Imagine a world where you could not only find your perfect match, but you'd also be scientifically and genetically proven to fall in love with them (and vice versa), simply by sending off a DNA sample. Well, that's exactly the world that Netflix's new show The One is set in, and it's not all it's cracked up to be. The show follows the story of Rebecca (played by Hannah Ware), the CEO of a company called MatchDNA that helps people find their perfect match. The success of the company hinges entirely on one single DNA database that Rebecca and her business partner have access to, and the show goes on to explore the effects of "the match" on different relationships.
While it sounds like a good idea at first, and in principle suggests that everyone eventually ends up with their one perfect match, in reality, what it means is...

Set in the very near future where scientists have discovered a method of matching people with their perfect romantic fit using DNA, eight-part Netflix Original The One is technically a sci-fi drama. Really though, it’s a crime thriller revolving around the murky circumstances in which the cash cow company behind the matching service was created. Written by Misfits and Crazyhead creator Howard Overman, The One is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by John Marrs. It’s a cat-and-mouse game between wealthy, driven CEO Rebecca (Hannah Ware) and police detective Kate (Zoë Tapper).
While you’re solving the show’s mysteries, we’ve taken the liberty of solving that nagging background question of where you might have seen its cast on screen before…

Fascinating backroom politics circa WWII are undermined by banal marital melodrama in Danish director Christina Rosendahl’s “The Good Traitor,” resulting in a so-so period drama that raises more questions than it answers. The film centers on the life of diplomat-gone-rogue Henrik Kauffmann, who was posted to Washington, D.C., as Danish Ambassador in 1939. When the Nazis occupy Denmark on April 9, 1940, Kauffmann declares himself the only true representative of the free Danish people and goes on to make a number of high-risk autonomous decisions that, in the long run, help to free his homeland. Unfortunately, the details of Kauffmann’s wheeling and dealing are continually undercut by the film’s concentration on his rather unusual personal life, rendered here in trite narrative clichés.
During a long and distinguished foreign service career, Kauffmann enabled the U.S. to install strategic military bases on Greenland (an autonomous territory of Denmark) during WWII.

Netflix has debuted a new trailer for the relationship drama ‘The One’.
Based on a book by John Marrs, the eight-episode series is set ‘five minutes in the future’, in a world where a DNA test can find your perfect partner – the one person you’re genetically predisposed to fall passionately in love with. No matter how good your relationship, which one of us can honestly say we haven’t thought about whether there is someone better out there? What if a hair sample is all it takes to find them? The idea is simple, but the implications are explosive. We will never think of love and relationships in the same way again.
Created by Howard Overman (Misfits), the series stars Hannah Ware, Dimitri Leonidas, Amir El-Masry, Stephen Campbell Moore, Wilf Scolding, Diarmaid Murtagh, Lois Chimimba, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Pallavi Sharda, Zoë Tapper and Gregg Chillin.
Also in trailers – Liam Neeson...

I’ve got a trailer here for a fun looking new horror comedy called Zoo, which tells the story of a couple who are trying to save their marriage as a zombie apocalypse breaks out.
Here’s the synopsis:
Karen and John have lost the spark of married life the day they were notified that they were unable to conceive. Now they almost live like the walking dead, imprisoned by everyday life and on the verge of divorce. When the world is hit by a pandemic that really turns people into zombies, the couple have to lock themselves in their apartment, waiting for rescue. While the world outside is falling apart, they are forced to find their way back to each other and reclaim their lost love.
This actually looks like it could be an entertaining film worth checking out. I really like the concept and as you’ll see in the trailer,...

"It's like we're the only two people left in the world." Ping Pong Film has released their first trailer for an indie horror comedy titled Zoo, the latest film from young Swedish filmmaker Antonio Tublen (aka Antonio Steve Tublén of Lfo previously). The film is about a married couple struggling with their relationship who end up stuck together in their apartment when a zombie apocalypse breaks out. They can't go anywhere else, so they must figure out how to deal with each other in order to survive. Until others show up. It's a good concept, but the execution is awful. Zoo stars Zoë Tapper and Ed Speleers, with a small cast including Jan Bijvoet and Antonia Campbell-Hughes. The film just premiered at the Sitges Film Festival, where I saw it and did not like it one bit. I really wanted it to be better, but unfortunately it's a disaster in every way.

TV is no stranger to telling a story from different character angles. Showtime’s “The Affair” has made an entire three-season run out of looking back at key moments in a doomed, dangerous series of romantic encounters, reframing them through the eyes of participants and observers alike.
“Liar,” the latest series from Sundance TV looks to be covering that territory in a new way. From creators Harry and Jack Williams (“Fleabag”), “Liar” stars Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd as two people each trying to piece together their versions of what happened on a fateful date.

Luke Pasqualino's d'Artagnan was the star of The Musketeers' first episode but hasn't really taken focus since, so it's refreshing to see the plucky young hero return very much to the forefront for 'The Challenge' - the adventure serial's latest outing.
Romance might finally be blossoming with Tamla Kari's comely Constance, but elsewhere d'Artagnan's fortunes are less favourable. He's yet to become a true Musketeer and a new nemesis also lurks on the horizon, the fearsome brute Labarge - with guest star Vinnie Jones taking on the sort of period villain role he's not attempted since the music video for Westlife's 'Bop Bop Baby'.
Jones might be a one-trick pony, but it's a trick he's undeniably good at performing and it's enormous fun seeing his cockney hardman routine relocated to 17th Century Paris.

