Earlier this year, researchers for the Hollywood Diversity Report found that women and people of color drove box office numbers and were more in tune with what makes a movie a global success. Their impact extends beyond the theaters: Women and people of color also led the charge for higher ratings at home, according to the second part of the latest film report, which focuses on the top streaming releases of 2023.
Key Takeaways include:
Women made up the majority of viewers for nine of the top 10 streaming films of 2023, while households of color were also overrepresented as viewers for nine of the top 10.

“Go ahead,” the fates told Grey’s Anatomy’s Owen and Teddy in Thursday’s episode. “Take a day off work. But don’t expect work to take a day off you. Muahaha.” Yup, the marrieds’ attempt to reconnect with one another and nature at the same time led straight to a young woman who had fallen into a rocky hole. If it makes them feel any better, things weren’t going much more smoothly back at Grey Sloan. (Are they ever?) Read on, and we’ll go over everything that happened in “Blood, Sweat and Tears.”

1993's "Tombstone" features one of the most outstanding collections of facial hair of any movie in history, and star Kurt Russell's incredible crumb catcher is one of the best of the bunch. ("Tombstone" fun fact: There was only one fake mustache in that entire production.) Decades later, in an interview with Esquire, Russell basically said that cinematic trip to mustache nirvana didn't happen by accident. Part of his process as an actor is to seriously consider every aspect of every one of his characters -- especially when it comes to the hair and makeup and costuming.
"I try to draw it from the script and then go into my imagination and do what I think will work," he explained. That approach extended to his ultra-memorable Snake Plissken character in "Escape From New York," because according to the actor, it was his idea for Snake to have an eye patch.

It was an easy, breezy installment, but some noteworthy moments.
We have Yasuda leading the pack as best intern on Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 6, while Simone and Blue continued to bond.
And Beltran had to juggle Levi and Amelink.
Join the discussion with Haley Whitmire White, Lucy Peel, and Jasmine Blu!
What were your overall thoughts on this episode?
Haley: It was fine for a filler episode. Nothing terribly exciting happened, but it set up several potential big storylines. A couple of moments made me think we're in for some pretty big reveals towards the end of the season.
Lucy: I liked seeing different pairings here. Link and Beltran, Webber and Adams, Kwan and Griffith. Otherwise, I was underwhelmed. I am sure we're in for a big season finale, possibly disaster-centric.
Jasmine: I think this has been an interesting season because it feels like a "filler season." They haven't...

Do you know who has the Magyk?
Simone and Blue. Seriously, it's taken quite some time to lean into it overtly. But Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 6 delivered on the intern friendships blossoming, giving us that nostalgic feel of Og Magic with a fresh perspective.
In general, the installment had those shades of how the series used to be, especially with its balance on medical cases and doctors actually practicing and personal interactions.
One theme that has consistently carried over is the focus on mental health and the attempts to prevent doctors from burning out.
It's not just lip service, as it's a genuine issue that came to the forefront, forcing everyone to pay attention where they previously ignored it during the Covid pandemic.
The tables have turned a bit, with many people not pursuing the field fervently or dropping out of it. It has also prompted people to reevaluate how...

The worst characters in gaming are typically the ones these protagonists are up against. However, amid the shortage of single-player campaigns, thanks to the live service epidemic, protagonists are becoming rare in video games.
But that’s not always the case. Sometimes, protagonists can be just as annoying. The sad part is players cannot get rid of them if they like the video game they are playing. Such a dilemma.
Why Do Antagonists Have All the Hate When These ‘Pros’ Are There? Here Are the Most Hated Protagonists of Gaming
Some characters will stick with the players like glue, and while the players may want to bury them in the ground, it’s not really possible. Let’s say they are just hanging by the mercy of the video game, as players won’t be allowed to proceed further without them. We picked five of such characters whom gamers might find very lovable.

Twenty years ago this month, the fairy tale-like romantic comedy “13 Going on 30” starring Jennifer Garner made its way into cinemas. The actress played Jenna Rink, a socially awkward soon-to-be 13-year-old who quickly realizes that she “hates being 13.” She makes a birthday wish to be “thirty, flirty and thriving.” With the little help of some wishing dust, she wakes up the next morning to discover that her wish has come true.
It was a defining moment in Garner’s early career. Her role as Sydney Bristow in the television action thriller series “Alias” had made her a breakout star (including at awards shows) just a few years earlier. She won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress in 2002 and had competed again in 2003 and earlier in 2004. She had also been nominated for two Emmy Awards one Screen Actors Guild trophy.

