Utopia and Showtime have partnered to acquire “Meet Me in the Bathroom,” the documentary film about the early 2000s New York City rock and roll scene that made its premiere at this year’s Sundance.
Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern directed the film that’s based on the 2017 book by Lizzy Goodman. Goodman’s book is a comprehensive oral history of the bands that redefined the rock scene in the early 2000s and late ’90s, including The Strokes, Interpol, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem and more. The film specifically is an assemble of archival footage from that era and forgoes talking head interviews, instead featuring rare early performances and behind the scenes looks at NYC’s top bands.
Utopia will release the film theatrically in theaters later this year, and Showtime will air “Meet Me in the Bathroom” by the end of 2022.

Scottish musical sensation Lewis Capaldi is the subject of a feature-length documentary directed by BAFTA winner Joe Pearlman (“Bros: After the Screaming Stops”) and produced by Pulse Films. The film will be shopped to buyers at the Cannes virtual market by Independent Entertainment.
The 24-year-old Capaldi has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame over the past 36 months, earning a Grammy nomination and Brit award for his debut single “Someone You Loved,” in addition to a second Brit for best new artist, and selling out an arena tour before he’d even released his debut album.
It’s a stark contrast to his life just three years ago, when he was still carrying his own gear while performing in Scottish bars and pubs. The film follows Capaldi over a five-year period, from a global headline tour to returning to his parents’ home in Scotland to start work on his sophomore album.

As the makers of Synth, Metal and Folk Britannia turn their cameras on the audience, the days of battling jazzers, hippy free-for-alls, or huge convoys of crusties may be over, but outdoor rock is booming
Last year, roughly one in 10 British adults attended a festival. The Performing Rights Society estimated that around 150 festivals generated some £450m for the British economy, with just 10 events accounting for half that total. Whether you fancied dressing up at Bestival, slam-dancing at Sonisphere or waving at a BBC camera at Glastonbury, there was something for everyone. The festival circuit is now a fully enshrined, middle-class version of the aristocratic Season, making this the perfect time for BBC4's Festivals Britannia film. "My suspicion is that it wouldn't have been made even 10 years ago," admits writer and director Sam Bridger. "And it's slightly different to the other films in the series [Pop, Synth, Folk and Metal Britannia] in that it's not about one genre of music.
