The animated X-Men are about to make their return to TV in "X-Men '97." This Disney+ series is basically a thirty-year-late sixth season of 1992's "X-Men," the first cartoon about the Marvel Comics superhero team.
The "X-Men" comics kept chugging along through highs and lows while their animated counterparts were in limbo, though. At SXSW 2024, Marvel previewed the comics' future. A relaunch is coming to "X-Men" in Summer 2024 under the banner "From The Ashes," the follow-up to the ongoing "Fall of X." There'll be three primary series at first:
"X-Men" by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman. Cyclops and Magneto will lead a traditional X-Men superhero team based in Alaska.
"Uncanny X-Men" by Gail Simone and David Marquez. "Outlaw" lovebirds Gambit and Rogue head to New Orleans with Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee in tow.
"Extraordinary X-Men" by Eve Ewing and Carmen Carnero. Set in Chicago, Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost...

The origins of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" begin with the X-Men. A young Joss Whedon read their comic adventures, penned by Chris Claremont, and cites them as an influence on his work; teen heroine Buffy Summers herself is in the vein of Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat.
From 2004 to 2008, Whedon wrote the ongoing comic "Astonishing X-Men," teaming up with artist John Cassaday. Consider the timeframe: "Buffy" and "Angel" had wrapped as classics, "Firefly" was a freshly canceled-too-soon martyr, and Whedon hadn't cracked into the blockbuster movie mainstream with "The Avengers" yet, and allegations of his abusive behavior on set hadn't yet been publicized. His writing an "X-Men" comic felt like nerdy stars aligning.
Is "Astonishing X-Men" worth checking out? It's short and self-contained, which are rare blessings in superhero comics. Whedon also works overtime to repair the reputation of Scott Summers/Cyclops. In the concurrent "X-Men" movies, he was used only...

It’s taken 10 films, but we finally get to see Wolverine in a comics-accurate costume. Ryan Reynolds took to Instagram to share the first official photo from the set of Deadpool 3, showing off not just co-star Hugh Jackman’s return to his career-making role as Logan, but his wearing of the character’s iconic yellow-and-blue uniform.
Jackman has portrayed Wolverine in nine films, between the original X-Men trilogy, his solo trilogy, and a trio of diminishing-returns First Class entries. Through all that time, the closest we got to a comic-accurate depiction of Wolverine’s attire was the naked Weapon X scene from the forgettable X-Men: Apocalypse. A scene cut from 2013’s The Wolverine saw the character receiving the yellow-and-brown costume from the ’80s, but even that was just a tease.
Now, however, we finally get to see the quintessential Wolverine actor in the quintessential Wolverine outfit. The particular design...

A new clip from the upcoming Disney+ mini series “Secret Invasion” was released online Thursday, and in addition to the espionage-related paranoia and suspicion featured in the clip itself, it also gave fans a chance to do some spycraft of their own just to watch the thing.
The clip — what feels like an entire scene from the show, featuring Martin Freeeman as ex-CIA agent Everett Ross — wasn’t posted to YouTube or on Twitter. Instead, Marvel Studios’ official Twitter account asked fans to decipher a mystery board that revealed a password to the site “theinvasionhasbegun.com,” allowing them to unlock an “encrypted” file on the site.

DC Comics have of late been celebrating the 80th anniversary of both a flagship title, in Action Comics, and their flagship character, Superman. Both are, of course, fully worthy of such accolades. Action Comics has been continuously published since the dawn of the comic book industry, and without Superman there would possibly be no comic book industry. He was the spark that lit the flame. I have already reviewed DC’s 80 Years of Superman book, which was a love letter to every decade of Superman’s adventures, cherry picking some of the many high points from the 1930′s to the present day. It was very much a look back at Action Comics greatest hits, and a great reminder it was too. But what about the future?

