"The eagle has..." been grounded, at least for now. Disney+ has cancelled The Right Stuff TV series. It's the first cancellation by the streaming service but season two is being shopped elsewhere.
A drama series based on the bestselling book by Tom Wolfe, The Right Stuff stars Patrick J. Adams, Jake McDorman, Colin O'Donoghue, James Lafferty, Aaron Staton, Michael Trotter, Micah Stock, Patrick Fischler, Eric Ladin, Nora Zehetner, Shannon Lucio, and Eloise Mumford.

The Right Stuff‘s astronauts have been grounded by mission control: Disney+ has cancelled the space drama after just one season, according to our sister site Deadline. Producers Warner Bros. Television are reportedly shopping the series to other networks, though, with TNT and HBO Max said to be in the mix.

Exclusive: Disney+ has opted not to order a second season of space race series The Right Stuff. The Mercury 7 period drama, starring Patrick J. Adams and Jake McDorman, originated at National Geographic before launching as a Disney+ original last October. It is Disney+’s first scripted series cancellation.
Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind The Right Stuff, is shopping it to other outlets, with WarnerMedia siblings TNT and HBO Max considered logical potential targets. I hear the options on the cast expire tomorrow, and Wbtv has asked for a two-week extension while the efforts to find a new home continue.
There is a major incentive for Wbtv and parent WarnerMedia to try and keep The Right Stuff going — in November, the series, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, was given $13.7 million to move from Florida to California for Season 2, the fourth-highest relocating incentive ever awarded under the Cfc program.

Shannon Lucio has been gracing our screens with her presence for almost 20 years. After making her TV debut in 2003, she got her big break the following year when she was cast as Lindsay Gardner in The O.C. Anyone who was a teenager in the early 2000s remembers how popular The O.C. was, so needless to say it did wonders for her career. In the years since, Shannon has gone on to earn dozens of film and TV roles, and she has shown the world that she can play any kind of character. Her latest role in the new

If you thought the “Right Stuff” storyline where Alan Shepard’s wife Louise changed her niece’s name to “Martha” seemed a bit far-fetched — even for a TV show — then you might want to sit down for this one.
In Episode 4, titled “Advent,” Shepard (played by Jake McDorman in the Disney+ series) and his wife Louise (Shannon Lucio) have her niece, Judith, come to live with them in December 1959 after Louise’s sister passes away. When Shepard comes home at Christmas and is talking about the new addition to the family, Louise corrects him on the use of “Judith,” saying they are going to rename her Martha, because Judith “sounds too much” like Julie, the name of one of their daughters.
Later, Alan’s parents come over for Christmas dinner, and his father, Alan Sr., a stern Army man, is having none of this renaming stuff. He mocks his son...

What’s worse than wearing white to a wedding? Well, if you’re one of the Mercury 7 wives, wearing a bold floral print to a photoshoot where all the other women have agreed to dress plainly.
That’s what happens in Episode 3 of Disney+ series “The Right Stuff,” when Scott Carpenter’s wife, Rene Carpenter (played by Jade Albany Pietrantonio), shows up the other gals. Imagine the side-eye just before the flash.
But did it really happen? Yes, the platinum blonde Mrs. Carpenter arrived at the wives’ Mercury space capsule photoshoot wearing a sleeveless red floral dress, breaking the dress-code rules, as the other women were dressed in their assigned solid colors: pink, yellow, blue and white.
Readers can see the original photo from the shoot in question, which was done by Life magazine, here.

On this Friday’s episode of Disney+’s The Right Stuff, the Mercury Seven astronauts are put through a gimbal rig training exercise that makes the wildest rollercoaster in the world look like a stroll through the park. The device is designed to simulate an aircraft spinning out of control, and the series’ stars were actually strapped into it in a real test of whether they could keep their stomachs in check.