By now, we're all familiar with how the rules of engagement for spies work -- on the big screen, at least. But what if all our assumptions about fictional espionage don't fully line up with the murkiness of reality? We all cheered when a rookie James Bond killed a couple of bad guys and received his license to kill, no holds barred. Or when Ethan Hunt goes rogue and is disavowed by his government again and again, only to save the day and be welcomed back with arms open wide. Even in examples based on real-world history, like the upcoming "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare," filmmakers tend to up the ante considerably and make certain leaps of logic in the pursuit of weaving an entertaining yarn.
But, then again, perhaps fact and fiction aren't always on opposing sides of this battlefield, after all. Nobody's claiming that surfing a tsunami is...

The 21st century is when everything changes.
British science fiction has been a lot of things. It was both cheesier and campier than its American counterpart, and yet also darker, grittier, and less afraid to tackle grown-up themes and bleaker outcomes. It had been a joke, and critically acclaimed, and it had all but died off except for some under-the-radar contenders.
And then something major happened: Doctor Who came back. It was always going to happen eventually – just look how many times The Tomorrow People has been remade. But Doctor Who didn’t just come back, it came back and became the biggest show in the country, on purpose.
Suddenly, the people in charge thought that maybe TV shows about ideas, and technology, and realities ahead of and besides our own could draw an audience, only this time they were taking it seriously and spending actual money on it. And...

MSNBC’s Nicole Wallace quite literally threw out her prepared script on Friday on-air while covering breaking news about a new public attack from former president Donald Trump. The visibly angry anchor told a panel of guests that “it’s time to do something different” when speaking about Trump’s outrageous and sometimes dangerous actions on and offline.
Wallace picked up her news script and tossed it to her right as she explained, “I have come on the air with breaking news about requests for gag orders because of threats for judges and their kids more times than I can count today before I got ready.”
After she apologized to the person who “has to write the banner at the bottom of my show,” Wallace added, “Donald Trump broke the rule of law. We should cover a broken judiciary in this country. Donald Trump managed to delay every federal, criminal...

Here’s the logline: “Bear believes there’s an action hero inside us all – even the celebs – but how strong is their will to survive? As Bear puts them through their paces, those who fail to impress will face the dreaded ‘Bear Hunt’ – a brutal game of cat and mouse where they’ll be hunted down by Bear himself and, if captured, eliminated from the show.”
The series will premiere next year and will be co-produced by Grylls’ The Natural Studios; Workerbee, the Banijay-backed outfit behind Discovery’s Idris Elba: Fighter; and Fremantle’s Talkback,...

Indie Movie “Game-Changer”
£1B worth of sweeteners: It was a potentially “game-changing” week for a floundering British indie film sector with the unveiling of a 40% tax relief on movies with budgets less than £15M ($19M) — a relief that trade body Pact says it has been calling for in some form or another since 2017 and which answers the prayers of Culture, Media & Sport Committee boss Caroline Dinenage. Jeremy Hunt’s budget was perhaps the most listened-to and most celebrated for a decade by the creative industries after the UK Chancellor unveiled the relief with fanfare alongside 40% business rates relief for big studios and improved VFX relief. All in all, Hunt and the UK treasury said that the...

The latest UCLA Hollywood Diversity report found that diversity is key to ticket sales, noting that Bipoc audiences and women drove the biggest box office winners in 2023.
According to the study, films like “Barbie” and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” — which featured casts comprising 31-40% people of color — had the highest median global box office earnings ($119.8 million) among the top 200 films of the year, indicating that diversity drives demand for movies.
Researchers noted that audiences of color dominated opening weekend sales for 14 of the top 20 films, particularly when those casts included or were led by people of color. “Creed III,” “Scream VI” and “John Wick: Chapter 4,” which featured notably diverse casts, were the highest earners in their franchises; Bipoc audiences made up at least 60% of each film’s opening weekend domestic audience. Meanwhile, women led ticket sales for three of the top 10 films, accounting for...

