Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2014 discoveries”…
Bob Tarasuk: I have been reading quite a number of true survival stories lately. ‘Unbroken,’ ‘Life in a Jar,’ and ‘Miracle in The Andies‘ are great books. I was blown away by Mark Ronson’s ‘Uptown Funk‘ performed by Bruno Mars. The video is amazing.
Lavallee: In 2009/2010 you were approached by a young European filmmaker to be the subject of a short film. Could you describe that first encounter with Diego, and ultimately how you were sold on the idea of being the titular figure in the short.
Tarasuk: When Diego moved to The Berkshires, we quickly became friends and enjoyed hanging out at parties and at my farm. When he approached me about making the short film I naturally said yes, not really having any idea what was to come. I had a great time making the short and exploring ‘Bob’ the character.

Sampling has always been a key component of hip-hop, but while most people think of producers and beat makers digging through dusty crates of records looking for the perfect snippet to mix into their aural collage, that only tells half the story. Many of hip-hop’s best and brightest have been profoundly influenced by the movies too, and a lot of tracks will sample dialogue from cult classics or rework a theme song into a beat, or in the case of Immortal Technique’s Goonies Never Die, do a bit of all of the above while espousing his love for one of our favorite childhood flicks. Warning: These Songs Are Not Safe for Work This got us thinking: What are some other hip-hop tracks that love the movies? To answer that question, we’ve put together a little list...

Eric Victorino is mad as hell. The commercial music industry is a money making machine indifferent to necessity for creative control, and The Limousines are not gonna take it anymore. Eric and his artistic partner, Gio Giusti, have turned to their fans via the crowdfunding site Kickstarter.com to raise the money needed to mix and press their next record, Hush.
The Owl Mag: Your story of leaving your record label strikes a similar note to stories of soldiers refusing to return to duty. Do you consider yourself to be a music industry conscientious objector and refusenik?
Victorino: That's a great way to look at it. Except we're soldiers who have an awful lot of fight left in us. We're down with kicking ass, we just want to do it on our terms now.

The movie industry has never known what to do with rap music. But from Nwa to Odb, the extreme lives of its stars offer epic stories for the big screen
'Are you the one?" asks the trailer. In March last year, the Los Angeles production company Morgan Creek put out an online casting call, seeking an unknown to play the part of "poet … rapper … actor … revolutionary … legend …" Tupac Shakur. Anyone could apply by submitting footage of themselves reading a scene from the script and rapping to one of Shakur's songs. The director is Antoine Fuqua, best known for the movie Training Day, and the movie's producers include Shakur's mother. The casting call received thousands of applications, which makes for some hilarious viewing on YouTube, but the question of who could fill the shoes of one of rap's biggest personalities is indicative of a bigger problem for the movies: that they...

Music fans, rest assured. Tom Cruise, a bunch of garish costumes and set design, and the hair metal tunes from "Rock Of Ages" won't be your only option this weekend at the movies. For those looking for a more satisfying musical outing, head to your local arthouse for "Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap," a documentary that explores the birth of hip hop and how it has turned into a global phenomenon.
Premiering earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, the film is co-directed by Ice-t and Andy Baybutt ("The Band Aid Story") and takes an in-depth look at the craft of rhyming, with interviews from some of the biggest stars in rap, including Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Caz, Nas, Mos Def, Eminem, Chuck D, Krs-One, Run-dmc, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg. In the wake of Minaj's feud with Hot 97, MTV News examines what real hip-hop is and who gets to decide.
By Rob Markman

A funny thing happened on the way to Summer Jam. All hip-hop hell broke loose after an off-the-cuff comment by a radio DJ led rap's reigning queen to pull out of the year's biggest rap concert. Nicki Minaj versus Hot 97 has no doubt become the biggest rap gossip of the week, but once the drama subsides, an eternal discussion will still linger: What is real hip-hop? And who gets to decide?
In one corner there's rap purist and Hot 97 radio personality Peter Rosenberg, who trashed Nicki's RedOne-produced crossover machine "Starships" in front of concertgoers just hours before she was scheduled to take the stage. In the other corner there is Nicki Minaj, whose pop success...

Immortal Technique performed at the Occupy May Day rally at Union Square in New York Tuesday, in arguably the most impassioned performance of the afternoon's lineup, which included Tom Morello, Dan Deacon and Das Racist. He performed "Leaving the Past" and "Toast to the Dead," the former of which was particularly critical in the Ows context.
"I've never seen so much racism in all of my life, every program and newscast, all of them white," he rapped. "It's like apartheid with 10 percent ruling the rest."