Love him or hate him, you have to acknowledge that every superhero you admire today owes their existence to the Man of Steel – and it all started back in 1938 with the release of Action Comics #1. In those pages, we saw the debut of Superman, who soon went on to completely take over that title and headline an ongoing series of his own.
Originally created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Big Blue has since inspired fans in radio productions, animation, live action cinema and especially the realm of television, which is seemingly never bereft of Kal-El or his supporting characters for too long.
Not surprisingly, DC Comics intend on honoring his enduring legacy this spring with the historic release of Action Comics #1000, the first comic book to organically reach that milestone. (Face it, Deadpool‘s tongue-in-cheek thousandth issue doesn’t count.) And as such, it obviously won’t be your average twenty-odd page release.

Over the past couple years the X-Men comics have gone through major story lines and the team dismantled and reassembled in many forms. Since 2012 Marvel event Avengers vs. X-Men comic sales for this beloved franchise went on a decline. Majority of fans believed that Marvel Studios wanted the series to do poorly and fans to forget about the X-Men so the Fox would give up rights to the movie franchise. Although that was speculation the plan never worked since Fox was successful with Days of Future Past and Apocalypse. Since late last week, there have been enough teaser images for Secret Empire to cause Steve Rogers to haunt peoples’ dreams. In fact, we posted a new gallery of images just this morning that hinted at the involvement of Spider-Man, the Avengers, the Champions, the Defenders, the Guardians of the Galaxy and the X-Men.
Now, thanks to what is no doubt the best teaser Marvel has distributed thus far, those suspicions were confirmed via some stunning artwork from John Cassaday and Paul Mounts. Somewhat mirroring the “Divide We Stand” image that was used to hype last fall’s Marvel Now! relaunch, the “United We Stand” piece brings together Old Man Logan, Black Panther, Captain America Steve Rogers, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Rocket, Black Bolt, Black Widow and Deadpool.

Earlier this week, Variety broke the news that Lucasfilm is currently testing for a lead actress in the Han Solo spin-off. According to the trade, Tessa Thompson, Naomi Scott, and Zoe Kravitz have all auditioned for the role. In case you aren’t keeping track, none of those actresses are white. As the untitled Han Solo project is a prequel starring Alden Ehrenreich as the young smuggler, fans familiar with Marvel’s Star Wars comics series immediately deduced the female lead could be Sana Solo (née Starros). You know, Han Solo’s wife. Image Credit: Marvel Entertainment Okay, so there’s some debate over the legality of said marriage. As many of you already know, Joss Whedon worked with Marvel Comics writing a run of Astonishing X-Men that brought Colossus back and introduced several other X-Men characters. He’s done a good amount of work for the company in past, and now he’s coming back to write another comic for them to celebrate Captain America’s 75th anniversary.
ComicBook.com confirmed with Marvel that Whedon will be re-teaming with John Cassaday, who worked with the writer on reviving Astonishing X-Men. The report gives the following information:
Appearing in Captain America: Sam Wilson #7, the two will tell an all-new story celebrating the legacy and legend of Captain America. The issue will also feature a main story from series creative team Nick Spencer & Daniel Acuna, and another backup by Greg Rucka & Mike Perkins.
This wouldn’t be Cassaday’s first time working with Cap either. He did the art...

Marvel’s Star Wars comic, featuring the continuing adventures of Luke, Han, Leia, etc. in the time following A New Hope and before The Empire Strikes Back, is clearly positioned as the flagship series of the company’s line of Star Wars ongoing, limited, and one shot series. Yet for all the top-notch artists that have worked on the series and exciting moments that have unfolded in its pages, it has consistently played second fiddle in terms of pure quality to its sister series, Darth Vader. Comic books starring super-villains are routinely difficult to pull off, but in the fourteen issues released in 2015, Darth Vader has stood head and shoulders above the rest of the line. Here, then, are five reasons it is the best of Marvel’s Star Wars books.
Darth Vader is the Hero
Not to be confused with “Darth Vader is a hero”, because he’s not.

