John Stevens, a former American Idol contestant, was struck by a van while jogging in Chelsea, Massachusetts last week.
Stevens – who was later treated at Massachusetts General Hospital before being taken to Buffalo, New York to recuperate with his parents – suffered a fractured skull, broken arm and deafness in his right ear.
According to the Boston Globe, the accident occurred outside of a crosswalk, in the evening, when Stevens was jogging with ear buds in. A witness reportedly told police that the driver of the van was not speeding.
Police have reportedly decided not to bring charges against the driver.

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

If there was a doctor in the house during Tuesday night’s American Idol telecast, he or she really should’ve rushed the stage at the 1:22 marker and called the official time of death for criticism. That was seconds after J.Lo, Randy, and Steven used words like “beautiful,” “mad cool” and “good job” to describe a performance that found “adorable” Eben Franckewitz wreaking havoc on Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain” like a baby doing its worst to a diaper.

You can’t teach an old Dawg new vocabulary words, but pretty much everything else on American Idol‘s daft, delightful tenth season is subject to frequent, sometimes thrilling change. On Wednesday night’s Elton John-themed performance telecast, Naima Adedapo and Stefano Langone adopted unexpected and unusual accents. Ryan Seacrest got a daring (unfortunate?) new ‘do, and one contestant was allowed to utter the phrase “hardcore bangage” without so much as a bleep. Heck, even Nigel Lythgoe embraced the mood, putting his favorite punching bag Haley Reinhart in the pimp spot and not dousing her with a bucket of...

NBC has become the second broadcast network to announce their plans for the summer of 2011. On the Peacock's agenda are new seasons of America's Got Talent and The Marriage Ref, as well as new reality shows The Voice, It's Worth That? (think The Price is Right meets Pawn Stars), Still Standing (a trivia show), and Love in the Wild (basically The Bachelor meets Survivor). Additionally, NBC will continue to air new episodes of newly revamped Law & Order: La, along with the final seasons of Friday Night Lights and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
There's no mention of Love Bites, Friends with Benefits, or The Paul Reiser Show, so we can safely say that none of the three will be seeing the light of day anytime soon. You can check the press release below for dates and times of the shows that NBC will be airing this summer.

The premiere of American Idol‘s hotly anticipated/anxiety-inducing tenth season is only a day away, and like a contestant on Bridalplasty, the show will be debuting a radically different face when its veil gets lifted this Wednesday at 8/7c.
It remains to be seen whether or not all the widely reported changes will ultimately reinvigorate or eviscerate Fox’s veteran ratings juggernaut, but regardless, I’ve got a little extra advice that I think will boost the chances that 2011 will be remembered as the year Idol got its groove back. Without further ado…

The Season 10 premiere of "American Idol" is less than a week away and to make the days go by a bit faster, Zap2it decided to take a stroll down memory lane and re-evaluate the previous nine seasons.
Each day leading up to the premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 19, we will post a retrospective on each season. We're breaking it down into four categories: Best Performance, Worst Performance, Most Underrated Idol and most Overrated Idol. At the end, we will decide how the season stacks up against the rest, rating it as great, good, or not-so-good.
We've looked back at Season 1 (yay Kelly!) and Season 2 (aww, Clay and Ruben!) and now it's time to take a look back at the black hole of "American Idol." And don't even try to act like that's not a true statement in the year where Fantasia beat Diana DeGarmo.

As American Idol’s season 10 cattle-call auditions continue — the show stopped yesterday in New Orleans, and will head to New Jersey next week — and the September call-back rounds in front of the judges draw closer, speculation is heating up about who will fill the Simon Cowell Memorial Chair. According to The Hollywood Reporter, former executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, who left the show prior to its eighth season, is thisclose to signing a deal to return to that position for season 10 (alongside Ken Warwick, Simon Fuller, and Cecile Frot-Coutaz); what makes that news especially juicy is the fact that Lythgoe went...

Lee Dewyze has been crowned the season nine champion of American Idol (TV). Before his dreams came true, the hard-working Chicago native worked as a paint salesman in Mount Prospect, Illinois. Week after week, the crooner stood out from his competition and won the hearts of the judges and America. Check out the final thoughts from the judges on Dewyze's new single "Beautiful Day," a song by U2: Kara DioGuardi: "You've grown the most on this show...you deserve to be here tonight." Randy Jackson: "This with the high notes in the chorus you sounded good." Simon Cowell: "This is what the competition was designed for." Ellen DeGeneres: "I'm so proud of you. You did a great job." In a recent press call, American Idol (TV) winner Lee Dewyze talked about working with past winners and shares some of the advice they had given him.

