A brilliant reimagining of the French revenge shocker, this all-new version puts its own bloody stamp on the story – but is just as harrowing, visceral and gutsy. It also boasts some great performances from its young cast, with Troian Bellisario and Bailey Noble proving themselves as two scream queens for the ultra-violent generation – plus cult star Toby Huss makes the most chilling appearance of his career.

Kevin and Michael Goetz serve up a less hardcore version of the horrific French original, which should come as a relief for the squeamish
Post-Easter, the chosen one is making multiple, tardy comebacks. A messianic kiddie keeps a religious cult in thrall in Midnight Special (out next week). This week, it’s Lucie (Troian Bellisario) who must suffer because another group of kooks think she holds the secret to something or other. Based on Pascal Laugier’s authentically horrific 2008 original (warning: contains graphic scenes of flaying), Kevin and Michael Goetz’s Us remake is, predictably, less hardcore – a relief for the squeamish at least. What’s left after the gore is stripped away is a mildly bloody, meatless horror. There is just enough smart editing (cutting the violence of a home invasion with images of sliced tomatoes and frying bacon adds flavour) to keep it clinging on to life.

To be fair, given the reputation Pascal Laugiers’ Martyrs has in the horror community, it was never going to be an easy task for Kevin and Michael Goetz to remake the film. Given that there are already a myriad of reviews out there comparing the two (detrimentally), I’m going to try something new and Not mention Laugiers’ original film too much… Though given how closely this remake follows the original movie, that could be difficult!

Pascal Laugier's Martyrs is one of the most genuinely disturbing films of the last decade, a peculiar mix of genres from revenge thriller to torture porn that shocks equally for its graphic content and main concept. The inevitable American remake, helmed by Kevin and Michael Goetz, quickly announces that it will recreate scenes from the original with minor changes (i.e. the opening shot with a little girl running away), however, there's something off right from the moment the respective authorities seem more interested in the paranormal angle of the protagonist's case rather than the criminal/traumatic. Having the French film in mind, it's instantly frustrating to just hear the word "monster", as Laugier's vision never inclined to that direction. But as the remake nevertheless continues to respect...

It is difficult to review Martyrs without comparing it to Pascal Laugier’s phenomenal 2008 film of the same name. So let’s just get this out of the way: Kevin and Michael Goetz’s (Scenic Route) remake is a watered-down version of the original that is nowhere near as visceral, affecting or memorable. Martyrs 2016 is 10-15 minutes shorter than Martyrs 2008. At a […]...

While its mainstream moment has come and gone, “torture porn” is still around and fully evident in “Martyrs,” an American remake of Pascal Laugier’s grisly 2008 French-language cult horror film about an abused woman’s revenge. Though directors Kevin and Michael Goetz, working from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”), show atmospheric, chilling flair in the early going, that gets wiped away by the pretentious, gruesome excesses of the second half, which place it firmly in the extreme cruelty sub-genre that puts a premium on depictions of agony (specifically, women’s agony) over everything else. After a breathless escape from.

In 2008, writer-director Pascal Laugier contributed to the realm of New French Extremity — a movement defined by such unrelenting bloodbaths as Claire Denis’s Trouble Every Day and Alexandre Aja’s High Tension — with Martyrs. While lesser films of its ilk received the dreaded “torture porn” label, Laugier’s shocking revenge picture gained cult admiration by padding its wrenching depictions of child abuse, hardcore gore, and ghastly (if not inventive) body horror with a provocative reflection on the meaning of suffering. Like many popular overseas horror selections, the film has received an American remake that may not resonate quite as much.
Directed by Kevin and Michael Goetz (Scenic Route), and based on a script by Mark L. Smith (who, as the co-writer of The Revenant, knows a thing or two about grueling violence), the new Martyrs begins much like its predecessor: with a little girl named Lucie (Ever Prishkulnik) escaping an...

I have not been a champion of the Martyrs remake. I just didn't see the point of remaking a great movie for the simple sake of making it more palpable for American audiences and the trailer didn't change my mind but when the opportunity arose to chat with the directors of the re-make, I jumped at the chance.
I would likely have skipped the entire affair if I didn't already know and like the work of Kevin and Michael Goetz. Their first feature film Scenic Route (trailer) was a really well made indie thriller that showcased the directors' ability to tell a great sto [Continued ...]...

The search for knowledge leads to great pain in the Goetz brothers' reimagining of Pascal Laugier’s Martyrs. With the new take on the cult classic horror film hitting theaters and Digital HD this Friday from Anchor Bay Entertainment, we caught up with Martyrs actress Bailey Noble (True Blood) in our latest Q&A feature.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Bailey. How did you get involved with this reimagining of Martyrs and what attracted you to the story?
Bailey Noble: First of all, I love that you called it a reimagining! I auditioned for the role of Anna and after meeting with the Goetz brothers and chemistry reading with Troian [Bellisario], the role was offered to me! I read the script and fell in love with Lucy and Anna's relationship, so that's initially what attracted me to the film. I also love seeing empowered female roles,...

"The truth can only be seen through their eyes." Anchorbay has debuted the first creepy trailer for the new Us remake of the French horror thriller Martyrs, which broke out and became a cult hit back in late 2008 after first premiering at festivals. This new version stars Troian Bellisario, Bailey Noble, Kate Burton and Toby Huss. This is about two friends who find themselves "trapped in a nightmare" as grown ups after being traumatized at an orphanage while young. This looks like it's much more of a psychological thriller with some horrific moments, and also exactly what I would expect for a remake. Just doesn't look that good. Here's the first trailer for Kevin & Michael Goetz's Martyrs, direct from Anchorbay's YouTube: Synopsis: Ten-year-old Lucie flees from the isolated warehouse where she has been held prisoner. Deeply traumatized, she is plagued by awful night terrors at the orphanage that takes her in.

