It’s official: Come January, SNL will be adding a black woman to its cast. (And possibly two, though Lorne Michaels is reportedly wary of having too many broads on set. Sigh.)
That woman could be one of the 11 comedians who apparently auditioned for SNL in a special showcase at L.A.’s Groundlings Theater. Comedian Simone Shepherd tagged them all in an Instagram photo that has since been taken down — and after looking into each one, it’s safe to say that there’s a lot of talent here. So much for black women not being ready for the Not Ready for Primetime Players.

Saturday Night Live plans to add one or two black female performers to its cast as soon as January.
A representative for the NBC sketch-comedy show on Thursday confirmed reports it's answering complaints about its lack of diversity by staging showcases to choose at least one black female cast member and to hire her within weeks.
In recent weeks, the show has seen two-dozen candidates in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.
The New York Times reported that a special audition for seven or eight finalists will be held Monday on the SNL stage in Manhattan.

Saturday Night Live's secret audition to find an African-American female was total Bs -- at least according to one actress who tried out, but thinks it was only thrown together to quiet SNL's critics ... not to find a new cast member. Comedian Tiffany Haddish tells TMZ the Dec. 2 talent search at The Groundlings Theatre in L.A. felt like it was a dog and pony show, partially because executive producer Lorne Michaels wasn't...

In a week that saw Saturday Night Live come under the microscope of The New York Times for the program's lack of diversity, specifically where black women cast members were concerned, the show cold-opened Saturday night with a skit starring guest host Kerry Washington, satirizing the situation – and even culminating with a pre-"Live from New York, It's Saturday Night" announcement from the Rev. Al Sharpton.
"What have we learned from this sketch?" Sharpton said, speaking directly to the camera. "As usual, nothing."
In the course of the sketch, the Scandal star played Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey (rather broadly) but...

The very funny comedienne who is at the center of what's turning into a War on "Saturday Night Live" doesn't believe she's been passed over because she's Black -- it's tough for people of All colors to get on the show. "Love Thy Neighbor" star Darmirra Brunson thinks SNL regular Jay Pharoah is off base for ragging on the show for not having enough black females in the cast. What’s up with this, Kenan?
In a recent TV Guide interview, Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson was asked why SNL currently has no black female cast members — and hasn’t since Maya Rudolph left the show way back in 2007.
“It’s just a tough part of the business,” Thompson replied. “Like in auditions, they just never find ones that are ready.”
TV Guide also asked Thompson what the show would do if they needed to spoof an African-American woman. “I don’t know,” the comedian replied. “We just haven’t done them. That’s what I’m saying.
