As some of the lists of the previous years were not on par with the ones we have been publishing lately, we decided to take a closer look at some of the years that were not as covered at the time. In that fashion, here is a list with the 50 of the Best Asian movies of 2015, in completely random order.

Two-part extravaganzas have always been huge gambles for their creative teams. Hollywood is no stranger to shooting back-to-back sequels, from “The Matrix” to “The Hobbit” to Netflix's recent “Rebel Moon” saga, and Asian cinema has followed a similar path. John Woo split his expansive Han Dynasty battle epic “Red Cliff” in two for much of its worldwide distribution, while Bollywood's “Gangs of Wasseypur”(with its initial 319 minute runtime) has seen many iterations, first as two films, then as eight much shorter episodes for its Netflix distribution. In all of these cases, there is a gravitas that comes with the filmmaker's vision, bursting with ideas and flourishes that cannot be contained in the average one-off cinema experience. Yet with that comes a crucial hope for the goodwill of the audience, that they're willing to come back, buy another ticket and sit back down to see the conclusion of the story.

Sci-fi fantasy comedy “Alienoid 2” opened on top of the South Korean box office with $3.57 million on a weekend that otherwise saw five animation titles and a political documentary in the top ten.
The big-budget, time-traveling “Alienoid 2” earned $3.57 million between Friday and Sunday with a market share of 39% and $4.77 million over its opening five days, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council. Imax reports that some $370,000 of the film’s total was earned from 24 Imax screens.
The film was made as a two-parter. The first instalment of “Alienoid” was one of the biggest flops of 2022. It opened with a $5.19 million weekend in July that year. But it suffered terrible reviews and word of mouth and finished with just $12.2 million. Director Choi Dong-hoon has recently spent several weeks pushing the message that the second part is better than the first.

Choi Dong-hoon unleashed his vision for the future last year with “Alienoid”, a sci-fi time-jumping epic that was his dream project, told in both the present time and the Joseon era. Though the multi-starrer large-scale production, starring Kim Tae-ri, Ryu Jun-yeol and Kim Woo-bin, failed to light up the box-office, Choi did manage to set up his expansive world with the first part of a tale that he shot simultaneously as a two-parter and the second part, now titled “Alienoid: The Return to the Future” is gearing up for release.
Synopsis
Ean and Thunder have become trapped in the distant past while trying to prevent the escape of alien prisoners who are locked up in the human brains. She eventually locates the Divine Blade. which can open a door through time. Meanwhile Moo-reuk who helps Ean escape is unnerved when he begins sensing the presence of a strange being in his body.

Gambling films make for an exciting viewing experience, complete with high rollers, risky bets, crowded poker tables, and fast-paced storylines. Like online resources such as this one www.gambleonlineaustralia.com/, they are an excellent place to learn gambling strategies and see different casino plays in action. But gambling films are not limited to Hollywood. In fact, there seems to be a movie with some aspect of casino life in just about every country. Below, we review the top gambling films from the Asian continent.
God of Gamblers (1989)
God of Gamblers features some humor, which surprisingly works well with the gambling theme. The 1989 classic follows pro-gambler Ko Chun, who is so good at gambling he is considered the “god of gamblers.” Chun, like any man, has eccentricities, his being that he enjoys a piece of chocolate in every game he plays. He beats another master gambler, Tanaka, beginning a series of humorous and engaging events.

Still only 50, Choi Dong-hoon has been a front-runner among Korean directors for at least the past 15 years, with hits under his belt including “The Thieves,” “Assassination” and “Tazza: The High Rollers.” Now he is driving the Korean industry’s exploration of sci-fi.
Choi’s “Alienoid” recently played to U.S. audiences at the New York Asian Film Festival and will open in North American theaters from Aug. 26.
The film is a genre-bending caper in which two gurus from the Koryo Dynasty search for a time-bending blade and unexpectedly cross paths with modern-day folk hunting down a dangerous alien hidden inside a human body.
The result has plenty in common with “Jeon Woochi,” a period actioner that is another of Choi’s hits, but amped with richer visuals and cleverer VFX. The scale of its ambition fits the billing as the first part of a two-film franchise.