Dan Deacon performed at the Occupy May Day rally in New York Tuesday alongside Tom Morello, Immortal Technique and Das Racist. Deacon took a creative approach that played well with the crowd at Union Square, instructing them to create one large circle and guiding them in an interpretive dance.
"Trust me on this," Deacon said. "I know I don't look like the most trustworthy person but I'll try to change that."
Watch Deacon play two songs -- "Of The Mountains" and "Truth Rush" -- and tune in at the two-minute mark for said interpretive dancing:

Tom Morello and his "guitarmy" led the Occupy Wall Street masses from Bryant Park down to lower Manhattan in New York on Tuesday, stopping to perform for a captive audience in Union Square, alongside Dan Deacon, Immortal Technique and Das Racist.
"Shall I teach you the words to 'Worldwide Rebel Songs' and we all sing it together?" Morello asked the crowd, which hummed with agreement. "Alright, it goes like this."

NextMovie is onto something with their Rapper Reviews series, a kind of Rotten Tomatoes 'n the hood in which various rappers critique movies selected for their appraisal based on a gimmicky connection they share. For instance, Immortal Technique reviewed Immortals, and Mc Hammer gave us "a piece of the game" on Thor, truly a match made in hammer-pun heaven. The latest installment comes to us courtesy of Brooklyn rappers M.O.P. (Mash Out Posse), straight outta Mike Tyson's old literal stomping grounds of Brownsville. M.O.P. reviewing The Muppets is like Wu Tang offering their two cents on Puss in Boots, for which we can still cross out fingers. So if you're still on the fence about seeing Jason Segel's resurrection of Jim Henson's brainchild, Billy Danze and Lil' Fame's breakdown of the "very dope" family film may [...]...

I've said it before: Next Movie's "Rappers Review Movies" video series is ingenious. The latest rhymer to play Ebert with Hollywood's new releases is NYC-based Immortal Technique, a lyricist who frequently uses his songs to draw attention to socio-economic and political disparities. Taking on Tarsem's Greek actioner Immortals, he drops some serious conscious commentary on even greater issues: Namely, how much Clash of the Titans and the next-gen Star Wars movies totally sucked. Preach!

Sure, if you want to know if "Immortals" is worth checking out this weekend, you could head over to Rotten Tomatoes, where you'd find, as of Friday afternoon, the 3-D epic with just a 39-percent freshness rating. Or, hey, you could wait for a buddy to fork over his cash and then ask him if you, too, should pony up at the multiplex. Fine solutions, all.
But why do any of these things when you can simply turn to rapper-activist Immortal Technique for the lowdown on "Immortals"? It's all thanks to our friends over at NextMovie, who have previously invited Mc Hammer to review "Thor" and "Insane Clown Posse" to judge "Water for Elephants." So hit play on the video below for Immortal Technique's thoughts on why Mickey Rourke is the "illest bad guy" and his lamentation that the film's only sex scene is G rated.

When readers questioned why there was so little coverage from the news organization at that point, NPR News Executive Editor Dick Meyer replied, “The recent protests on Wall Street did not involve large numbers of people, prominent people, a great disruption, or an especially clear objective.”

The 8th annual touring rap festival Rock The Bells announced it's lineup today, and it will be headlined by Lauryn Hill who coincidentally celebrates her 36th birthday today. Lauryn Hill, Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep and Cypress Hill — this year's Rock the Bells festival looks to be a hip-hop fan's dream.
Last year Guerilla Union invited headlining artists to play their classic albums in full for concertgoers, and it looks land they are continuing the trend for 2011. During the four festival dates, which kick off in San Bernardino, California, on August 20 at the San Manuel Amphitheater, Lauryn Hill is scheduled to play her 1998 multi-platinum, Grammy-winning The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill from beginning to end. Nas is tapped to perform his 1994 classic, Illmatic.
"For years, people have been asking me to do Illmatic in so many ways, from stage plays to movies to books, but the time wasn't right. Where music is going now, the time is right," Nas said in a statement.

Acts such as Nas, Rage Against the Machine, Jay-z, Busta Rhymes and two of this year's headliners, A Tribe Called Quest and the Wu-Tang Clan, have all set foot on the main stage in the previous six outings of Rtb. Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest and DJ Premier have been added to the 2010 Rock the Bells bill, joining a lineup that already includes such legendary acts as the Wu-Tang Clan, Rakim, Krs-One, and Slick Rick.
As part of a novel concept this year, all of the participants will perform one seminal album from their catalog in its entirety, with the exception of Premier, who will instead lead a tribute to his late Gangstarr music partner, Guru. (The Mc died in April of cancer-related causes.)
Also joining the festivities is Lauryn Hill. The former Fugees frontwoman was announced as a "special guest" last month, but Hill's involvement in the show was clarified on Tuesday (June 8). Hill is slated to perform her now-classic debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