Disney+ blasted off into space — or at least prepared to — with Friday’s premiere of the Mercury Seven series The Right Stuff. But are you along for the flight?
Before you chime in with your thoughts, a brief recap of the first half of the two-episode premiere and its major players: The drama begins with a tension-filled scene on May 5, 1961, aka the day the first American man would be launched into space. Astronaut Alan Shepard (played by Limitless‘ Jake McDorman) accuses his Mercury Seven teammate John Glenn (Suits‘ Patrick J. Adams) of going behind his back.

What a great time to be a NASA nerd and a space-geek. The globe has witnessed America’s return to space with SpaceX’s Falcon 9, and soon we will return to the Moon in the spaceship Artemis. With the Artemis program, NASA will land the first woman and next man on the Moon by 2024, using innovative technologies to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before. We will collaborate with our commercial and international partners and establish sustainable exploration by the end of the decade. Then, we will use what we learn on and around the Moon to take the next giant leap – sending astronauts to Mars.

The space race is on.
Disney+ unveiled a sneak peek at The Right Stuff on Saturday, and it gives us our biggest look at the new series yet.
Based on the iconic bestseller by Tom Wolfe, The Right Stuff is an inspirational look at the early days of the U.S. Space Program and the incredible story of America’s first astronauts, the Mercury Seven.
At the height of the Cold War in 1959, the Soviet Union dominates the space race, and America fears it is a nation in decline.
Newly-formed NASA has the monumental task of sending a man into space, and its engineers estimate they need decades to accomplish the feat.
They are given two years. Dubbed Project Mercury, the program recruits and trains just seven astronauts from a handful of the military’s best pilots.

This year’s virtual Comic-Con@Home has announced its schedule for Saturday, July 25. The highlights are below.
The virtual event replaces the annual San Diego Comic-Con, the largest fan convention in North America, which was to be held July 22–26 at the San Diego Convention Center, until the Covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
In June, Comic-Con International — the non-profit organization that oversees Sdcc and its sister event, WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif. — announced it was moving forward with the virtual event on the same dates. This time, however, the event is free and open to all.
The Comic-Con@Home schedule — including Wednesday, July 22, Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24 — is being announced daily through Sunday.
Saturday’s events include (all times are Pacific Daylight):
10–11 a.m.
“Cosmos: Possible Worlds” — featuring the host and creators of the Fox docu-series, including host Neil deGrasse Tyson, visual effects supervisor Jeffrey A. Okun, executive producer and director Ann Druyan,...

Well this is the shortest MPAA ratings bulletin I believe I've ever posted as it's only made up of two films, the first of which is Hitman: Agent 47, which Fox will be releasing as an R-rated film. This comes as something of a surprise since PG-13 releases are all the rage nowadays and the easiest way to get more butts in the seats, but Fox is taking a bit of a chance, going with an R-rating, just like the first film, which crashed and burned back in 2007. We'll see how this second attempt does. Then there's a PG-13 for The Perfect Guy, a new thriller featuring quite the ensemble including strong>Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, Morris Chestnut, Kathryn Morris, Rutina Wesley, Holt McCallany and Shannon Lucio. Among the falling of angels that ended Season 8, the incident of Castiel losing his grace and becoming human seemed like a minor point. Regardless of its perceived scale, however, it was nonetheless a huge upheaval for the angel, who once again paid a heavy price for trusting the wrong individual. Compounding the difficulty of adjusting to his human state, Castiel was also forced into becoming a fugitive by angels looking for vengeance. This week’s episode picks up on his struggles, as well as how angels are finding their bearings on Earth, in another solid episode that proves things are only about to get more difficult for the Winchesters and Castiel.

The best things “Girl in the Flower Dress” had going for it was it’s special effects/action and getting Skye’s double-agent status out in the open and dealt with. If Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had let that particular plotline carry on much longer, the series would’ve suffered. What this show needs to do is push forward at breakneck speed and never look back for too long. I like that Centipede was brought back into the mix and, instead of prancing around the same story we saw in their previous appearance, we were treated to something a little different that progressed that particular plot arc while giving us a much-needed backstory for Skye.
Our freak of the week is a man who eventually calls himself Scorch – everyone seems to groan whenever they hear he’s been given a name – because of his ability to produce fire and not burn himself.