Update, writethru: Hollywood movies had another solid holdover session at the international box office this weekend, with slight drops essentially across the board — and some new or near milestones as audiences continue to flock to cinemas for varied fare (it helps that the mercury mercifully let up in certain areas). There were no new wide offshore releases this frame — Universal’s Nope starts overseas rollout in August.
Leading the pack at offshore turnstiles this weekend is Universal/Illumination’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru which added 42.1M from 79 markets for a 25 drop and a 342.4M offshore cume. The global total through Sunday is an estimated 640.3M. Notably, Korea went bananas with the biggest Illumination opening day ever and the best animated weekend debut of the pandemic. For its part, the UK jumped 13 — a recurring theme as we’ll see below.

The title Woochi: The Demon Slayer denotes a far more serious tone than Dong-Hoon Choi's fantastical action comedy actually employs, and in the end that dissonance works in its favor. Had Choi's film taken itself too seriously, it would have invited a higher level of criticism upon itself to gauge the soundness of its narrative, the quality of its special effects, and the innovation of its fight choreography -- none of which are particularly notable on their own. What sets Woochi apart and makes it memorable is the unexpected silliness that wears down your resistance until you can't help but chuckle at some of the creative and ridiculous things it mixes into a epoch-spanning tale of mystics, Tao masters, demons, and magic that it grounds halfway through by bringing it into the 21st century. It might not be an excellent film, but it's a lot of fun once you...

The Thieves
Directed by Dong-Hoon Choi
South Korea, 2012
Philadelphia Film Festival
The second-highest grossing film in South Korean film history, Dong-Hoon Choi’s The Thieves is a fast-paced heist film in the recent American ensemble tradition of Ocean’s 11.
A group of Korean thieves led by Popeye (Jung-Jae Lee) are brought alongside a group of Chinese thieves with Chen (Simon Yam) at their helm to steal the famous “Tear of the Sun” diamond. Macau Park (Yun-seok Kim) is the mastermind behind it all, but he, Popeye, and Pepsi (Hye-su Kim), recently released from prison, have a history that will be sorted out.
The Thieves has a huge cast and nearly each individual crook receives his or her own share of screentime. Yenicall (Gianna Jun), Chewingum (Hae-suk Kim), and Zampano (Soo Hyun Kim) round out Popeye’s gang, playing the beautiful acrobat, the seasoned impersonator, and the handy technician respectively. On...

Director Dong-hoon Choi’s (Woochi, The Big Swindle,’ ‘Tazza: High Rollers’) Korean box office annihilating crime caper The Thieves remains the highest-grossing movie in Korea to date, and its heading to a theatre near-ish (as of course this is only a limited release) to you, next week. Synopsis: It's the score of their lives - if they can pull it off. Five thieves at the top of their game, and the crew is assembling for their biggest job yet. Popie's the muscle and brains, Pepsee's the safecracker. Yenicall climbs walls, Zampano is the strategy man, and Chewingum is the master of disguise. But this new score - it's hot - Maybe too hot. But who can resist the Tear of The Sun: a 318-carat diamond, worth 20 million dollars, and locked away in a casino. The vault is impenetrable, the location covered in cops, and everyone knows there's no honour...

Dong-hoon Choi’s “The Thieves” successfully revisits the heist genre that first brought him to fame. This time around, the production uses an ensemble cast of established, young and veteran actors from Korea and Hong Kong who all bring their “A” game and then some. Using the heist as a backdrop, the film weaves in a couple of love stories, a double cross, a triple cross or two and some good old fashion revenge to keep things interesting. “The Thieves” is about two rival teams of con men/women who come together when Macao Park, the mastermind, dangles an irresistible $20 million pay day. Though the comparisons can seem obvious, this is not “Ocean’s Eleven” or “The Italian Job.” The men and women in this film do not come together to help an old friend or right a wrong. They are here to get rich and if. This is more...

Every thief for himself. Today's trailer comes from South Korea, a heist film called The Thieves, basically South Korea's version of Ocean's Eleven, with some fun little modern character twists. This one is set mostly in Macau, another casino city, and involves one big diamond and a gang of 10 thieves, played by the likes of Yun-seok Kim, Hye-soo Kim, Hye-su Kim, Gianna Jun, Jung-jae Lee, Simon Yam, Hae-sook Kim, Dal-soo Oh, Kwok Cheung Tsang and Soo Hyun Kim. This looks kind of fun, and interesting, but not necessarily to the levels of Ocean's Eleven. Nonetheless, it's still worth watching today - take a look! Watch the official Us trailer for Dong-Hoon Choi's The Thieves, in high def from Apple: It's the score of their lives--if they can pull it off. Five thieves at the top of their game, and the crew is assembling for their biggest job yet. Popie's...
