When I decided to review Not Another Happy Ending the reason for this was pretty obvious, as a Doctor Who fan I was interested in a movie where Karen Gillan took a lead role. As Amy she was arguably one of the most popular companions to The Doctor and with her moving onto Guardians of the Galaxy it looks like she has a huge future in the movie business. What I was interested in was how she could handle a role that required more acting than action, though to be fair she had her moments in Doctor Who with her Raggedy Man (fans will know who I mean).

★★☆☆☆ John McKay's Not Another Happy Ending (2013) is a breezy and harmless if ultimately forgettable romantic comedy set in and around the city of Glasgow. Jane (former Doctor Who star Karen Gillan), a struggling novelist, finds herself thrust into the limelight when her first novel, a memoir about the trails of her own family, becomes an overnight success. With her newfound status, her life sees improvement. Not only does she fall in love with screenwriter Willie (Henry Ian Cusick), but she also starts to reconnect with her estranged father. All this, however, has a negative effect on her ability to complete her sophomore novel.
Thus, Jane's loyal publisher Tom (Stanley Weber) and his assistant Roddy (Iain De Caestecker, in the film's funniest role) sets about to diminish this fresh wave of romantic positivity. Boasting a moderately good premise that both embraces and satirises the well-worn clichés of the rom-com genre,...

How far can a film go based solely on the performance of its star? Turns out a fair distance if Scottish rom-com Not Another Happy Ending is anything to go by. Doctor Who star Karen Gillan, in her first leading movie role, carries this film by the scruff of the neck with a quirky and well-measured performance as an up-and-coming novelist who's struggling to get the creative juices flowing on her second book.
Gillan plays Jane Lockhart, a woman who mined her turbulent upbringing (notably paternal abandonment) into a debut novel that shot her onto the literary A-list. Fame, awards and romance with Hollywood screenwriter Willie (Lost's Henry Ian Cusick) swiftly followed, but Jane's happiness proves to be her downfall. When she's content she can't write,...

Having arrived from Glasgow the night before, and fresh from an early morning cast and crew screening of his latest movie, John McKay was set for a day of interviews when we met him in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket.
The film in question, Not Another Happy Ending, was due to close the 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival the following night with a star-studded closing gala at the city’s Festival Theatre.
Shot primarily in Glasgow, McKay’s film tells the story of a writer struggling to complete her second novel. Literally haunted by her impatient heroine, Jane Lockhart (Karen Gillan) is desperate to escape the two-book contract with her publisher, as she is still smarting from his decision to change the title of her debut behind her back.
Conceived almost five years ago by David Solomons, the original script was passed on to John McKay by the agent they shared. Alongside...

Not Another Happy Ending
Written by David Solomons
Directed by John McKay
UK, 2013
Set in a spruced-up Glasgow, Not Another Happy Ending is an offbeat romantic comedy starring Karen Gillan as Jane, a quirky young novelist struggling to overcome a nasty bout of writer’s block. With the editorial guidance of her passionate but single-minded publisher, Tom (Stanley Weber), her debut autobiographical novel became a huge bestseller, as well as reuniting her with her estranged father (Gary Lewis) and landing her a relationship with a renowned but narcissistic screenwriter, Willie (Henry Ian Cusick). Relying on Jane’s new book to rescue his ailing publishing company, Tom believes that her newfound happiness is preventing her from writing and sets out to make her life as miserable as he can.
The underhand methods he resorts to provide the impetus for the plot, chipping away at Jane’s vulnerabilities and gradually eroding her chirpy disposition.

Review Andrew Blair 26 Jun 2013 - 06:37
Karen Gillan in a rom-com! Do you need to know any more? Here's Andrew's review of Not Another Happy Ending...
To cut a long story short: Amy Pond meets Haunted Jack Whitehall while Paul from The Fades does quips. Oh, and Haunted Jack Whitehall is French.
Karen Gillan's first role to be released post-Pond is a pleasant, occasionally laugh-out-loud Scottish rom-com. It doesn't take itself too seriously, pokes fun at genre clichés while also revelling in them, and employs popcorn logic cheerfully. It isn't the most funny or romantic film ever made, and occasionally its screwball sensibilities are beyond the reach of its cast's comic timing, but neither is it a charmless shrew-fest like so many of its kind.
Gillan plays Jane Lockhart, aspiring author, who finds her manuscript accepted by garrulous Frenchman Tom Duval (Stanley Weber, looking like he makes love exclusively...