On Agents of Shield this week, we got a better look at Centipede as we met Raina, a new key player in the organization who arrived as the "Girl in the Flower Dress."
Raina has a lot more subtly to her style, easily charming Chan, a street pyrokentic, and convincing him that taking the name "Scorch" would give him a chance to be remembered by the world. The Yin to her Yang was the doctor we previously met in the pilot, who was much more direct in her methods of wanting to use him up.
The doctor, "Debbie" (as she was listed in the credits), was well portrayed by actress Shannon Lucio, but the character felt a bit two-dimensional, which is why I suspect she was given a spectacular send off in a ball of fire from the hands of Scorch. What better way to improve your antagonist than killing...

Apart from the pilot, it has been difficult to recommend Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The previous three instalments are a perfect storm of hackneyed direction, inane scripting and poorly executed action set-pieces. This week, S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t much of an improvement, but Skye’s inevitable betrayal undoubtedly spices things up. In “Girl in the Flower Dress” we learn that Skye’s parents hold a larger place within the Marvel universe; and more importantly, it gives viewers more reason to care about her. While Skye’s (Chloe Bennet) allegiance keeps shifting back and forth, she remains the only character aside from Agent Coulson, who’s wrapped up in some bigger mystery.

Fans were in an uproar when it was announced that angel-turned-human Castiel would be getting a love interest for "Supernatural" Season 9. As if viewers didn't hate April Kelly (played by Shannon Lucio) enough already, these first look photos from her episode, "I'm No Angel," will only add fuel to the fire.
The CW just released the photos from episode 3 airing Tuesday (Oct. 22), and Cas' life as a human is about to get extremely complicated. He's homeless, hunted by angels, and alone. "The last time we saw Castiel talking with Dean, Dean said, 'Get your ass to the bunker.' I think Castiel has taken that to heart, but the issue is he can't fly, he has very little money, so how is he going to do this?" executive producer Jeremy Carver tells Zap2it. "Part of the struggle we see him dealing with when we pick up with him again...

Leviathans and the apocalypse are about to seem easy compared to Castiel’s newest tribulations in Supernatural‘s Season 9, which premieres tonight at 9/8c on The CW.
For the first time, the angel-turned-lowly human finds himself battling everyday tasks like brushing one’s teeth and managing one’s bladder. But there’s one aspect of life he may not be able to control (hint: it takes place in the bedroom).
Then there are all the fallen angels out for Cas’ head, which means he and the Winchesters may be keeping their distance, star Misha Collins reveals in the chat below.

Tony Parker apologizes for gay slur, Scott Lively sees homosexuality as bringing End Times, Jim Parsons talks filming The Normal Heart
Tony Parker, who used be married to Eva Longoria, is apologizing for using a gay slur in a Eurobasket press conference. No, you didn't read that headline wrong, and no, that wasn't a typo. "Supernatural's" angel-turned-human Castiel is getting a love interest this season.
The CW's long-running hit series just cast "The O.C." alum Shannon Lucio to woo the fan-favorite character, TVLine reports. She will guest star as April Kelly, and will first show up in Season 9′s third episode, airing Oct. 22.
Seriously, Lucio got to romance Benjamin McKenzie's Ryan Atwood and now Misha Collins' Cas? Some girls just get all the luck.
This is the first time Cas will get some action on the series after five seasons -- though he did learn a few things from "the pizza boy" to impress Meg the demon before Crowley dispatched her once and for all last season.
Are you excited to see Cas get a love interest? Let us know in the comments below.

