmly embraced "knockdown, drag-out power clash" while watching one-dimensional players.
This year's Australian Open women's final was billed as the clash of the heavyweights between Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina . Two hyper-aggressive players of first-strike tennis who want to destroy every ball in sight.
While watching the final in which Sabalenka captured her maiden Grand Slam singles title with a comeback victory, Shriver admitted to being won over by the relentless nature of the fast and furious style. She talked of Sabalenak and Rybakina being in the same bracket as retired Wta stars like Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati.
Seles and Capriati embody the one-dimensional but often incredibly efficient power game. And this couldn't be more true than watching the 1991 semifinal between them at the US Open, that avid fans can recall to this very day.

Iga Swiatek suffered a pretty big loss to Coco Gauff at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters and she avenged it recently in Beijing.
Gauff bested Swiatek en route to her first Wta 1000 Premier title earlier this year at the Cincinnati Masters, and it was a disappointing loss for Swiatek. It was the end of her domination against Gauff that included many great wins, such as the Roland Garros final.
A bit over a month later, Swiatek took on Gauff at the China Open recently, and it looked very much like the matches we saw before. She completely dominated , and according to Pam Shriver, it's the competitive spirit that she has that allowed her to do that.

ESPN's coverage of the 2023 U.S. Open tennis championships kicks off on August 28, marking the cable network’s ninth year as the exclusive TV home of the Open. While professional tennis remains a comparatively niche sport in the U.S. when compared to the likes of pro-football or pro-basketball, it is a niche that is rife with fascinating personalities, grudges, conflicts of interest, and figures who are revered and others who elicit eye-rolls. That holds true for both the active players on the tour as well as those in the press booth. Hardcore tennis fans are familiar with these personalities and get a whole other level of enjoyment out of watching the matches as they call out the commentators' well-known biases, groan at the Brad Gilbert nicknames, and giggle as Pam Shriver's antics drive everyone else to distraction.

It's rare to see Elena Rybakina lose her temper on a tennis court, but the 2022 Wimbledon champion's relationship with coach Stefano Vukov might have hit its boiling point.
Rybakina was involved in a seemingly tough match against Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters and had just dropped the first set tiebreak from 6-3 up as her opponent reeled off five straight set points.
Midway through the second set, Rybakina's Croatian coach Vukov appeared to shout some instructions while sitting in the player's box courtside after his charge hammered a fifth double fault in the match. But that didn't sit too well with the ice-cold Kazakhstani player, who hit back at her coach, repeating her response twice.
"If I need something, I'll ask."

Tennis star Justine Pearce and elite coach Glenn Lapthorn, the lead characters in new Prime Video series Fifteen-Love, are works of fiction. Their story is not. After decades of silence and whispers, allegations of predatory sexual behaviour and abuse perpetrated by tennis coaches on young players are finally being voiced, and the consequences finally being felt.
In the new British TV drama, 24-year-old newcomer Ella Lily Hyland is outstanding as Justine, a physiotherapist whose promising tennis career ended at age 17, following an injury. 40-year-old Aidan Turner plays her former private coach Glenn, a married father of two whom Justine reports to the police for multiple counts of historical sexual assault. Glenn denies any wrongdoing, calling Justine a fantasist harbouring a bitter grudge. What really happened in the run-up to the 2018 French Open tournament unspools over six tense episodes.

A new documentary about Richard Williams, the father of tennis greats Serena and Venus Williams, has sold into major markets.
“On the Line: The Richard Williams Story,” which had its U.K. premiere at Sheffield Doc/Fest in June, has been sold into Sky (U.K. and Italy), Canal+ (France), Mnet (South Africa), Paramount+ (Australia) and Tvnz (New Zealand).
The film paints a complex portrait of the life, career and impact of Williams — the family patriarch and tennis coach to Venus and Serena Williams, who was also portrayed by Will Smith in the 2022 movie “King Richard.”
In the documentary, Williams provides rare home video footage and candid interviews to detail the family’s unprecedented gate-crashing in the 1990s of a predominately white, upper-class sport. Newly discovered archival footage from the courts in Compton and a roster of interview subjects including Billie Jean King and Pam Shriver, retrace the Williams sisters...