Paul Bettany stars in this week's British crime drama Blood as Joe, a veteran cop who's driven to violence after a murder suspect he believes to be guilty is released without charge.
Digital Spy sat down with Bettany and director Nick Murphy (The Awakening) to discuss the film's portrayal of family, and its striking setting on the Lancashire coast.
Bettany also discussed the casting of Stephen Graham, who he had been hoping to work with for several years, as Joe's more sensitive brother Chrissie.
Mark Strong, Brian Cox, Zoë Tapper and Ben Crompton are among the supporting cast of Blood, which was adapted by Bill Gallagher from his own 2004 BBC series Conviction.

Director: Nick Murphy; Screenwriter Bill Gallagher; Starring: Paul Bettany, Mark Strong, Stephen Graham, Brian Cox, Zoë Tapper; Running time: 92 mins; Certificate: 15
You don't need to have seen Bill Gallagher's 2004 BBC series Conviction to recognise the small-screen roots of Blood, which begins in a relatively standard Sunday evening telly vein. After a 12-year-old girl is murdered, hardened and emotionally distant copper Joe Fairburn (Paul Bettany) becomes obsessed with tracking down her killer, with the case reminding him of an unsolved one from his past.
The police arrest Jason (an unsettling Ben Crompton), a smug and unrepentant creep with a history of child abuse. Joe and his more sensitive brother Chrissie (Stephen Graham) are convinced of his guilt, but he's released due to lack of evidence. This does not sit well with the increasingly unpredictable Joe, and an impulsive act of vigilante justice sends both brothers spiralling into moral decline.
Despite the limitations of Gallagher's script,...

This does not sit well with the increasingly unpredictable Joe, and an impulsive act of vigilante justice sends both brothers spiralling into moral decline.
Despite the limitations of Gallagher's script,...

Period dramas offer delicious escapes, but no matter what era, period pieces need costumes that set the stage. "Mr. Selfridge," airing on "Masterpiece Classic" Sundays on PBS (check local listings), which unfolds in the first modern department store in 1909 England, places great emphasis on costumes.
"In Britain we don't have as much money to make programs as in America," James Keast, the series' costume designer, tells Zap2it. "One of our skills is to make it look expensive. With that in mind, we are mostly filming in a shop where the colors will be black because that was the uniform of the day, and I would like to use some color."
He created most of the costumes, but, "all of the trimmings, all of the bits of lace are original," Keast says. He regularly haunts garage sales, charity sales and eBay. "I have a huge selection of these pieces, and if I see it,...

"Mr. Selfridge" premiered on PBS Sunday (March 31), with star Jeremy Piven stepping into the titular role of the fast-talking American who opened one of the world's largest department stores in early 20th-century London.
Piven participated in a live chat Monday with the fans, where he talks about his new television role.
Q: "Did you have any reservations about being part of a period piece and now competing with the 'Downton Abbey' standard?"
Piven: "No reservations whatsoever. In fact, I couldn't have planned it any better."
Q: "What was the appeal of this role?"
Piven: "Harry lived such a full, beautiful and ultimately tragic life that it's really fertile ground for a series."
Q: "It feels like you were born to play this part...what did you think when you were approached to play Harry?"
Piven: "I felt honored that they would think of me for this role and...

PBS' "Masterpiece Classic" debuted a new drama Sunday (March 31), hoping to attract the viewers who are currently in "Downton Abbey" withdrawal with period piece "Mr. Selfridge," which has already aired in the U.K. to solid ratings, averaging 8.5 million viewers per episode.
The question is -- will it catch on here in the U.S.?
Star Jeremy Piven is best known for his work as Ari Gold on "Entourage," a fast-talking, neurotic Hollywood talent agent. We can't imagine that "Mr. Selfridge" is going to attract many "Entourage" viewers, so we're curious as to the PBS viewer reaction to Piven in the titular role, which is not unlike his "Entourage" character.
For us, while Piven is certainly a solid Selfridge, we found the supporting characters even more interesting. In particular, Aisling Loftus as Agnes Towler, a shop girl who takes care of her younger brother and has to put up with a mooching,...

The real life Harry Selfridge was a larger-than-life entrepreneur who turned the dreary museum-like retail establishments of London into something resembling modern stores. PBS Masterpiece’s new drama Mr Selfridge shows us precisely how this brash yank managed to win the hearts and minds of London’s stuffy elite.
The show begins with Selfridge’s plans for a new store unraveling as his business partner pulls the plug on the deal. Among other things, his English counterpart is unhappy with Selfridge’s decision to hire a brass band to perform at the building site as work begins on the construction. Even away from the work, Selfridge ruffles feathers in London with his all-too-casual manner and apparent disdain for etiquette. He persuades a shop assistant in another store to break protocol and let him browse through the store’s entire inventory of gloves. He...