Next week in Miami, hundreds of bloggers, marketers, corporate brand reps, music and film artists will be checking in at the Eden Roc Hotel to attend Hispanicize, a social media platform for today’s Latino innovators. Now in its 4th year, the marketing, interactive, film and music conference was founded by Manny Ruiz, a PR businessman who adopted the term Hispanicize to signify the transformation and growing impact of Latino culture into traditional American mainstream and who created this convergence to amplify the success of diverse voices in social media.
In part modeled after SXSW and Ted Talks, Hispanicize aims to be a digital multi-media launchpad and idea stimulating conference tailored towards Latinos. The event’s core journalistic DNA is confirmed by guest co-chair, Soledad O Brien, who just signed off on her morning CNN show capping off a decade of reporting for the news outlet. For the second year the South Beach setting will host yacht parties, beachside receptions, breakfast and lunch networking, and 100 plus talks, featuring such entrepreneurs in social media like the Latina Mom Bloggers, panels like How Brands and Agencies are Engaging and Collaborating with Latino Bloggers and Getting on Corporate Boards. The heavily sponsored event, (Procter & Gamble is the presenting sponsor) will include a Diversity Tech Leaders Summit presented by Sprint in which the lesser-known business stories of diverse tech and social media entrepreneurs who are making their marks in digital media will be highlighted.
I have to admit I knew nothing of Hispanicize up until a couple months ago. Curious, I went on the website and I found the lingo a tad superfluous and hyperbolic. Words like iconic and mighty are used to describe the young but clearly flourishing event. Then again, this kind of grandiose speak is typical Public Relations so it makes sense given it is a partnership with Hispanic Public Relations Association (Hpra) and the Public Relations Society of America (Prsa).
I reached out to the founder Manny Ruiz to find out more about the mission of the event and found his enthusiasm and excitement for what he considers a pioneering movement infectious. It’s hard to argue that this mass tech and entertainment crossroads gathering makes for an incredible networking opportunity. Ruiz called it a “Uniting of these industries to create a symphony” and went on to note it is much more powerful for bloggers to converge at the same place with journalists, marketers, digital, music and film innovators then if you had them out there individually and remotely. Before I knew it I was put in touch with with Roman Morales, the Film Showcase Organizer and I came onboard as Programmer for the film component. A big reason I stepped in was because I was particularly attracted to presenting Us independent Latino films to an audience heavy with social media influence and bloggers, to see if it would indeed create a higher level of buzz, publicity and exposure from the community.
Along with a special screening of Filly Brown days before its national theatrical release, this year Hispanicize will screen six features including the high profile sneak preview of The Weinstein Company’s Aftershock, the horror comedy produced and starring Eli Roth, directed by Chilean filmmaker Nicolas Lopez (Que Pena tu Vida, Promedio Rojo). Also, straight from SXSW the music industry and character-driven documentary Los Wild Ones about the Wild Records label and family of Mexican rockabilly acts. With the exception of Aftershock, all the films reflect a taste of the diaspora of unique, bi-cultural Us narratives, and notably are all first features. Three of the films, Blaze You Out, Filly Brown and Mission Park are being distributed by Lionsgate labels Pantelion and Grindstone Entertainment. Meanwhile, seeking distribution is Dreamer written and directed by Salvador born Jesse Salmeron, a poignant and timely story starring and produced by Jeremy Ray Valdez about an upwardly mobile American whose paralyzed by the fear of being deported. Los Wild Ones is also seeking distribution and should find considerable traction within and outside hard core music fan circles.
My personal pride and joy however has to be the shorts film showcase. Portraying visionary quests for identity, love, truth and legacy and created by multicultural emergent voices from San Antonio, Miami, La, NYC, Oaxaca and Puerto Rico. This is the medium in which to find provocative, daring and versatile young generation of fresh voices who you can expect will blow up big soon. To name just a few, the filmmakers include Jillian Mayer and Lucas Leyva of the Borscht corporation, Zoé Salicrup Junco, the filmmaker of Gabi who workshopped her feature script of the short at San Antonio’s CineFestival’s Latino Screenwriters Project, Victor Hugo Duran the Colombia Film grad whose short, Fireworks played at the La Film Festival last year and is currently shooting his first feature in Mexico called La Victoria, and Steve Acevedo, the director of El Cocodrilo which is a powerful and urgent film about a journalist played by Jacob Vargas on the run from narcos, who participated in NBCU Directing Fellowship.
I’ll try not to go all Spring Breaker debauchery when I head to Miami next week. I’m very interested in immersing myself in the Hispanicize program to cover the dialogue and scrutinize the impact so stay tuned for my report.
See below to check out full film list and links. Hispanicize will take place April 9 – 13. For information on how to attend and the schedule click here.