Though it's not at all surprising, it's now official: Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze will square off against one another in the finale of the ninth season of "American Idol." After sending away Casey James' haircut on Wednesday (May 19), the final two were left on the stage. Will America choose the quirky Bowersox or the hunky DeWyze? Will Bowersox become the first woman to win the show since Jordin Sparks a million years ago? Or will DeWyze continue the streak of men dominating the "American Idol" landscape?
No matter who comes out as the winner, one thing is for certain: This finale may be the weakest in the history of "American Idol." It's possible that Bowersox and DeWyze can pull off something special next week, but it would take a great deal to elevate them higher than the last spot on this list. Here are the eight other final...

"American Idol" finalist Siobhan Magnus has nabbed the Vote for the Worst title now that Tim Urban is gone, which tells us that Vftw has completely lost their street cred in our opinion.
Vftw has been around since Season 3 of "Idol," when it actually backed Jennifer Hudson very early on in the semi-finals (oops!), but quickly turned to red-headed crooner John Stevens. They also managed to land Scott Savol in the Top 5 of Season 4, Kevin Covais in the Top 11 of Season 5 and (most notably) Sanjaya Malakar in the Top 7 of Season 6.
This season, we could not argue with their choice of Tim Urban (though we do take umbrage with their inherent purpose). He didn't even originally make the Top 24 and he clearly was going to last a long time despite very mediocre performances because he is super cute and, well, we all know who really votes for this show, so let's move on.

The Lennon-McCartney songbook is back (to where it once belonged) tonight on American Idol. Hopefully it'll be a little more Carly Smithson "Blackbird" than Kristy Lee Cook "Eight Days a Week." But no matter what hijinks or horror await us tonight, I'm forging ahead and updating the current season 9 rankings. Won't you do the same by voting for your favorite contestant in our Power List poll? (Related: 'American Idol': Catching up With 13 Former Contestants!; for more Idol coverage, follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak.) 9.Tim Urban (Last week No. 9): In his defense, the permanent bottom-three fixture generally sings in tune,...

Hollywood Week begins tonight on American Idol, and over the next two weeks, we'll see 181 Golden Ticket recipients whittled down to 24 semifinalists. There'll be tears. There'll be fights. There'll be Ellen DeGeneres in the Paula Abdul Memorial Chair! But before we get there, I'm going to count down the top 20 contestants from the last four weeks of auditions, and then ask you to vote for your fave in the handy poll that's embedded after the jump. Just Fyi, I had to leave off karaoke hostess Danelle Hayes, who reportedly ended up not going to Hollywood, and I took the liberty...

Before his final season kicks off, we've compiled the judge's wittiest slams.
By James Montgomery
Simon Cowell

Over the past eight seasons of "American Idol," Simon Cowell has been an endless fount of witticisms, put-downs and downright bizarre metaphors (to ginger-haired troubadour John Stevens, in season three: "You and Latin music go together like chocolate ice cream and an onion"). He's crushed dreams, broken egos and — in at least one instance that we can remember — suggested a contestant get a job hooking down on the docks.
Needless to say, we've enjoyed every minute of it. Charming, delightfully cheeky, alarmingly spiteful but always honest in his assessments, Cowell was the gift that just kept on giving. Now, as he embarks on his ninth — and, sadly, last — season behind the judges' table, we decided it was time to say, "Thanks for the memories." So we've compiled a...

Over the course of eight stupendous seasons, "American Idol" has showcased some of the best undiscovered singers in the country and a few who, well, were probably better left that way.
There have been plenty of highs and just as many lows. So, in celebration of Wednesday night's (May 20) Lambert vs. Allen finale, we're taking a look back at some of those who came before them — and were quickly forgotten. Because while there have been plenty of "Idol" also-rans who were really good, there are just as many who weren't. And really, we'll remember them a lot longer than the talented ones.
So here's a look back at some folks who reached for the stars (even though they probably shouldn't have) and didn't let a little thing...
