Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Resistance Trailer It's one of those 'What If?' scenarios that, I imagine, lingers with those who have even but a general understanding of World War II.

Make no mistake, Freak Dance is a straight-up musical.a brilliant, musical comedy with dance numbers that rival the very films they are parodying. Adapted by Upright Citizens Brigade co-founder, Matt Besser, from the stage show that ran for more than a year at the Ucb Theatre, the comedy skips cheap reference humor and goes right for absurdity.
Freak Dance tells the story of Cocolonia, a spoiled rich girl who just wants to dance, so she sets out to join the ranks of some local street dancers. Little does she know that this will ultimately involve her in an epic battle of good and evil between two warring dance troupes. Update: As co-writer/director Matt Besser has explained in the comments below, the trailer went public prematurely and it's been taken down until a release date has been secured. We'll update when it's live again. For all those who have grown weary from the constant surge of spoofs that rely more on topicality than actual jokes, this could be the antidote. If the film bears any similarity to the Wayans brothers' latest spoof Dance Flick, pay no mind. The Ucb -- a frequently hilarious [1] improv and sketch comedy group whose TV show ran for three seasons on Comedy Central in the late '90s -- first developed Freak Dance as a live...