Harry Selfridge made shopping fun. Sure, people always shopped, but it was more of a chore before Selfridge redefined the experience in 1909.
Though many Americans may not know his name, the lush eight-part series "Mr. Selfridge," launching on PBS' "Masterpiece Classic" Sunday, March 31 (check local listings), brings viewers into his world. It's well worth the visit.
Jeremy Piven ("Entourage") is perfectly cast as the brash American in the title role.
"I would describe him as a burst of bright light, hopefully endearing and a powerful energy that possibly takes up a lot of energy in the room and yet is in love with what he does and his family and makes everyone in the room feel special," Piven says.
It's an apt description for the man who seems to always have something to prove and whose charisma enchants people.

The latest PBS offering on "Masterpiece Classic" is "Mr. Selfridge," a period drama set in turn-of-the-century England. Sound familiar?
"Mr. Selfridge" tells the story of real-life department store mogul Harry Gordon Selfridge (Jeremy Piven), who revolutionized the world of shopping when he opened Selfridge & Co. in London in 1909. Will "Downton Abbey" fans get their period drama fix with this new program? Yes and no.
On the one hand, "Mr. Selfridge" has many of the trappings viewers love about "Downton" -- period costumes and sets, an upstairs/downstairs feel between the wealthy Selfridge, his friends and customers, and the working-class people who are employed at his store.
Related: "Downton Abbey" cast in regular clothes
However, whereas "Downton" has always focused on propriety and upholding the old ways in an ever-changing world, "Mr. Selfridge" is about looking forward, an entrepreneur working his way up the social ladder with his salesmanship and vision.

Mr Selfridge came to a close last weekend in suitably dramatic fashion, but fear not fans of the glamourous period drama, ITV has already given a green light to series two.
And if you can't wait that long for your next fix, the DVD of series one is out now. Digital Spy caught up with one of the show's stars, Zoë Tapper, to chat about its success and her TV heroes.
Why do you think people fell in love with Mr Selfridge?
"I think it's glamorous. I think it's escapist television. People are pulled into this world on a Sunday night that is a totally different world to the one we live in now. It fills in a big hole in the scheduling and I think that's why people have warmed to it.
"Mr Selfridge is a lot more accessible than shows like Downton. Everyone knows the store, but not everyone knows the story.

Zoe Tapper has revealed that she will not be returning for the second series of ITV period drama Mr Selfridge.
The actress confirmed the news last night (March 10) after the final episode of series one aired.

Tapper's character Ellen Love was a love interest throughout the first series for Jeremy Piven's Harry Selfridge. In last night's series finale, Ellen Love gained revenge on Selfridge spurning her romantic advances by taking part in a theatre production that mocked the American businessman.
ITV has already confirmed that Mr Selfridge will be back for another series in 2014, describing the show as "ITV drama at its best".

Mr Selfridge has been given a second series by ITV following its ratings success.
Featuring Entourage star Jeremy Piven, Zoe Tapper and Katherine Kelly, the show tells the story of Harry Gordon Selfridge, the founder of Selfridges department store.
The second series, which will once again be written by Andrew Davies and his team, will move the story forward to 1914 and the lead-up to World War 1.
Series one of Mr Selfridge is currently midway through its run and has been edging out BBC One's rival period drama Ripper Street in the ratings. However, it hasn't quite matched the figures of BBC One's Call The Midwife.
It is ITV's most-watched new drama since Scott and Bailey launched in 2011.
Steve November, ITV's acting director of drama commissioning, said: "It is ITV drama at its best and we are looking forward to spending more time with the wonderful characters."

Title: Cheerful Weather for the Wedding Director: Donald Rice Starring: Felicity Jones, Luke Treadaway, Elizabeth McGovern, Mackenzie Crook, Fenella Woolgar, Zoë Tapper, Julian Wadham, Sophie Stanton, Ellie Kendrick, Olly Alexander, James Norton A very mannered but deadly dull period piece drama of partially upended, stuffy social customs in which things like, “Dolly, dearest Dolly!” are earnestly exclaimed, “Cheerful Weather for the Wedding” is a ruinous vehicle for the incandescence of Felicity Jones. What could on the surface be something lively and spry, a la Oliver Wilde, is instead neither a spirited tale of romantic competition nor a hand-wringing story of fated love. It just lays there, at once familiar and [ Read More ]

Cloudy With a Chance of Strain: Rice’s Debut a Sweet Coated Flimsy
For his directorial debut, Donald Rice adapts a 1932 novella written by Julia Strachney, Cheerful Weather for the Wedding, a drolly executed period endeavor concerning the mercurial affections of one very wishy washy debutante in pre-wwii England. Featuring a curiously amassed cast that may inspire high expectations, Rice can’t quite fatten up the thin source material enough to warrant a feature length treatise on a love triangle that’s hardly worth our attention. In its defense, it never regresses to cheap laughs or false humor to pander exclusively to a mainstream pedigree, but neither does it ever become a high class affair.
It’s a very subdued and drowned out day in the countryside of 1932 England, where Dolly Thatcham (Felicity Jones) is about to publicly share her nuptial bliss with hubby to be, Owen (James Norton), and...