Usually, Lone Star Cinema focuses on a movie that you can watch on DVD, VOD and/or online. The idea is in fact to tell you about its availability as well as its local or Texas connections, so you can take another look at the film and perhaps find more enjoyment by noticing that hey, that's the old Governor's Mansion and that's the Astrodome and that's a young Sonny Carl Davis.
But this time I want to write about a movie you can't see, not yet, and have only been able to catch at a few festivals. I caught Satellite of Love at Dallas International Film Festival in March, and I didn't have the time to write fully about it then, and figured a little summary in a dispatch would be sufficient. But it screened again at the Hill Country Film Festival, and by that point I realized the movie...

This turns out to be sometime in the past, presumably while the characters were best friends in college. We flash-forward to a period of time after graduation. Samuel has become a musician and bohemian of the world; Catherine and Blake got married, now they run a restaurant (which Austinites will recognize as Justine's) together. The threesome might have been BFFs in college, but Catherine and Blake have taken a decidedly different path in life than Samuel. Catherine and Blake are initially stand-offish when Samuel returns home, obviously still sore from Samuel not attending their wedding. As an apology for his absence at their wedding,...

On a surface level, Fireflies in the Garden looks like a film that could easily be ignored amongst the myriad of options that filmgoers have to choose from. Cheesy tagline, a poster reminiscent of a Lifetime Channel movie, and Ryan Reynolds with a beard, which means he'll be serious and not that funny. As life should have taught us all by now, you never judge a book by its cover and Fireflies in the Garden is a good example why. Illustrating the sad and unfortunate way that life has a tendency of being when it shows a family what's really important, this film examines how one family deals with the pain of a sudden loss -- the loss of the one piece of the family that didn't deserve to leave in the first place.
Michael Taylor (Reynolds) is a famous author on a plane to visit his home for his sister's college graduation.

Director Dennis Lee talks Fireflies in the Garden, starring Ryan Reynolds. Three summers ago, I was in Berlin on vacation, when I happened to see Fireflies in the Garden, Dennis Lee's feature debut. Now, most directors don't land the likes of Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds, and Willem Dafoe in their first film, but most films with Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds, and Willem Dafoe don't have a hard time finding their way into theaters in the United States. Due to a countless collection of reasons, however, which included the film's original distributor essentially going under, "Fireflies" is only now seeing the inside of American multiplexes, years after it's played International markets. The film spans two different time periods in a Midwestern family. Reynolds is Michael, a successful author of romances who has stayed as far away as possible from his domineering father, Charlie (Dafoe), but who has returned to watch...

On October 14th, a film is coming your way that deconstructs dysfunction in a way few efforts have dared. Fireflies in the Garden is the story of a seemingly regular family with a less than normal background reality.
You might not guess it from the trailer actually, but the family is, to outward appearances, rather standard. Successful, but rather normal. As we dig deeper, it comes to light that our family is perhaps a bit less normal than we might expect, and the relationships are far more complex than anyone would have guessed.
With Ryan Reynolds, Julia Roberts, and Willem Dafoe as our main focus, the film has to weather a lot of expectation, and it looks as though it might have a decent chance at delivering.
Take a look below, and let me know what you think. It's clearly not the sort of thing that jumps to the top of everyone's list,...
