- One of the world's leading authorities on the life and works of William Shakespeare he is the Professor of Shakespeare Studies at the University of Birmingham, England as well as Chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and Vice-Chairman of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. He is also the author of many books on the subject and is General Editor of the Oxford Shakespeare series and the Oxford Complete Works of Shakespeare.
- Professor Wells was awarded the C.B.E. (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2007 Queen's Birthday Honors List for his services to Literature.
