- Members have included Tommy James, Ronnie Rosnan, Mike Vale, Joseph Kessler, Vinnie Pietropaoli, George Magura, Eddie Grey, Peter P. Lucia Jr., Don Ciccone.
- When he was 12 years old, Tommy James met singer Troy Shondell ("This Time"). He thought the man's last name was cool, and when he was older and starting his own band, he remembered the name and called the band The Shondells.
- The Ed Sullivan Show (1948) requested a multi-track mix of "Crimson and Clover, when he was to debut the song. Having already been "scooped" by Chicago's WLS-AM (which had clandestinely taped his preview play of the song for them, and began featuring it on the air ahead of schedule), he wasn't going to risk a similar event, so the tape he gave them simply featured the song's mono mix, at four different EQ settings.
- The single version of "Crimson and Clover" actually featured just Tommy James and drummer Peter P. Lucia Jr. experimenting with a brand-new 16-track tape machine. The later album version included a long instrumental section featuring the whole band, recorded and edited in afterwards.
- The original Shondells were Tommy James' teenage band, based in Niles, MI, in the early 1960s. They made one single, "Hanky Panky", for a small label (Niles Records) and broke up. Five years later, "Hanky Panky" became a surprise hit when a radio DJ discovered it in a stack of old singles. After a bootleg re-pressing began to sell (the original label was out of business), Roulette Records tracked James down, offering him a record contract. He flew to New York, bringing the master of "Hanky Panky" (which was quickly reissued on Roulette), and assembled a new group of Shondells.
- One of the very first groups to produce music videos, starting with "Mony Mony" in 1968--13 years prior to MTV.
- In 1969 the group regrettably turned down the offer to perform at the original Woodstock Festival when the band's booking agent described the event as " . . . a stupid gig on a pig farm in upstate New York".
- The band's "It's Only Love" album cover was the first professional photo shoot by Linda McCartney. (1966).
- The title of "Mony Mony" was created from the MONY (Mutual Of New York) Insurance Company building whose logo could be seen from The Ed Sullivan Show (1948)' Manhattan apartment.
- Tommy James was managed in the 1960s by Lenny Stogel of Leonard Stogel and Associates.