Alexander Zverev booked his spot among the last four players at the 2023 Roland Garros , but he was criticized after his match.
The 26-year-old German defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry in four sets and one year later, he will return to the Roland Garros semifinals at the Court Philippe-Chatrier. Event, round, and court, which saw him go probably through his worst experience as a professional tennis player on the Atp Tour.
Happy that he's through to the semifinals, Zverev was talking to Alex Corretja on the court after his win, and he was in a very good mood, giving very honest answers. He was asked what was going through his head when he was serving for the match, and well, the German was honest.
"I just had to remember that I have a pair of balls as well that I can use. Sometimes, that is the only way to go. But the...

This year's Roland Garros already had a few controversies but this one left two former professional players with a lot of disappointment.
It was a nice sunny afternoon in the City of Love but there was very little between Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo and their opponents. It was a really competitive doubles match at Roland Garros with the aforementioned pairing leading 1-0 in sets.
The score in the second one said 3-1 for Kato and Sutjiadi with Miyo Kato sending a ball towards a ball girl on the opposite side of the court. The ball wasn't quick nor hit with much power but it ended up hitting the girl resulting in the disqualification of Kato and Sutjiadi.
The girl fumbled the catch even though it was a catchable ball with chaos soon to ensue. The umpire initially gave a warning to Kato, however, Sorribes Tormo and Bouzkova pressured him to call a supervisor.

In a baffling turn of events, the Madrid Open's doubles finalists were denied the opportunity to address the crowd during the trophy ceremony.
The incident, which took place at La Caja Magica in Madrid, has left tennis legend Pam Shriver and the tennis community fuming over what they perceive as a blatant disregard for tradition and respect.
The Wta doubles final featured a high-profile match-up between Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff against Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia. The latter duo emerged victorious in straight sets, but what followed left many perplexed.
Unlike the singles final held the day before, the doubles winners and runners-up were not allowed to speak to the audience, a custom that has long been observed in tennis tournaments and during all other three trophy ceremonies in Madrid.
This unusual snub caught the attention of former doubles world number one and current ESPN commentator Pam Shriver.

Coco Gauff has just made it through to the last 16 of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.
The newly-turned 19-year-old won in straight sets against fellow youngster Linda Noskova, after Gauff's second-round win against Spain's Busca. Astonishingly, this summer it will be four years since Coco Gauff initially burst onto the scene with a brilliant run to the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2019 at the age of 15.
Because of this, it feels as though Gauff is already an established and experienced member of the Wta's elite. Yet she remains one of only four teenagers in the Wta's top 100.
Pam Shriver, speaking to press in Indian Wells this week, believes that Gauff has all the attributes to get to the very top of the game. But she also warns against expecting too much, as early pressures on young achievers can often stifle their natural development.

Guadalajara (Mexico), Oct 19 (Ians) Croatian tennis player Donna Vekic enjoyed a successful turnaround at the Guadalajara Open Akron defeating Laura Pigossi 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round but her arrival for the tournament wasn’t smooth.
A finalist in San Diego on Sunday, Vekic arrived in Guadalajara on Monday. Part of her journey involved a helicopter ride, which was going well. Until it wasn’t.
“It was great, except the door opened mid-flight. It was actually my fault because when we were sitting at the beginning, it was so hot, so I opened the door a little bit to have some air. I guess I didn’t close it properly,” Vekic was quoted as saying by Wta.
“10 minutes into the flight, the door opened. I was freaking out. The guys were freaking out in the back because I was sitting in the front. The pilot was like, ‘No pasa nada.

The poster for the documentary “On the Line: The Richard Williams Story” is cleverly acerbic. Against a white background stands one of the more derided — and more recently celebrated, via last year’s sports biopic, “King Richard” — figures in professional sports: Venus and Serena Williams’ father, Richard. He’s got a tennis racket in his hand and is clad in throwback tennis whites. It was not typically what he wore as he and wife Oracene (Price) trained their daughters on the public courts of Compton, Los Angeles. But the look was de rigueur for the white tennis establishment that Venus and Serena took on and then transformed.
In “On the Line,” Williams has his say. Unsurprisingly, he’s frank, occasionally funny, but also vulnerable, not least because he’s growing frail, having suffered from health issues. As directed by Stuart McClave, the documentary isn’t exactly a vanity project, but...

Update: In her interview with ABC News, Mary Trump defended one of the headline-grabbing claims in her new book, that her uncle Donald Trump hired a friend to take the Sat as way to improve his chances of getting into the University of Pennsylvania.
In a portion of the interview shown on Good Morning America on Wednesday, George Stephanopoulos asked her how she knows that given that it happened in 1964.
“I’ve been told this by people in my family,” she said. “I am absolutely confident that it’s true. I am happy finally to be able to speak about it. I also know that it is not the Joe Shapiro we have been focusing on.”
She identified Shapiro as the friend who Trump paid to take the test. But as details of the book were reported last week, Shapiro’s widow, Pam Shriver, posted a video that cast doubt on the claims,...