We recently saw a new batch of stills for the upcoming Martyrs remake and with the movie due for release early next year, it was only a matter of time before a trailer was finaly released.

Paris-based sales powerhouse Wild Bunch has unveiled a packed Efm slate, including Margarethe von Trotta’s The Misplaced World, Michel Franco’s English-language debut Chronic and The Goetz Brothers’ Martyrs.

Scenic Route, by directing duo Kevin and Michael Goetz, is already out on VOD and will be released theatrically this Friday, August 23rd. We have an exclusive clip from the film to share with you. The one thing that stands out right away is the physical appearance of Josh Duhamel. I had to do a double-take there for a moment; the mohawk and the vomiting and the disrobing. This is not the Duhamel I thought I knew. Mitchell (Josh Duhamel) and Carter (Dan Fogler), life-long friends who have drifted apart, are on a road trip when their old pickup breaks down, leaving them stranded on an isolated desert road. Nobody can pick apart a man like his best friend, and as the relentless elements of the...

Now playing in select theaters, Scenic Route marks the debut feature from the sibling directing pair of Kevin and Michael Goetz and stars Josh Duhamel and Dan Fogler as two best friends trapped in a potentially deadly situation when their car breaks down alongside an isolated desert road. The film's first scene reveals Duhamel's Mitchell, covered in blood with his hair cut into a mohawk, sitting against a barren desert before flashing back to reveal the surprising chain of events that have unfolded to bring him and Folger's Carter to what may be the final moments of their lives. ComingSoon.net sat down to speak with both Duhmael and Fogler about the intensely dramatic project, most of which plays out with just the two actors. In the below interview, both men discuss the...

Title: Scenic Route Director: Kevin Goetz and Michael Goetz Starring: Josh Duhamel, Dan Fogler A spare, streamlined, desert-set psychological thriller that doubles as a study in masculine relationship drift, “Scenic Route,” scripted by Kyle Killen (“The Beaver”) and directed by brothers Kevin and Michael Goetz, is a reminder that smart writing and solid execution can lend wings to any concept that on the surface seems trite and familiar. The film opens with a jolt that tells viewers, yes, there will be blood. What will the cause and exact nature of that bloodletting be, however? Longtime friends who’ve drifted apart, Mitchell (Josh Duhamel) and Carter (Dan Fogler) are on a road [ Read More ]

This is Josh Duhamel like you've never seen him before. The actor, who got his start on All My Children and most recently starred in the Nicholas Sparks adaptation Safe Haven, appears covered in blood, wearing a mohawk and a scowl on the poster for Scenic Route. The film, written by Awake creator and The Beaver screenwriter Kyle Killen, directed by Kevin and Michael Goetz, follows two former friends (Duhamel and Dan Fogler) as they embark on what becomes a life or death road trip in the desert. I mean really, really bad. See, this is why I never go on road trips with my friends. Or family. Or anyone I know. Ever. Bad things always end up happening. Here’s a brand new trailer for Kevin and Michael Goetz feature film debut Scenic Route, a thriller starring Josh Duhamel and Dan Fogle. Scribed by The Beaver screenwriter and Black List veteran Kyle Killen, the film debuted at SXSW this year and was recently acquired at Cannes by Vertical Entertainment. The flick focus on Mitchell (Duhamel) and his unemployed old pal Carter (Fogle) who reunite after having drifted apart on a road trip when their old pickup breaks down – a melodramatic, introspective buddy adventure quickly devolves into chaos and despair. Sporting a mohawk, Duhamel explodes into a kicking rage and cruelly beats his buddy....

After premiering at South by Southwest earlier this year, Scenic Route is coming to theaters later this summer. The film is directed by Kevin and Michael Goetz with a script from Kyle Killen (the writer of The Beaver, one of my favorite 2011 films), and finds Josh Duhamel with a mohawk and stranded with Dan Fogler in the desert after a road trip goes sour. Isolated in the middle of nowhere, the two friends turn on each other, because nobody can pick apart a man like his best friend. It doesn't look like this film can easily be classified as a comedy or drama, but it certainly looks intriguing in this new full trailer. Watch! Here's the new trailer for Kevin and Michael Goetz's Scenic Route, originally from Deadline: Scenic Route is directed by commercial and music video directing duo Kevin and Michael Goetz with a script from Kyle Killen (The Beaver,...

Check out this crazy new trailer for an intense looking thriller called Scenic Route. We posted a teaser trailer for this a few months ago, and it featured Josh Duhamel and Dan Fogler beating the hell out of each other when a road trip goes horribly wrong. Death Valley is a really terrible place to have your car break down. In the latest trailer for Scenic Route, Mitchell (Josh Duhamel) and Carter (Dan Fogler) have no idea just how bad it’s going to get.
What starts out like a melodramatic, introspective buddy adventure quickly devolves into chaos and despair when Mitchell realizes that his estranged best friend Carter intentionally meddled with their pickup so that they could have a real conversation about life. In the desert extremes, Mitchell transitions from a clean-cut family man in a polo shirt into a Travis Bickle doppelgänger. Without giving too...

I tend to associate Josh Duhamel with Transformers sequels and half-hearted rom-coms, from Life As We Know It to Safe Haven. Nothing wrong with that. It.s partially my fault, and partially his, given the roles he has chosen. His latest, Scenic Route, is quite different, however, and soon enough you.ll be able to see why. Scenic Route, a thriller co-directed by first-timers Kevin and Michael Goetz, was picked up by Vertical Entertainment at the Cannes Film Festival.
