Exclusive: Film starring Rhys Ifans and Sophie Kennedy Clark gets international sales deal.
UK sales outfit Starline Entertainment has boarded international sales rights to Jake Chapman’s feature The Marriage of Reason and Squalor, which Sky Arts aired as a four-part series in June.
Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Sophie Kennedy Clark (Philomena) star in the surreal romantic fiction from artist Chapman, one half of the Turner prize-nominated artistic duo, The Chapman Brothers.
Adapted from his novel of the same name by Brock Norman Brock (Bronson), Chapman’s story is a parody of Mills & Boon-style romantic fiction.
The film follows a young woman who finds herself in an Alice In Wonderland-type dream world after her wealthy surgeon fiancé gives her a mysterious tropical island as a wedding gift.
Colin Vaines (Coriolanus) produced with Andy Noble (20,000 Days on Earth) for Morass Productions.
Jake’s brother, Dinos Chapman, provided the score along with Ilan Eshkeri (Kick-Ass).

Ilan Eshkeri: 'For me, the love story was important and it felt like we needed a melodic theme that helps you feel that these characters are falling in love' When I last spoke to composer Ilan Eshkeri at Sundance, he was in Utah to talk about his work on Shaun The Sheep (out in Us cinemas next month). Fast forward six months and we meet again at Edinburgh International Film Festival to talk about his work on the altogether more grown up and niche TV series The Marriage Of Reason & Squalor and upcoming thriller Autobahn. The Marriage Of Reason & Squalor marks the first full-length feature of artist Jake Chapman (whose brother and usual artistic collaborator Dinos also worked on the score). The series - shown in its film cut at Eiff - tells the surreal story of hopeless romantic Lydia Love (Sophie Kennedy Clarke), who gets more than she...

The artist best known for his work with his brother, Dinos, has turned out an unexpectedly entertaining adaptation of his own novel that is both gruesome and plausible
Here we have a true cinematic oddity, in every sense. Originally conceived as a feature film, eventually realised as a four-part TV series (which Sky Arts are currently mid-way through broadcasting), this adaptation by Jake Chapman of his own novel has now been cut together as a single entity for international release. Hence the screening that the Edinburgh film festival managed to secure is likely to be a one off, at least as far as UK filmgoers are concerned.
And it’s fair to say the film itself is a one off, too. Chapman, who is half of the stellar Yba brother-artists (his sibling, Dinos, isn’t entirely excluded from this project, having contributed music to the score); and he has become...

Rhys Ifans will star in a new four-part Sky Arts drama.
The Amazing Spider-Man actor is to feature alongside Sophie Kennedy Clark in Mills and Doom: The Marriage of Reason and Squalor, from visual artist Jake Chapman.
Based on Chapman's novel of the same name, the twisted romance follows Lydia (Clark), whose fiancé gifts her a desert island as a wedding present.
Arriving at the island and waiting for her partner, Lydia encounters a "reclusive and misshapen" author named Helmut (Ifans), who exerts an unusual control over her.