Best known for her role as Amy Pond in Doctor Who, Karen Gillan makes her feature leading debut this year with the anticipated Not Another Happy Ending, which makes its world premiere at the end of the month at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
With the film about to debut for the world, we’ve got the first trailer to share. And it promises that Richard Curtis’ About Time won’t be the only stellar new British romantic-comedy to fall in love with this year.
Karen Gillan stars as Jane, a young Glasgow writer whose first novel is a success, thanks in part to the editing of her sympathetic but business-minded publisher, Tom (Stanley Weber). Reconciled with her estranged father (Gary Lewis) and embarked on a new relationship with a handsome and self-absorbed writer (Henry Ian Cusick), Jane comes down with a severe case of writer’s block while struggling with her second novel.

Doctor Who star Karen Gillan is to make her feature film debut as a leading lady in Glasgow-set indie comedy film Not Another Happy Ending which is due to start shooting next month. She plays successful writer Jane Lockhart who writes best when she's unhappy.
Karen recently wrapped a three-year stint as The Doctor’s companion – and promised that her character’s exit will be “unexpected”, as well as emotional.
French actor Stanley Weber will play Thomas Duval – the publisher to Karen’s novelist character Jane Lockhart, a passionate writer who suffers a bout of writers block on her second novel.
Here's the film's synopsis:
When a struggling publisher discovers his only successful author is blocked he knows he has to unblock her or he's finished. With her newfound success, she’s become too damn happy and he thinks she can't write when she's happy. The only trouble is, the worse he makes her feel,...

God forbid the lovely Karen Gillan should join the ranks of Resting Thesps too long when Jenna Louise-Coleman takes her place as the new assistant in Doctor Who. Therefore consider contributing to the next film Gillan's committed to, funded by the IndieGoGo initiative. Having recently become aware of IndieGoGo through this site's former connection with the Minister Of Chance project, the idea of crowd-funding really taking off is the realisation of a dream I have had, along with many others, I'm sure, for a long time.
This particular project, a film with a crowd-funding target of a pretty measly $50,000 (£31,500 approx) is entitled Not Another Happy Ending, and also features fellow Scot actor Emun Elliot from Ridley Scott's forthcoming Alien prequel Prometheus.

Director: Yann Samuell.
Writers: Eva Ibbotson (novel), and David Solomons (screenplay).
Cast: Kevin McKidd, Steven Mackintosh, Emma Fielding, Anthony Head, and Bill Ward.
DVD Release Date: October 4, 2011.
Humphrey was once an ordinary boy with an ordinary life. Well, that is, until he died—quite by accident, really. But don't tell his best friend, Barnabas, that. His death quite literally sets in motion The Great Ghost Rescue, a tongue-in-cheek horror comedy from the UK about dislocated spirits looking for a new home.
This movie made a quiet release on this side of the pond with very little fanfare as a Halloween season DVD release. Also, this film is by no means a faithful adaptation of Eva Ibbotson’s original novel of the same name, published 1975; that is a shame. This film is easy to share with young ones before going out for trick or treat.
While children may not get all of the jokes,...

You may know actress Karen Gillan as her Doctor Who character, Amy Pond, but fans will soon know her as the star of Not Another Happy Ending. The fair-skinned actress just negotiated to continue on the cast of Doctor Who for a seventh season. If that excites you, you’ll really cheer after viewing season six’s trailer with Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor.
As for Not Another Happy Ending, Gillian there stars as a cooky writer, famous for a “miserable”, but best selling fiction novel who falls in writer’s block because since her success, she is too happy to continue writing sad content. In romantic comedy fashion, her publisher played by Black Death actor Emun Elliott (a 2009 Screen Star of Tomorrow), tries to break of her writer’s block by actively trying to make her more miserable, only to come to the realization that he is in love with her.

You've got your scary ghosts and your friendly ghosts, but it's fairly rare in cinema that we see evicted ghosts. Now, however, with The Great Ghost Rescue shooting in London and Hungary and the first pictures hitting the net, we're finally going to see what happens when ghosts become dispossessed (sorry).Based on the bestselling kids book by Eva Ibbotson, this is the story of a young ghost (or at least the ghost of a young boy) called Humphrey (Toby Hall). When he and his family lose their usual haunt, they set off with other ghosts of London to find a new home - but when they reveal their existence to the world, they find themselves threatened with exorcism. Egad!Kevin McKidd, Emma Fielding, Georgia Groome and Steven Mackintosh are also starring in what looks like a fun caper. C'mon, anytime there's a big Scotsman with a huge axe in a film,...