A good annual needs to do one of two things: tell a story featuring the series’ regular characters that is bigger than any one regular issue could contain, or use the opportunity provided by a non-regular issue to do something completely outside the norm of the series. Star Wars Annual #1 takes the latter approach, showcasing the fight against the Empire in a completely different way, sidelining all of the regular characters (except Leia, who only appears via holographic communication) and plotlines but keeping with the overall tone of the series. The end result is a fun, somewhat slight, story that deepens the Star Wars comic book universe.

The second chapter of the “Vader Down” crossover between Marvel’s Darth Vader and Star Wars books, this issue makes it clear that this is going to be a narrowly-focused story – that is, chiefly concerned with one specific narrative rather than a story spanning multiple threads across multiple books. That said, regular series creators Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca turn in an exciting second chapter of the story, one which moves the overall narrative forward (however incrementally) but also puts the spotlight on the book’s regular supporting cast.
In the aftermath of Vader crashing onto the planet Vrogas Vas in Vader Down #1, this issue finds the Rebels stationed on the planet (along with the newly-arrived Han and Leia, making their first appearances in this series and thus giving...

Star Wars #7

Published by Marvel Comics
After the stunning revelation last issue that the loveable rogue Han Solo is a married man, Star Wars #7 takes a break from the ongoing storyline to tell a flashback story from Obi Wan Kenobi’s journal that Luke Skywalker discovered in issue six. Obi Wan Kenobi is one of the few characters to link both the prequel and original trilogy and has been played by two of the greatest actors of their respective generations. So his comic should be filled with insights into one of the last survivors of the Jedi era, some hooded lightsaber fights, and Sand People?
Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Most of the comic is taken up with Obi Wan’s inner monologue, which is predominantly whining until the end when he bumps into a young Luke.

Writing a Boba Fett fight scene must be tricky, due to the disconnect between his portrayal in the films and everywhere else. On screen, there’s not much to Boba Fett. In Empire Strikes Back, the audience is told he’s dangerous but he doesn’t really do much but look cool, and then in Return of the Jedi, he has brief fight with Luke before a jet pack malfunction sends him to his seeming death inside the Sarlaac Pit (An “over-reliance on technology” message George Lucas would repeat with Boba’s dad in Attack of the Clones). From the films alone, Boba Fett is a cool looking character with a great reputation who, at best, doesn’t do much and, at worse, is kind of a chump.

Boba Fett is, essentially, the Star Wars’ universe version of Wolverine, two tremendously popular characters who built their following on the basis of a cool image, a mysterious past, and a tough guy mindset, whose popularity grew to the point that they came to dominate their respective franchises while everything that made them intriguing in the first place suffered for their ubiquity. That said, good stories can still be told featuring both characters, and with this issue, Jason Aaron and John Cassaday set out to prove it with Boba Fett.

Astonishing X-Men “Gifted” is one of those storylines that will make long term X-Men fans purr with delight beginning the Claremont era flashbacks in issue one. (Cassaday mimics Byrne’s art quite well.) It also can turn fans (like me five years ago) of the films and cartoons into mutie and comics junkies. Whedon pays homage to older X-Men stories without getting mired in continuity and quickly places his own stamp on the franchise by creating a new alien foe for them (Ord of the Breakworld), exploring the mutant as outsider metaphor with the cure of the X-gene, giving Shield a new branch (Sword), and also bringing a beloved character back from the dead (Colossus) in a touching, visceral way that serves the long term storyline. However, the best part of...

For example, the cover for Star Wars #6, revealed on Twitter today by series writer Jason Aaron. What kind of scope is are we peering through and just who out of a large rogues gallery could be targeting young Skywalker? Image Credit: Marvel Entertaiment via Twitter. Cover by John Cassaday. As of right now, there are no bounty hunters in the current Star Wars arc. But there are two issues to go before the series reaches the big finale for the first story in Star Wars #6. As part of the new Expanded Universe of Star Wars, Marvel has several on-going comics involving the cast the original trilogy. Princess Leia and Darth Vader both have their own titles, while the adventures of the whole gang are chronicled in “Star Wars.” Written by Jason Aaron with art by John Cassaday, “Star Wars” follow Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, and the droids as they plot to keep the Empire off-balance after the defeat of the first Death Star.