Actor George Lazenby will reveal how he "bluffed" his way into the James Bond role - he's writing a tell-all book on his career.
The Australian star enjoyed a short-lived stint as the suave superspy in 1969 Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service, before losing the role to Roger Moore.
Now he's set to tell the full story of his one-off big-screen outing as 007, and how it affected his career in later years.
According to reports, Lazenby's literary agent describes the upcoming autobiography as "a brilliantly frank tale of how he bluffed his way into the role of James Bond, and what he did afterwards."
There is no confirmation on whether Lazenby will detail his personal life and his explosive, ongoing divorce from tennis ace Pam Shriver in the tome.
The book, titled The Other Fella, is due for release in 2012.

James Bond star George Lazenby has launched a court battle to nullify a prenuptial agreement with his estranged wife Pam Shriver.
Former tennis player Shriver filed for divorce from the actor last year after a six-year marriage, citing irreconcilable differences.
She accused Lazenby of threatening to kill her, assaulting her in a drunken rage, and giving alcohol to their three children - all of which he has denied.
And now the 69-year-old actor is hitting back - by demanding a judge overturns their prenuptial agreement because his wife is so rich, according to TMZ.com.
In papers filed at Los Angeles County Superior Court, Lazenby also asks for $16,133 (£10,755) in spousal support.
He claims his estranged wife is "30 times a millionaire" and he doesn't want to explain the difference in their lifestyles to their kids, five-year-old George, Jr. and twins Kate and Sam, three.

He claims his estranged wife is "30 times a millionaire" and he doesn't want to explain the difference in their lifestyles to their kids, five-year-old George, Jr. and twins Kate and Sam, three.

Latest: George Lazenby's ex-wife has accused the Bond star of beating her while she was carrying their child.
Christina Master's accusations could strengthen Lazenby's current wife, Pam Shriver's case against him.
Tennis ace Shriver is divorcing the actor after six years, and accused her estranged husband of threatening to kill her, assaulting her in a drunken rage, and giving alcohol to their three children - all of which Lazenby has denied.
Master claims Lazenby punched her in the face when she was five months pregnant and broke her nose when their son, Zack, was dying from cancer.
She alleges he threatened to kill her when she told him she wanted a divorce, and says she was so fearful he meant it that it took years before she found the courage to leave him in 1994.
But Lazenby - who was divorced from Master in 1995 after 24 years together - says the declarations are 'contrived, unfounded and without merit'.
In a statement released by his spokesman Michael Sands, he adds, "I wish Christina would show me a medical report, x-rays and pictures that show I broke her nose. I never punched her in my life."
Daughter Melanie Lazenby has backed up her mother's claims, insisting her father 'tormented me, humiliated me, hurt me physically, scarred me emotionally' and 'placed a feeling of fear and mistrust in me'.
But Lazenby says his ex-wife and daughter are seeking revenge for the death of Zack, who died of cancer at 19.
He adds, "Melanie is always seeking revenge for that mistake."...

Latest: Former Bond star George Lazenby has hit back at his estranged wife after she labelled him an "abusive alcoholic" - insisting it was her drinking problem which blighted their marriage.
Tennis ace Pam Shriver is divorcing the actor after six years, and accused her husband of threatening to kill her, assaulting her in a drunken rage, and giving alcohol to their three children - all of which Lazenby has denied.
And the star has now hit back at his estranged spouse, accusing her of having a drink problem and being addicted to medication.
In a 25-page statement filed at a Los Angeles court, Lazenby insists Shriver also put their kids George, four; and twins Caitlin and Samuel, two, at risk by driving under the influence of drugs.
The papers read, "(She) consumes a cocktail of prescription painkillers, Ambien sleeping pills and rum or vodka each night and during the day. When I have expressed my grave concern to (her) about her combining Ambien with alcohol she flew into a rage and attempted to justify her addiction by claiming she has debilitating migraines and shoulder pain.
"She is in no condition to drive in the morning. I have seen her be drowsy and dizzy, with difficulties in co-ordination - I have warned on numerous occasions to refrain from transporting our children in the car when she is in such a state."
And the former 007 actor is adamant that her claims against him are false.
He adds, "It is ludicrous for (her) to claim that she is afraid of me. I am not a violent or aggressive person."...