Some of the biggest names in the world of British film have showered praise on the “game-changing” new 40% British indie film relief.
Announced earlier today by UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt following lobbying from the BFI and Pact for months, the relief will apply to movies made for less than £15M ($19M). Today’s move was coupled with a 5% increase in tax relief for UK VFX costs in film and high-end TV, and business rates relief of 40% for major studios.
Sixteen Films producer and Ken Loach collaborator Rebecca O’Brien joked that the “genuine game changer” has prompted her to rethink whether to stop making movies.
“It’s extraordinary,” she told Deadline shortly after the credit was announced. “It just gives me confidence and means if I can raise the money more easily, I can spend more time helping the production and making a good film rather than spending all my time...

During the reading of the U.K. government’s spring budget on Wednesday, Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt revealed a 40% corporate tax relief for film and TV studios through 2034.
The plan also includes a new tax credit for independent films shot in the U.K. that have a budget less than $19 million (£15 million), and a 5% increase in credit for visual effects in film and high-end TV along with the removal of the 80% cap.
“We have become Europe’s largest film and TV production center, with Idris Elba, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom all filming their latest productions here,” Hunt said. “Studio space in the U.K. has doubled in the last three years, and at the current rate of expansion, next year we will be second only to Hollywood globally.”
Hunt continued to say that the government had listened “carefully to representations from companies like Pinewood, Warner Bros. and Sky Studios” when making the decision.

The UK government is to introduce an indie movie tax credit for films that have budgets up to £15M ($19M), along with bringing in business rates relief for big studios and additional VFX relief.
From April 1, the new indie relief will be separate to the pre-existing film and high-end TV tax credit but both will fall under the new Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit system. The local industry has been calling for the move for months. Films will qualify if they pass a “new British film Institute test.” Productions can make claims from April 1 2025 in respect of expenditure incurred from April 1 2024.
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt also announced in the past few moments that there will be a 5% increase in tax relief for UK VFX costs in film and high-end TV, while the cost cap of 80% will be removed. The government will also consult on the types of expenditure that will be in scope...

The U.K. government of Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak unveiled a 40 percent corporate tax relief for film and TV studio facilities until 2034 on Wednesday, introduced a new independent film incentive of 40 percent and announced an increase to an existing incentive for visual effects. The moves earned praise from entertainment industry leaders who also said that the new Jurassic World movie would start shooting in the country later this year.
Sunak’s chancellor, or finance minister, Jeremy Hunt made the announcements during his spring budget speech.

When comedian and actor Rob Delaney landed a role in Mission: Impossible 7, he was understandably thrilled to work with legendary star Tom Cruise. But what blew Delaney away most was the sheer depth of Cruise’s filmmaking knowledge on set.
There is no doubt that Cruise has an extensive knowledge of every bit of work he does. Delaney plays an agent working to apprehend Ethan Hunt. As part of a special operations group, Joint Special Operations Command (Jsoc). His character is determined to stop Hunt’s team though their motives may differ.
What did Rob Delaney reveal about Tom Cruise?
Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick
While Tom Cruise is widely popular for the authentic stunts he does in the Mission Impossible franchise, there is a lot more to him on set.
Did a week on MI7 & it was *prettay* crazy how much he knew everything about every aspect of filmmaking.

Overtake! is a sports anime about F4 racing. Money and sponsorships determine the outcome as much as skill. The protagonist Haruka Asahina is a young driver allied with the independent “privateer” team Komaki Motors. All it takes is a bad tire for Haruka to lose a race. His rivals, Satsuki Harunaga and Toshiki Tokumaru, belong to the larger and wealthier team Belsorriso. They win even on their worst days. The stage is set for an underdog story, where a young boy comes from nowhere to beat the establishment at their own game. Related: Overtake! Is a Great Way to Get Into Formula Racing Certainly the climax of the series sees Haruka and Komaki Motors challenge Belsorriso’s dominance of the track. But Overtake! has a lot more on its mind than just Haruka’s story of perseverance. The series spends just as much time with Satsuki and Toshiki of Belsorriso.

UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has been told to use his forthcoming Spring budget to make an “urgent intervention” to support the UK indie film sector in a letter published by Caroline Dinenage MP, chair of the influential Culture, Media and Sport Committee.
The letter follows the second evidence session of the Committee’s inquiry into British film and high-end TV, which featured Sixteen Films producer Rebecca O’Brien alongside Film4 and BBC Film heads Ollie Madden and Eva Yates. The letter outlines the committee’s concerns that the British film industry is increasingly reliant on investment from overseas productions, resulting in what it describes as a “vulnerable domestic sector,” and asks the Chancellor to introduce enhanced tax relief for independent British films in the Spring budget.
“To address this issue, we urge the Government to introduce enhanced tax relief for British films within a budget range of approximately £1 million to £15 million,...

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. Today we’re talking to Stephen Kelliher, co-founder and MD of established London-based sales and film finance outfit Bankside Films. The company played a key role in getting Australian horror hit Talk to Me off the ground and Kelliher walks us through how that project came together as well as Bankside’s hefty EFM slate this year.
Stephen Kelliher is in a good mood. The Bankside Films co-founder and managing director is coming off of the back of a banner 12 months with his London-based sales and film finance outfit, a company that not only repped worldwide sales on Irish-language Oscar nominee The Quiet Girl but also played an integral role in getting Aussie breakout supernatural horror hit Talk to Me off the ground.

The disaster film Twister (watch it Here) was a massive success for Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, and Amblin Entertainment when it was released during the summer movie season in 1996. Made on a budget of $90 million, it earned almost $500 million at the global box office and ranked as the tenth highest-grossing film of all time. Quickly cashing in with a sequel would have made a lot of sense. But while there were rumors – including a memorable one that said the sequel would involve a tornado hitting a major city – a follow-up never made it into production. Until now. Universal and Amblin are reviving the Twister IP with a film called Twisters, which is set to receive a theatrical release on July 19, 2024. Twenty-eight years later, will it be able to replicate or surpass the success of its predecessor? We’ll have to wait and see. But for know, we’re going to...

Those words, delivered with a mixture of terror and excitement, tell viewers all they need to know about the chaos and carnage that a group of storm chasers is about to encounter in “Twisters,” a follow-up to the 1996 box office hit “Twister.” The disaster film aired its first trailer during the Super Bowl. Starring Glen Powell, who plays a self-described “tornado wrangler,” and Daisy Edgar-Jones as a scientist, the film is set for a July 19 release.

All anybody wants to talk about these days is flooding, winter vortexes, and other natural disasters stemming from the ongoing climate crisis. Well, apparently, the tornado from "Twister" got wind of this (I'm sorry) and is back with a vengeance in the newly unveiled Super Bowl trailer for "Twisters."
Neither a direct follow-up to director Jan de Bont's 1996 natural disaster thriller nor a complete reboot of the franchise, "Twisters" follows a new team of storm chasers as they battle destructive cyclones in the present day. Apparently, at one point, "Twister" star Helen Hunt and "Blindspotting" co-writers/co-stars Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal pitched a proper legacy sequel that, according to Hunt, would've focused on "all Black and Brown storm chasers." However, the studio powers that be didn't go for it for "potentially shady" reasons, as Diggs told Business Insider last year.

Super Bowl Lviii on Sunday night out of Las Vegas brought more than just excitement for 49ers and Chiefs fans: Universal Pictures debuted the first footage from Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters” during the big game. Check it out below.
The Golden Globe-winning director’s first film since “Minari” serves as a follow-up to Jan de Bont’s 1996 original blockbuster about storm chasers in Oklahoma, led by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. “Twisters” is written by Mark L. Smith, the scribe behind “The Revenant” (with Alejandro G. Iñárritu) and director George Clooney’s Netflix sci-fi “The Midnight Sky.” Chung’s film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos, with Universal releasing the picture on July 19, 2024 in the United States.
Plans for a “Twisters” follow-up have been in the works for half a decade, with Helen Hunt pitching a sequel about a diverse set of storm chasers that she said the studio rejected.

Spoilers Ahead
The escape itself may not be groundbreaking in its execution. Still, from the very beginning, Bosco’s character embodies the relentless pursuit of liberation, not just from physical...
