Leslie Anne Adams, the new chair of the agency, told an Ontario Legislature committee on Wednesday that the video game industry has grown larger than the province's film and video rental markets and deserved a review system of its own.
''It is something that would be very worthwhile to have a discussion on, and possibly looked at by the policy committee of the board, '' Adams said.
At the same time, Daniel Lyon, Toronto-based director of business affairs at Astral Entertainment Group, Canada's largest distributor of prerecorded videocassettes, said Thursday that the Ontario government appeared to be seeking regulation of videocassette games rather than allowing overtures towards industry self-regulation to proceed.
''The trend nowadays is for government not step in and regulate unless there is an absolute need. If you have an industry willing to label its own products, there is no role for government required, '' Lyon said.
As in the United States, Ontario video producers approached the government and proposed the establishment of an industry association that would rate video games voluntarily.
Lyon, also acting chairman of the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Assn., said the Ontario Film Review Board's new chair may have been issuing a warning in the comments made Wednesday, suggesting that the industry speed up efforts to put its house in order, otherwise inviting the government to step in.
